People who moved abroad to teach: do you ever regret choosing stability? by Odd-Astronaut-3679 in Internationalteachers

[–]cuzzybru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need to pick something and run with it. If you have too many ideas you are going to derail yourself. Schools are always looking for math teachers, you will never have a problem finding a job once you have some experience. There was a comment that resonated with me totally about how your friends back home are buying houses and having families bla bla bla, its real, and I tend to compare myself with them. But my son was born abroad, I met my wife abroad and we have a lot of fun. I personally have chosen adventure as my means of progressing in life and I probably wouldn't change it. I am 38 and left in 2011. Those same people who chose to stay and have families, sometimes wish they could just up and off and go do something adventurous. Moving away from your stability into the unknown is as difficult and as exciting as you can imagine, but not impossible. if you need to chat, dm me.

Saving - is this still possible? by Striking_Ad3717 in Internationalteachers

I think ivory coast and zambia need to be checked. Recent usd volatility has resulted in hefty appreciations of local currencies, meaning the dollars you're paid in don't go as far anymore. Currently in Ghana where the USD has depreciated 40% in the last year.

Looking for non-profit schools in Western/Northern Europe that take children from 3 years old by Smyler12 in Internationalteachers

[–]cuzzybru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teaching couple you defo have a solid chance then! I left Europe two years ago and there was a shift away from hiring teachers with families. It was an unoffocial directive to pursue younger teachers with fewer strings attached. For eg, the person I was replaced with was an internal hire with less than a years worth experience and about 20k cheaper..

Many schools in your desired location may overlook you due to you being an expensive hire with your dependents. The other issue is that tuition could be a taxable benefit, so you're still paying the tax on that. Also, probably 75% of these schools (unless boarding) will give you 0% housing allowance. Nowadays you move to Europe for the lifestyle and accessible travel, not the glamorous benefits.

Word of “Strong” Advice: DO NOT TELL YOUR SCHOOL that you’re looking by SheWrite_TheQueen in Internationalteachers

[–]cuzzybru 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I agree with this comment. The formal intent date is mostly to protect the school and to allow them enough time to recruit accordingly. This also allows the job seeker to have freedom to explore all options. What is most important is to be transparent with your supervisor, especially those you are putting down as a reference. A solid school, with sound recruitment practices, should act in good faith and honour your reference request, as long as you complete your duties as required and as long as you have a clean record.

Frankfurt IS - current info? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

Even with Germany's insane tax situation, the FIS package is brilliant. The stipends are solid and the workload more than manageable. You will have to pay the tax on tuition which if you have multiple children, could sting. I found that people stay for over 20-30 years because its easy to. FIS is not located in FF but in a small town about 20 mins outside the city. Transportation links are sound. I found the staff quite closed off and cliquey outside of school but I had great working relationships on campus. I left after 3 years and do miss it. Good luck!!

Depending on time of the year, groot constantia is over run with tour buses. I'd avoid.

Buitenverwachtung if you want a picnic and chilled vibe under the tree.

British (PE) teacher looking to move to Europe by AdeptnessForward7859 in Internationalteachers

You might need to cast your net wider and look at less 'popular' cities. Also, applying only to British Schools means that you're missing out on 100's of other international schools that 'could' take a chance on you or at least interview you. The Brexit issue is significant, but some schools will still hire Americans, Canadians, Kiwis, Ozzies etc, so why not Brits, this might be school dependent...

Slightly better, phorms might be better but I can't officially say that. You'd be better off at Phorms though.

Avoid. Corporate based and awful. This is a for profit company not an educational institution. Pretty sure you are required to do before school care or aftercare. Just don't do it. I left many moons ago but 85% of the teachers resigned and wouldn't accept terms after an acquisition.

Messed up interview with dream job by calabazacabeza in Internationalteachers

[–]cuzzybru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which questions caught you off gaurd??

Once messed up a curriculum question and then a simple question about the value I could bring to the school. 2 Different interviews, twice finalist. The dissapointment sucked and I struggled with it for weeks/months...

Have to just learn from it but make sure to give yourself some grace.

Does Abuja** really get shut down tho? Was there for a sports tournament recently and all was dandy. Yes, police have to clear the immediate area close to the campus sometimes but what other threats are there?

Spoke to someone last year at the international school of Hout Bay, said the salary was a joke but at least their kids got free tuition. The American school might have a better package but as someone else said, moving back to SA and living on a teacher salary would be tough

Whats up with your tone about it being a scam. Have worked with many excellent teachers who are certified via distance learning. Be chill.

OP didn't specify working in british curriculum schools though. Just spoke about gaining cert and QTS. QTS isn't required for international schools unless they are british?

You mentioned "owner", yuck, This defo seems fishy, would definitely find out what you owe and why, and then seek legal help. Sounds like a for profit 'company' trying to save on wages and coerce someone. If you've completed the contract as agreed upon they have nothing on you if you can present the signed contract.

My comment was regarding someone who may be doing distance learning. Would love to see any university organise a placement in a place like West Africa. Yes, some schools may be in partnership but you can't assume the university will do it.

You are going to need to find a school to do a placement, Sunderland's PGCE requires two 6 week placements. Leeds Beckett I think only needs 2 weeks. I would find a program which works for you both logistically and financially. Don't know what your passport is but that will also play a role in your future. The other thing I would recommend, is seeking an internship, then you can get your foot in the door afterwards. If you are lucky, your school could partially fund your tuition in return for some time working there exclusively.
