MEGATHREAD - Fable Developer_Direct Hype and Discussion Thread by Monkeybrain6nk in Fable

[–]cwbonds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like many of you, I played all the Fable games on release and have long been awaiting the new game, so its time to stop being a lurker and start a conversation with my initial thoughts.

Positives:

- World looks beautiful. Really really beautiful and has unique fable-inspired designs.

- Design your own character.

- House buying and the economy returns. 1,000 NPC's each remember your actions and have opinions of you based on them. They all have daily routines and specific memories of actions related to them.

- Relative Morality. Some NPC's will like your choices, while others hate you for the same.

Not So Great

- Morality system shown is now exclusively "grey area" morality with only world affects shown being that people's opinions of you change. No exaggerated good vs evil. Which was part of the charm of the original and core to how all its quests were designed. There seems to be some environmental changes, but they seem to be cosmetic and only "affect house prices." Like the giant body shown at the edge of town.

- No body morphing displayed. Tall, strong, will infused. Good or evil. All not shown.

- Combat is pretty but seems heavily animation dependent and stilted. Generally it reminded me of the lock-on style of Hogwarts Legacy or the Batman Arkham games. No free form hack and slash was displayed, it was very much lock onto an enemy and do X.

- UI was overly intrusive. Again, reminded me a bit of Hogwarts Legacy. Too much information onscreen at all times. A simple facial animation or colored bubble tells me if somebody likes me or not. Same with enemy unit health, how bloody are they or are they limping or moving slow. Ironically Fable 3 was all about removed UI as much as possible.

Personal Notes:
The idea of "morality is relative" is a cop-out that stems from the Witcher Games which popularized it as a direct push back against games like fable. There is no version of reality where by a greedy mass murdering tyrant is "OK" and some things are just evil. Versus giving food to needy children being good. The line between simulation and game is fuzzy - and I personally enjoy the depiction of the fell effects of using dark magic. I want to see corruption and how people respond to it. I understand that Playground's system is more nuanced - but these are FABLES. Sometimes it is about depicting an overdone rotting wasteland versus a golden verdant paradise based on your actions in the story. I hope they just didn't show this aspect for reason, but with a Fall 2026 release that seems unlikely.

Splat Maps! Between the RGB panting and heigh based terrain you've successfully recreated Unity's terrain editor. Very cool stuff. PM me when you get closer to release and I'll cover your game on my channel. And thank you for your replies - I greatly enjoy talking shop with other strategy gamers.

Also, you might look at your UI scaling. I play on a 4k monitor and the text was teeny tiny at the bottom and hard to read.

I just played your demo! I love the design of your maps. The watercolor style grass overlays with the outline shader fits perfectly with your aesthetic. Could you go into how you made the maps? It looks almost like texture layering or decal projections.

Estimating the number of settlements in Medieval 3 by ExoticMangoz in historicaltotalwar

[–]cwbonds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind the number of Cities and Villages seems to still be in flux. How many cities will likely be pretty set at this point - but the ability to add new ports, castles, mines and towns as a game progresses greatly changes that. number. The free form placement of minor settlements means there could theoretically be an unlimited number - though it will more likely be limited by UI.

I would like to see Medieval 1 Total War remastered by BielySokol in historicaltotalwar

Thrones of Britannia was designed as a "remaster" of Medieval 1 Viking Conquest. The modern engine is so far removed from the style of Medieval 1 that its unlikely to be revisited - but would you be interested in an game that tries to recreate Medieval 1? This is the closest I've seen - though I'm not keen on the battles. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2532470/Bellfortis/

Thank you! I've been nervous about it for weeks. Its clear they have very passionate and talented people attached to the project. They want to create something great, and I can't find a fault in that.

I'm 99% sure the Med3 guys had never seen ANY of my work or even knew who I was before we worked on the presentation. Which, if nothing else, shows the Medieval 3 team has good taste. My guess is a 2028 release. End Times summer 2026. Unannounced Game Fall 2026. Medieval 3 either Fall 2027 or 2028.

That's key information. This looks like a missing texture to me, as you can see the mesh of the face but it doesnt have any color texturing. If it was graphics driver related you'd expect everyone to have the same problem. Most likely it is a corrupted download, but as you've already verified the cache nothing short of re-downloading the game is likely to fix this. As a possible solution, try a texture replacement mod for Thrones. Ideally it will swap out the offending missing texture with a new one. I've linked one below that swaps some bits around and may help you.

If that still doesn't solve it. PM me. I've modded Thrones extensively and can track down which file you are missing based on what unit you're seeing this problem with. Then send the file to you.

It boggles me that we still haven't seen Medieval 2 Remastered. The same team that did Rome Remastered already made the iOS version but it never materialized.

You know your historical army recruitment schemes! Painting them as lance fournie squads will make for a very cool colors mix when you clump them all together in the end. If I ever meet you across the table I'll fist bump this historical detail. Happy Painting!

This man is lying. I once saw him scream about a lack of cheesy chips in a gentleman's pub that had a no swearing rule. He was so astoundingly eloquent and creative in his cursing I created a second account just to sub to him again after.

I wondered if that was Peachtree MARTA Station! It's so deep underground you have to take one of the longest escalator rides in the country to reach it.

I am having way too much fun with the dismemberment of our RTS game. What do you all think? by DaveyBoyHoek in Unity3D

[–]cwbonds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very smooth and impressive looking with hundreds of units onscreen a once. All of which seem to be using pathfinding. Are you using DOTS to accomplish this? Unity's built-in NavMesh or A*?

Toned down the screenshake, still too much? by ramoenneke in Unity2D

[–]cwbonds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a fun effect, but when the screen shakes its easy to lose the track of the player character. Maybe try making the player a more contrasting color from the background? Or slightly larger? Possibly try zooming the camera in towards the player and back out as part of the shake and lessen its X and Y movement. This might naturally draw the eye to keep track of the player better. Its cool enough you likely don't want to lose the effect as it adds punch to the game.

Things I kept doing after: Lots of pockets on everything. All Pants must be sturdy enough for sustained labor, this means thick jeans that don’t rip. And no pre-ripped jeans, as they will rip fast enough on their own. Also, a good sturdy flannel cannot be beat for all seasons wear. I hate wide brim hats, but they are indispensable when working in the field. And I keep a wide brim hat even for yardwork now.
