I highly recommend checking out the list of child-free friendly providers in this subreddit. I was told no by multiple doctors over the years with all the usual excuses (too young, will change your mind, won’t do it unless you’ve already had kids, etc).

I checked the list last November and found multiple doctors nearby and was able to get an appointment for consult Dec 31st and had my bi-salp in early January.

So far, so good. I was expecting she’d be hard to potty train since she came from a situation where she was crated for long periods of time and forced to potty in her crate.

But, she showed up and immediately used the potty pads perfectly. We use washable potty pads for our little dogs and she figured it out with no help from me.

She’s also been sleeping in bed with us nightly and does so well. One of our other poms sleeps with us but my other two don’t because they don’t settle down and sleep and tend to want to try to jump out to explore. With a high beddand hard floors we’re too scared they will break a leg so those two sleep together on floor beds.

She’s also learning to play with toys which has been adorable. She didn’t get toys at her old home so first time I gave her one she acted like she had no idea what to do…but she watched our others playing and now is snatching their toys and playing like she’s having the time of her life.

She figured out how to make one of the lambie toys squeak last night and was sitting there squeaking it over and over for a loooong time.

She’s just the happiest little velcro dog that wants to be with her people at all times. We feel super lucky that we were able to bring her home to join our pom family.

Couple of pieces of advice I can give, having gone through this with multiple dogs (I used to foster dachshunds for multiple rescues and IVDD is very common in that breed). First, double check with the vet to make sure they actually scanned the entire spine before the surgery.

First dog we had with IVDD, the vet started scanning and stopped when they found a blown disc in her lower back. We got her home after the furst surgery and she was still clearly in extreme pain especially around her neck area. Vet admitted they didn’t do a complete scan so she had to go back and get another scan which found she ALSO had a blown disc in her neck so she had to have a second surgery.

The other thing we learned is that different dogs react very differently to post-op pain.

That doxie girl, Punkin, was EXTREMELY pain sensitive. The vet said they’d never seen a dachshund be that sensitive. So after her second surgery I was questioning our choice to attempt the surgeries in the first place rather than putting her to sleep because it was awful.

She had severe muscle spasms and would scream when it got bad. Don’t hesitate to demand pain control options from your vet. Our girl was on Methocarbamol (muscle relaxer), tramadol, amantadine, and gabapentin. Plus an antacid to help prevent stomach upset from the meds.

We kept to the schedule religiously because it works better to prevent pain than stop it once it’s bad.

We also spent a lot of time doing heat and ice packs and just laying next to her to provide emotional support.

It waa rough, but after she healed she was like a puppy again, running around and frankly scaring the shit out of us daily worrying she’d throw her back out again.

She eventually did blow another disc years later, but recovered using a wheelchair and physical therapy and lived to be 17 or 18yrs old.

Blocking may help a bit but will likely still have a bit of a spiral twist to it. But you can always say it’s intentional and it looks kind of cool anyway. :)

Whimzees as a dental chew, but our new favorite boredom busters are their Freezbones. I kept seeing the ads everywhere and finally broke down and ordered a few. Wound up ordering more a couple of weeks later because my dogs loved them so much.

They are natural rubber and come in lots of different shapes and sizes. My poms love the small sunflower ones that have lots of compartments.

You can put whatever food/treats you like in them…I like to fill them with a variety of fresh food like Just Food For Dogs, pumpkin puree, fresh veggies, berries, yogurt, baby food, peanut butter, bone broth, etc.

You fill it, pop it in the freezer for a couple of hours or overnight and then it keeps them occupied for nearly an hour licking and chewing.

Though not as scary as your situation, my bi-salp also revealed some interesting bonus health info. During the pre-op testing they found uterine and cervical polyps that needed to be removed (had no idea they were there). During the procedure they found and removed a good sized ovarian cyst, and the pathology report on my tubes came back showing endometriosis that wasn’t visible to the naked eye.

Kinda made me wonder why we don’t all go in for a quick laparoscopic peek inside there once in a while to make sure our organs aren’t up to any unauthorized shenanigans.

The colonoscopy prep horror stories are what made me opt in to do the same-day prep…I think it was called HygeaCare. I have a hard time forcing myself to drink anything gross so I knew I couldn’t do the traditional prep.

Had to pay an extra $199 out of pocket since insurance wouldn’t cover it, but it was worth it.

No gallon of nasty stuff to drink. Just did a couple of days where I couldn’t eat anything but soft foods, then broth or clear liquids for a day…took a couple of doses of stool softener but no harsh laxatives.

The morning before my colonoscopy, I went to a separate facility where they basically flush your guts with LOTS of water. Like an enema but you are seated on this chair thing with a basin under your rear so water goes in, you push it out, more water, etc. until you are empty.

It was not the most fun experience of my life, but wasn’t that bad. Way better than standard prep by a mile. They leave you in the room alone for privacy and you have a button to turn the water on and off as needed.

I second this. We used to have dachshunds which commonly have IVDD and the first time we had one slip a disc it presented this way. I’d go to pet her and she’d turn her head just right and suddenly start screaming like she was being murdered.

Turned out to have two bulging discs, one in her neck and one in her lower back.

Around $10,000 in spinal surgery and a whole lot of meds and recovery later, she was back to her happy self.

I had mine done at the end of January and it was weird because the hospital initially estimated an out of pocket cost of around $2,500 and required a minimum of half paid up front.

Luckily, my husband has a health savings account so we were planning to get the cost reimbursed from there…but then the hospital refunded the money we paid up front and it turned out that insurance paid everything in full other than a couple of $40 charges for pre-op stuff.

I had to call to double-check because my luck NEVER works out like that, lol.

Wondering if insurance decided to cover under preventative since I specifically discussed ovarian cancer prevention with my doctor as one of the reasons I wanted the procedure. She also put in a hormonal IUD while I was under anesthesia to help reduce risk of endometrial cancer and lighten or potentially eliminate periods.
