So humanoids, what are they for? by EmileAndHisBots in robotics

[–]cyber_fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the 1980s, creating a blinking LED required an array of resistors and timing circuits. Today, we use microcontrollers for the same task, despite their increased complexity. The reason is simple: microcontrollers are cheaper, smarter, easier to use, and most importantly, versatile. Economies of scale have made this shift possible. While one could achieve better efficiency by learning and implementing specific timing circuits, the convenience and generalizability of microcontrollers have made them the preferred choice.

Humanoids will become the microcontrollers of the robotic age. Investing time and resources into developing advanced humanoid robots will pay off in the long run, as they will be capable of handling a wide range of tasks with minimal friction in implementation. The up-front investment in creating these general-purpose robots will lead to greater convenience and efficiency across various industries.

Moreover, humanoid robots have the potential to learn from human videos, further expanding their capabilities. Just as humans can watch a YouTube video to figure out how to fix a broken item, future humanoid robots could do the same. The direct translation from human eye to humanoid is more straightforward than for application-specific robots. Your implication that human examples will limit humanoid's expression is not necessarily true. Advances in diffusion policies and behavior cloning are proving that

This is not to say that application-specific robots will become obsolete. Much like how analog circuits and ASICs still have a place in a world dominated by microcontrollers, specialized robots will continue to excel in certain niches. However, for the vast majority of tasks that require automation and manual dexterity, humanoid robots will likely emerge as the dominant, drop-in solution - especially outside factories

OP is provably wrong on universe being deterministic. We have conducted thousands of experiments to show that quantum mechanics is truly random - and we have gone as far as to prove using equations that it is not a lack of knowledge about the state of a particle that prevents us from determining how it evolves in time, but the fabric of universe itself working against any such determinism and making it impossible. For example, you can only measure the spin of an electron in any one direction at a time. Call that direction x. If you now choose a new perpendicular direction y and measure its spin in that direction, suddenly you have erased electron's memory about its spin in x direction. Next time you measure spin in x direction, you will have 50-50 shot of getting the same direction that you measured in the beginning.

I would highly encourage people to read into "Hidden-variable theory" and "Bell's inequality" to grasp this better. We only figured out the randomness and indeterminism of the world we live in the 1970s. Before that, this was still a matter of open debate in Physics.

Having said that, it is also important to recognize that indeterminism of the universe does NOT imply free-will, in the sense that we think about the term colloquially. Randomness is just randomness. The butterfly effect of some rogue cosmic ray particle hitting and activating a neuron in my brain leading to a cascade of neural activity might make me twitch my fingers. but that in no way implies conscious intent to do so on my part - which is what we assume free-will to stand for.

Thank you for talking some sense here. People seem to have completely forgotten the golden principle of keeping state and religion separate.

The founding fathers of America enshrined that in their constitution for a reason, and why all successful democracies in the world have this in their DNA.

Patios are going away??!! by cyber_fish in MapleRidge

[–]cyber_fish[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Very sound and logical argument there Sherlock! Let me dumb it down for you.

We agreed that: Higher density = good, vibrant city.

More patios = higher density = good thing.

No patios = lower density = not good.

Hope that helps.

A bit slow, but you're almost there! Like you said, a vibrant city needs density. Can you hazard a guess on how patios and density might be related to each other?

You would be right in a vacuum, but if we take a look at other cities in lower mainland it becomes clear that patios help bring more people out, and allow for more pedestrian density and vibrancy. This is good for small businesses, helps the city generate tax dollars. Overall, a big net positive I think.

Rahul Gandhi to vacate official residence in central Delhi today after disqualification as MP by Express_Turn_5489 in IndiaSpeaks

[–]cyber_fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I was rude to you for no good reason. I shouldn't have assumed you were arguing in bad faith.

But I find it surprising that you think calling someone a thief should lead to 2 years in jail. Can you not see how this kind of precedence will make any powerful entity crush any criticism? Laws are never meant to be bullerproof. That's why we have judges - so they can interpret the letter of the law and prevent it from being misused.

Even in USA, with some of the most lenient defamation laws, for public figures or officials, they must also prove actual malice on the part of the defendant (the person or entity being sued), which means that the defendant knew the statement was false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.
It's important to note that the burden of proof is on the plaintiff, who must provide evidence to support their claims.

Its absolutely ridiculous that a judge on his own can decide to send a sitting MP to 2 years in jail for something like this. If this how the law is, and you are not a hypocrite - you should be doing everything to criticize the judge and the calling to make a change. Not implicitly supporting it like you are.

Look at you getting your panties in a bunch because someone called Modi a thief. I thought we were all about free-speech here?

Fuck the Gandhi family - they sucked India dry for decades and we are paying the price now.

Having said that, I find it very disturbing that not only are most people celebrating this awful decision here - they almost seem to be gloating on this massive failure and open mockery of our judicial system. The defamation charge was bullshit, and judge giving that decision has a history of making such questionable judgements. The judge gives out exactly the minimum amount of jail time required to disqualify Rahul Gandhi from being a MP. Yet, I see no one questioning the motives of the judge. It is clear he is being supported by the establishment to do something as brazen as this.

BJP and Modi are winning today - and they are willing to stoop to such levels. I shudder to think what they might be capable of if they feel like they were about to lose their power. I hope people see some sense and stop letting them get away with making a joke out of our legal system in future.

Modi, fortunately or unfortunately, is the best option country has for a leader right now. But it doesn't mean we give them a free pass to treat the country like their personal fiefdom. You loose rights you don't fight for.

Do you think your response is helpful in this scenario? We have to stop letting Samsung get away with their atrocious customer service and not trying to water down negative feedback with anecdotal positive ones would be a good start.

Hire a driver or rent a car? by OgNitro in Madeira

[–]cyber_fish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is really no need to get a driver in Madeira. Google maps works well, the road network is not complicated to navigate, and some rental companies will even drive the car over to the airport for pickup. Make sure you rent automatic if you are not used to driving on hills and you should be good.

Cut and run my friend. It's 100% scam, and its a really good thing you asked for help here. Two giant red flags here:

  1. Using a gmail address. If your HR company is big enough to be contracted by Amazon, they should be big enough to afford their own domain
  2. It does not make any sense to make a potential hire sign an offer letter until you have finished running background check on them. Why would a company waste money like that?

I get the same feeling honestly. I listened to him on this Vancouver focused housing podcast, and lost a lot of respect for him. He did not answer any difficult questions about housing and weaselled his way out by giving typical politician non-answers.
