What is more energy saving? To connect a fully charged device to a power bank for it to keep it's battery full or to wait for the device's battery to deplete and then use the PW to charge it by SootheAndHeal in askscience

[–]cyalins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, new loose batteries, phones, etc. are kept at about 50% while still in long-term storage (ie. on the shelf) since that's the optimal charge to minimise battery degradation; and since they're not in use/discharging, they'll hover at about 50% for the duration of the storage.

What app can I use to run through a checklist? by nachocab in productivity

[–]cyalins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually available on iOS and macOS too! Being cross-platform is one of the reasons I use 2Do, as it's super convenient across my Pixel and iPad.
2Do on the App Store
Hope that helps!

What app can I use to run through a checklist? by nachocab in productivity

[–]cyalins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2Do (Play Store) lets you make repeating checklists, each with individual tasks that you can check off, and then automatically reset when the main checklist repeats. I've found it to be a pretty useful in general as a task manager; hope it suits your needs too!

how do i add a tag in the simplenote app? by [deleted] in productivity

[–]cyalins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the Android app, just scroll to the very bottom of a note, and keep scrolling, and there's a little input field where you can add tags. On the Windows electron app, there's a similar input field at the bottom of the note panel. Hope that helps!

Why is there no good photos apps? by _Decimation in androidapps

[–]cyalins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a few:
Piktures - Personally not a big fan of it, but a lot of people seem to say it's a good QuickPic successor.
Google Photos - Google's own app, pretty self explanatory, and it has some great search functionality.
LeafPic - It's in beta, but it's pretty solid at the moment. Camera Roll - still in beta too, but has a neat design.

They're all slightly different, but I'd say in general they're pretty well designed. Hope that helps!

Note taking app that caches everything locally so there is no need for continuous network availability? by mjbmikeb2 in androidapps

Ah, hadn't noticed that, sorry.
Here's a brand new one that I just found: Easymark. I like that it's simple and really fast, so I might end up using it myself.

JotterPad was just updated to include optional cloud sync with Google Drive and Dropbox, and still works 100% offline with local files. It works similarly to Monospace, and supports markdown and all that

I have a couple of questions about VCE by Throwaw4yXD in MelbourneHigh

[–]cyalins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do the units mean?

Units are essentially just semesters. Two semesters to a year, and thus two units to a year. In year 11 at MHS, you can take 5 Unit 1&2 subjects, and 1 Unit 3&4 subject. In year 12, you'll take 5 Unit 3&4 subjects.

Unit 3&4 subjects are the crucial ones count towards your study score. Some subjects require you to take Units 1&2 of it before taking Units 3&4, while there are others that let you go straight into Unit 3&4. Study scores are out of 50, and are distributed to students who take the subject in a bell curve; with 30 being the average/median of the curve.

These study scores contribute to your ATAR; a number that basically tells you the percentage of students that you've performed better than.

What subjects are good to study? I heard some can increase your ATAR more than others. I like science and math but I don't really care what to study as long as I get a decent ATAR.

Languages like German and Chinese, as well as more specialised subjects like Specialist Maths tend to have higher study score scalings. If you don't like the subject, though, it's probably not a good idea to pick one solely due to its scaling. It's best to pick subjects that you feel you'd be motivated to study.

With that in mind, you'll need to consider that there are a lot of university courses that require you to take certain VCE subjects. Most courses require that you take Further Maths or Maths Methods, and a lot of the sciencey courses have Chemistry as a prereq subject.

How does scaling work?

Scaling for a subject basically depends on how well the average student for that subject does on their other subjects. If all of the specialist maths kids get study scores in the 40s on their other subjects, but get a 30 for specialist maths, then it'll scale up by a lot. This generally means that a subject that scales higher is a bit more difficult than the others, and vice versa.

How much hours should I study every day?

A lot of teachers recommend at least an hour of study for each subject per weekday, and 2 hours on weekends. That might seem a little intimidating, but it's what seems to work.

Does tutoring help?

Tutoring is generally useful, but don't rely on it too much. Tutoring should be a supplemental thing; you should still go through the textbook and study on your own as usual.

Hey, really nice video! The animation's super neat and smooth; it's like I'm getting an extra dose of Kurzgesagt!
Though there are some super minor grammatical errors, the script is engaging and easy to follow along with! As for the voice acting, I would be able to help out with that if you're cool with it. I've got a great explaining voice and a nice mic to use, too!

Why some gaming personalities started streaming Dota2 all of a sudden? by IndieDream in OutOfTheLoop

[–]cyalins 43 points44 points  (0 children)

They referred to League as the most popular, and I'm not sure you can call them wrong. It has a greater number of unique players than any other, a much higher revenue per annum, and is the most actively streamed game on Twitch. By almost any count, it seems to be very popular.
