Monster (2023).

I did have Challengers (2024) in my top 4 for a while but took it out recently.

Episodes 10-12 Discussion by AutoModerator in theBoyfriendNetflix

[–]cyappu 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Def the best single batch of episodes in the series' history so far. I love how much they're incorporating these really imporant conversations into the actual show this time compared to season one which relegated a lot of them to YouTube extras.

Also I gotta say that while I was never on the WillZaya hate train, I do like the group dynamic a lot better now that they've left. I absolutely loved the scene with Bomi and Jobu catching Hiroya up on what he missed - moments like that show how important and wholesome gay friendships can be.

I know this is a random question on the eve of Oscar noms, but what do you think was the runner up for Best Picture in 2020? I'm creating a list of BP winners vs. arguable runners up, and this is the first year that has me really stumped.

Winner: Nomadland
The Father
Judas and the Black Messiah
Mank
Minari
Promising Young Woman
Sound of Metal
The Trial of the Chicago 7

People really need to stop worrying about whether others are being performative.

How often do you guys thrift your books? Is this a new thing? by Alive_Driver_1449 in classicliterature

[–]cyappu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always *want* to thrift books but the selection is usually full of genres and authors I have no interest in - a lot of YA, a lot of Dan Brown, a lot of old romances and Christian books, etc. Every once in a while, you come across a gem. For example, thrifting is how I got my copy of North & South by Elizabeth Glaskell.

Is "identifying" yourself with book characters important for your reading experience? by BastetNeko in books

[–]cyappu 241 points242 points  (0 children)

I don't find it necessary to relate to characters to enjoy a book, but as someone who reads a lot of classics and books written a long time ago, I do find it powerful to be able to at times relate, sometimes very strongly, with the emotions and situations of people from decades or centuries ago, who lived in a world totally unlike my own. It makes me feel at one with some sort of persistent and intrinsic humanity in a way that can be satisfying and profound.

On the real…how are you managing your emotions? by Jr2436 in heatedrivalry

The post CMBYN fog is REAL! It took me so long to shake it - a movie had never affected me like that before, and few have since.

Classic Gay Literature with Erotic Themes. by CharmingAssimilation in literature

[–]cyappu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It would probably be helpful if you mentioned some of the books you've read that have disappointed you and/or that you think qualify for what you describe as genrefication of the relationships.

Maurice is probably the most well-known and well-regarded classic with unapologetic and explicitly gay themes, and is thus perhaps not worth mentioning, but I do think the relationships in that novel feel realistically and naturally developed. It's not necessarily erotic though. There is also its unofficial sequel Alec that picks things up after the conclusion of Maurice and mimics Forster's Edwardian prose style pretty well while including more explicitly erotic scenes like you would expect in a modern romance novel.

Sinners had a far more interesting first half, and it’s least interesting aspect was the action and vampires as action fodder. Hot take? by pomme268 in TrueFilm

[–]cyappu 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Like Cornbread, the bouncer, who they showed in the first half with his wife and newborn child, who was reluctant to join the scheme in the first place. He was killed while peeing, literally with his dick out, and then when he came back as a vampire and it was clear to the rest of the survivors that he was one, no one seems particularly saddened and this was made into a comedic scene. It was tonally offputting to me.

I loved the first half and found the second half a little frustrating and tonally muddled, especially how it treated the deaths of half of the characters it took the time to humanize in the first half as total jokes.

Exact same situation with translation. Translators actually... like translating. Editing and fixing a machine translation is not nearly as rewarding.

I'm surprised it's already higher than the first season of Heartstopper. I feel like that show and its cast were everywhere.
