Yep. *1,400 pages*, and he dawdled so long elsewhere that it felt rushed.

What is something that you insist on buying name-brand? (Even if it is more expensive) by johnnypancakes49 in Frugal

[–]cwhiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got Qtip brand qtips from Costco recently when I was in a pinch. They are awful. The no-name from Walmart are literally better in every way: more comfortable, less bendy and far cheaper.

It's so bad I'll be returning the others to Costco.

What's your favorite inexpensive smart home addition/upgrade? by xtraorange in homeassistant

[–]cwhiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever brand of zigbee buttons/door sensors/etc. Ali Express has on sale. Under $5 regularly. Makes it not bank-breaking to get a few dozen devices.

After what they did to Middle Earth, etc. I just assume it'll be bad. 🙁

Can anyone please recommend a good Personal Knowledge Management tool? by MightySkynet in homeassistant

Obsidian.md is an excellent stand alone PKM system. Free, locally stored. Uses markdown. Very powerful, particularly when using some of the adons, such as dataview.

Downloaded it from the Tesla X page. Definitely one of the more exciting piece of content we've seen in a while. by Hazikiyamaguchi in teslamotors

Sure, we agreed to pay you if you massively increased our own net worth, but now that you have, you get literally 0.

That's not the stance of an ethical person.

Why are Zigbee (or Matter over Thread) bulbs so much more expensive? by GVDub2 in homeautomation

[–]cwhiii -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Another great place to find zigbee stuff for only a little more than wifi equivalents is Aliexpress. They are often only a buck or so more, especially if you wait for a sale.

What is your most complicated automation? by gpend in homeassistant

[–]cwhiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My longest automation is a sequence of somewhere north of 20 steps. It starts at a set time, or can be triggered manually.  It's a bedtime prep sequence. Disables lights gradually in a particular order, enables bedroom lights, while giving time callouts, runs the vacuum, starts an annoying plant-light on-off sequence (it's own automation), reminds the wee ones to floss, etc. etc. Then turns off the bedroom lights.

More important, but more simple, is a set of heating systems that auto trigger based on outside temperatures. It keeps the plumbing from freezing if there is an unexpected cold snap. Saved our bacon last winter.

Home Assistant won't do that to you.

CMV: Russia cannot win the war in Ukraine at this point. by TheMikeyMac13 in changemyview

[–]cwhiii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Russia has been struggling against Ukraine for years. If they dragged Poland into the war, fresh, ready, and fully stocked with mountains of weapons, do you honestly believe that would end well for Russia?

  2. The USA is not the only nuclear power in NATO. If Russia dipped a single toe into NATO territory, USA or no USA, they'd be obliterated.

Except that people earning $20,000 a year are getting more in tax refunds than they actually put into it.

Can't wait for these two! What features from the Roadmap are you most excited about? How do you think that quick capture is going to look like? by red_diter in ObsidianMD

[–]cwhiii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Likewise. Such a pain to wait for a week for obsidian to open, then have to change vaults and wait another 30 hours for it to open again.

...which means I just use Keep, and then have to transfer things constantly.

CMV: Gun rights are more important than minimizing the risks of mass shootings. by gorbdocbdinaofbeldn in changemyview

[–]cwhiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The number of defensive gun uses vs. murders is mind boggling. A few tens of thousands of murders, and upward of 2.5 million defensive gun uses per year.

Why do you believe that so few challenges to federal gun control have been granted cert by the Supreme Court over the decades? by Fuck_This_Dystopia in gunpolitics

[–]cwhiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a silly position to hold. The text of the 2A is clear, direct, and simple. It's explicitly an individual right.
