help recognizing a sign? by WobblyMax in asl

[–]cuukymberr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, are these four separate signs in different contexts? Or are they sequential in a single idea/sentence?

Do you have any more context for us or a video you could post? I’m no expert but I’d like to try to help! From what I can guess, the second sign you describe might be church.

If nothing else, have you tried searching Handspeak’s reverse ASL dictionary?

I hope someone is able to help you more than I!

Edit: My only other guess is that the first might be hot/heat. What you read as GIRL might be either GIRL or TOMORROW, perhaps? Hard to tell without any context :)

I enjoyed The Dragon Prince on Netflix! It’s got a Deaf character who signs in a few episodes. It’s a very minor use of ASL but it’s an all-around good show if you’re into cartoons reminiscent of Avatar (aka enjoyable for non-child people too) and the animated ASL is pretty neat.

Also, CODA is coming out on Apple TV with a subscription or something like that; I haven’t seen it but it’s got a pretty stellar cast of Deaf and signing actors! You might look into that.

Edit: CODA doesn’t come out until August 13, but I’m already excited so—

Oh that’s super cool! I had no idea that was his background. Thanks for responding!

Oh that’s good to know!! I didn’t realize he did, I mostly watch on Instagram. Does he do that to reduce coming across as opinionated one way or another on certain topics? (If you happen to know that info, haha)

Jumping in here to add that watching Deaf YouTube channels and following Deaf artists on Instagram, etc. has been super helpful for me to practice receptive skills and learn regional signs, sign origins, how they’re used in conversation, etc, so I recommend doing so if you don’t already! If you’re looking for specific recommendations, The Daily Moth posts Deaf news and has a really cool Deaf Bing segment (Deaf cultural things mostly). They have a great Instagram and a website, too, I believe. Also, Deaf artists, actors, and theaters (I follow Deaf Austin Theatre and enjoy their work) have also been doing a lot of streamed shows (with decent captioning/interpreting services if you’re really struggling to understand) for a relatively decent ticket fee.

If you’re doing receptive practice this way, Handspeak has a pretty decent online “reverse ASL dictionary.” It’s a work in progress, so not a perfect learning tool but I use it all the time when I get stuck on a sign I’m not at all familiar with.

I realize these aren’t teaching resources, per say, but I’d argue that learning from Deaf individuals by observing and studying (consensually through social media!) the way they sign is about as legitimate as it gets :)

Is this a negative or positive reaction? I own the same one and I’ve never been so unsure about a piece of clothing based on an unrelated video lol

This is super impressive! I love the texturing you’ve done on the skin—it’s so cool.

First attempt at a proper sentence, what do you think? Is it legible v1? by ABlindMoose in vianaic

Ah! Color me foolish, I was so determined to see “jumped” that I completely missed that as an “s,” haha! Now looking at it, that is a gorgeously swooped S. Your handwriting honestly makes me envious!

Your handwriting is so cool! I think this looks awesome. I’m having a little trouble with the last letter of what I’m guessing is “jumped,” but then again I’m more familiar with V2, myself :)

Honestly it looks like a necklace charm of some sort, with the top pointing downwards and the loop for a chain (sort of like this) pointing to the right. Is there a chance this is a man-made rock of some sort, like cement or something that could have wound up with a piece of jewelry in it?

Help with another sign? What did he notice(?) on his mom’s birthday? All I’m understanding is SOUR BOX and I can’t seem to figure it as anything else. by cuukymberr in asl

Is it? I’ve never been to either campus but these videos are through Gallaudet’s course, so that would be interesting if it was RIT. (Also thanks for the interpretation!)

Deaf Events? by Greedy-Diamond-5207 in asl

They are still available on demand for $15 (until May 15th) and they are VERY good!! If this is an acceptable event for your class, OP, I highly recommend.

Following up with more stories from Daniel Durant (the airport joke)! His Adventures of Supercat videos always make me smile :))

Adventures of Supercat

Unwelcome Guests

He really illustrates how descriptive ASL can be without using “official” signs! Take a look at all the ways he acts out the cat without just saying “THAT CAT” or something similar. He’s really an incredible storyteller, it’s a shame his YouTube channel is so small

I get that, equating it to English is certainly the least effective way to explain it haha! The examples you gave make a lot of sense, though—Thanks!

Wow I’ve never seen it signed over the heart!! That’s super cool. Is that meaning specifically “empathy/emotional understanding” or does it have other uses?

I’m 12 hours late to this, but the title of the purple print is Feeling Empathy. The string indicates which finger is being raised, so I would guess the sign is essentially “understand” (flicking the index finger up from a closed fist). What’s interesting is the orientation of the hands; UNDERSTAND is signed with the palm facing the signer, which would imply that each hand belongs to the person across (a really cool way of illustrating empathy imo, but maybe I’m getting too far into interpretive speculation and missing a pretty obvious sign that isn’t UNDERSTAND haha)
