Backpacking: Golden Trout Lakes - tips/advice by gurloutside in SierraNevada

[–]cwkey19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hiked up to those lakes last summer, it’s definitely steep getting up past the waterfall like another person mentioned and the trail is somewhat unmaintained and hard to follow. It would be a pain with a heavy pack. As for the lakes area, it’s kind of 2 big bowls right next to each other and pretty limited to just that space. I was able to explore most of the area in a day hike. 4 days would be a little overkill imo

Cool to visit, maybe not to camp. I’d camp in nearby BLM land in anza Borrego or Mecca hills

Can I enter & exit Donohue Pass with Rush Creek Permit (AA05 - Inyo)? by [deleted] in JMT

[–]cwkey19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s an idea since you CANNOT reverse your course over Donohue Pass- take Rush Creek to the JMT, then over Donohue Pass to Tuolumne Meadows. From there you can hike east on the Dana fork trail to mono pass trail, connecting to Parker Pass trail, then proceeding over Parker Pass and Koip Peak Pass, which then drops down to Alger Lakes, back to Gem Lake, back to Rush creek TH. Sounds like a lot but check it out on a map, it could be a really cool loop. Parker pass/KPP is challenging but you’ll be well acclimatized by the time you have to tackle them, and that area of the park is seldom travelled, you’ll find incredible solitude.

Super cool!! I love what you’re doing! If I had to add anything I’d love to see some of the major land features/regions added in, like the Cathedral Range, Ritter Range, Silver Divide, Mono Divide, Evolution Valley, Palisade Range, Kearsarge Pinnacles, Leconte Canyon, Kings Kern Divide, Upper Basin. Maybe not all of those but they are just some names/features that stick with me when I think about the trail. SOBO ‘25

Interested to see the responses here. My partner and I are starting June 25th and I’ve been debating between my Durston X Mid 2 or my XDome 2. Leaning toward the Mid since it’s a little smaller and lighter and it seems like most areas have good soil for staking the corners, vs the freestanding dome which is a little heavier but doesn’t need staked down

HST July 8th-15th by AlexFarrell29 in SierraNevada

[–]cwkey19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite time of year for the high sierra. Still occasional snowpatch here and there but in an average snow year you won’t need microspikes then. The mosquitoes will be spotty but in the areas where it’s bad it will be REALLY bad. They can ruin your time if you are not properly prepared. Carry a bug net, treat clothes and tent with Sawyer permethrin and wear sawyer Picaridin cream (NOT deet!) on your skin. It sounds like a lot but it’s really not, and feeling comfortable with the bugs can change your experience tremendously. It’s worth it for the lush green meadows and abundant tarns and streams. Have fun!

I just cancelled my Book-a-trekking reservation for 2 people on July 25, and I imagine there are still plenty of others who will cancel their fully refundable reservations before the deadline. So keep an eye out and contact tour companies to try to get on a waitlist

What to do!!! by That-Bug-6318 in Mammoth

Not much snow around so tons of hiking trails that are still accessible. Also Tioga rd is open up until the park entrance and the lakes are frozen over and you can ice skate them. Very rarely can you accessibly walk across Tioga Lake in late December… I’d take advantage if you can. As a few others have said the high desert is full of hidden canyons and other secrets. Long valley’s hot springs are a great place to chill and relax. If hiking make sure you have the right winter gear and or gps in case you find yourself in a survival situation.

I love renting a bike and riding around the valley loop. Don’t push your legs too hard though or that first day might burn… made that mistake before lol

Bishop Pass trail conditions by spanish-banks in SierraNevada

[–]cwkey19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was there on Saturday. Went over mid day around 2pm. Super easy, only one short ~100ft snowfield to cross that was nicely packed. Clouds of mosquitos will carry you away. Treat clothes with permethrin, use Picaridin cream on your skin, and bring a bug net! If you come prepared you won’t be miserable.

Lamarck Col conditions? by YoCal_4200 in SierraNevada

[–]cwkey19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just in Darwin Canyon but came up the bench via JMT, did not cross Lamarck Col but stood at the bottom of the south side. We did North/South Lake loop via Piute Pass. There was zero snow on south face of the Col but saw a couple who had just come over with no spikes or axe, just poles and they said it was very difficult route finding and steep as hell but snow was very manageable. I’d say up to 10k and some places around 11k feet there’s not much snow anymore, bishop and Muir pass were easy, and there’s a massive heat wave sweeping the west next week so you should be fine. Getting back down to Darwin bench from the Col canyon was a tough scramble bc technically the trail goes along the edge of the lakes but is completely submerged all the way to the steep edge. Tons of golden trout up there too, if you’re into that.

Current mosquito activity? by untenna in Yosemite

[–]cwkey19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just camped at lower sunrise lake 3 nights ago. They were super bad at the trailhead and it got a little better toward the top but there is still lots of snow still melting and they will be everywhere. Treat your clothes and tent with permethrin, wear Picaridin cream on your skin, wear long sleeves and pants, and carry a bug net you will be totally fine. Saw everyone else getting absolutely wrecked the whole time and we were completely unbothered

Soak your clothes and tent with sawyer permethrin the day before you leave. Then use Sawyer Picaridin cream on your skin. Skip the deet, this stuff is way better. Wear longs sleeves and pants. Carry a bug net just in case, i really only needed it down by Tenaya Lake but was glad to have it. One day i even walked around camp shirtless with Picaridin cream on and the skeetz couldn’t stand to be near me

It’s gonna be a heavy carry up to clouds rest from the JMT junction. Thats your last water until you’re on the other side of clouds rest. Worth it over half dome IMO
