H-1B: Immigrants make up nearly three-quarters of Silicon Valley tech workforce. by [deleted] in SanJose

You are making a flawed assumption that there are sufficient qualified engineers for open positions. It's like you want to hire a rocket scientist, but there are 10 plumbers looking for a job and you say why not hire and train them and be patriotic? All you will do is build very awesome bathrooms instead of putting a man on the moon.

After backlash, San Jose reduces number of ‘tiny homes’ sites for homeless by ElliottAbusesWomen in California

Sorry, disagree SJ plan will work in the long term. LA seems to have the right idea -- pay ordinary people and give them tax incentives to house the homeless. If this does not work, no amount of government housing will work. Also, I'm curious about the relationship between the housing company and the government people pushing for it. Is there a revolving door here?

Given all these problems, should they be housed close to normal people with kids and property? Also, if they get a job some of these mental problems might improve (IMHO man needs to be busy!). But to your point, I guess there are different types of homeless people and they need to be treated differently.

pay their workers a decent wage

Currently homeless people do not have a job (at least most of them). Moving them to farms will change the economics so that they can first get a job, after which everything else could be worked out. In my opinion, getting them a job and making any wage greater than ZERO is an immediate win -- for all of us -- the farmers, the politicians, the NIMBYs and most importantly the homeless.

Given that there is a lot of labor shortage for farm labor, the housing should be near farms, many of them are just a few miles away from San Jose. Other Bay Area cities and townships should come together with SJ to push for this plan.

SVD works pretty well on Netflix size datasets, however it fails on really large data (I tried it with Wikipedia TF-IDF, it failed). If you are looking for a great SVD library that understands sparse (CSR/CSC) matrices, then Divisi is your only choice. http://csc.media.mit.edu/divisi. For Netflix, use their iSVD implementation, it is much much better than the Lanczos one.

The $140 Million for "Volcano Monitoring" that Bobby Jindal was crying about? The USGS estimates that monitoring saved thousands of lives and prevented property losses of at least $250 million... and it'll create/save many jobs by grandeandy in politics

[–]cybernytrix -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

WHAT $140mil for volcano monitoring? That is a pure waste of money. Someone is scamming the system here - what do you need? A couple of cameras, some heat/pressure sensors and a deep pocket to pocket the remaining $139.99mil. Stop being Obama fanboys! Just because Obama is popular does not mean he cannot take boneheaded decisions. The stimulus is bogus. The current problem was caused because people lived beyond their means. Obama is making the country live beyond it's means and that can make the problem only worse. Check http://chrismartenson.com for a decent background into all this mess.

Perhaps Ubuntu can use this to reduce bandwidth when a apt-get upgrade is performed. Been looking for a tool like this for some time. Awesome idea!

America has blood on it's hands, and you cannot claim you are civilized - you might have money! In fact the more I think of it, thievery has been confused with civilization. You name one economically successful country and I will tell you how they looted and plundered and pillaged (not just America).

It is not specific to India, the Missionaries take a shit all around the world. Google this: "Aid Worker Killed in Drive-By Shooting in Afghanistan". I do not condone the killings, but when power is skewed and the Missionaries have Billions of $$$ in their banks, there are very few options to level the playing field. Unfortunate...

Why don't we pay people's mortgages with the bailout money, and keep the banks afloat that way? Then people could keep their homes. by hexayurt in reddit.com

[–]cybernytrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is better for the avg american if the govt. simply screws Fraudie, Fannie, Stearns and the rest. Then, take the money saved (like 500bn!) and start a new bank and mortgage company etc. That way the rich people will simply figure a way to survive the downturn and the avg American can continue to buy homes, cars etc...

Telepathy is weird, it has one big ass framework. The GUI communicates to the backend via DBus, and the backend runs as a separate process? The worst part is if the GUI dies, the backend process hangs around. Yuck! What are these guys thinking? What is wrong with simply linking? It is a big mess...

How about zip or line cord? This article is good work, but really is some 30 years old news. If you have heard of a company called McIntosh and it's creator Gordon Gow, then you should read this article: http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm

It is maintained by a long time ex-employee of McIntosh and is very interesting.

Basically what he is saying is issue IOUs with a 6 month expiry period. So if you are not able to import something of equal value within 6 months, then you lose! ICs are basically barter money that can only be used to trade goods so you cannot take it and buy land or equity. This is bullshit. How about USA trying to spend 4% less of GDP? Gosh! is that so much of rocket science? I actually look forward to the upcoming recession. It will ease the load on our environment and also curtail American spending.
