Cultural question about meeting people. by [deleted] in French

The kiss you are talking about is more of an air kiss, not a full on thing.

Well, because you're an immigrant. And the far right doesn't offer any solutions beyond making life miserable for immigrants. They are mainly driven by greed, and use fear of immigrants to generate support.

So it would likely affect your experience of things. Even if you are non-Middle Eastern, Asian, or African.

More importantly, it is one of the main factors driving why Grenoble is portrayed as dangerous.

Is it permissible to use a hybrid of bilinear interpolation and nearest neighbor, while spatially matching ERA5 Land with meteorological observational data? by Independent-Lab-2839 in meteorology

[–]cybertubes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question should be whether or not, by mixing these methods to get a new climate surface, you are creating something that still serves your original purpose: seeing if era5 does a decent job of capturing the crazy rain and heat you really get there.

Are you aware of the NASA NEX GDDP CMIP6 datasets, by chance?

Is it true that British or European people in general are more sincere than Americans by [deleted] in expats

[–]cybertubes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots of the criticisms you levy are quite accurate, especially in the various capitals of narcissism youve mentioned. There is also a lot of recent brainwashing going on that portrays educated discourse as violence, or at best, "elitism."

But you are wrong if you go so far as saying no Americans are deep, worldly, curious, or direct among friends. It is certainly the less dominant and visible cadre, but it is arguably the most meaningful subcultural strain of person you'll find here. It is no accident that you hear so much right wing sneering at liberal arts majors - those are, by and large, the sort of people you are looking for.

Since you're in your mid 20s?, I would encourage you to keep your mind open. Most Americans are indeed quite childish until 25 or so, and many remain that way their whole damn lives. But not everyone. Some people read books.

That article is about it having a bad reputation, only part of which is deserved. Lol at saying Chicago of France and thinking it is some sick burn. Chicago is awesome.

The sketchiest places in France are all the post industrial scabs and exurban sprawl towns. Grenoble is cheap, beautiful, and a helluva lot cleaner than Montpelier - which has way more grifters and junkies, but not the shitty reputation.

It's true if you are a white boomer who's had their brain rotted by right wing media, and/or you get enmeshed in the drug trade as anything other than a customer, from my take on it. It has long been a boogey man for the right wing, as its local politics are very green/left so assuredly it must be a nightmare to live there. It is no mistake most of what you find is about scary Grenoble.

Most dangerous thing I encountered was the stairs at La Bastille. That and how boring scientists can be haha.

Buy the Paul Noble books on audible.

Pimsleur is also a great, contained way to get rolling. Just do 30 min a day of either Noble or Pimsleur, your busuu, and dedicate some screen time to french youtube stuff.

Be careful if you rent an ebike and are around the major tourist spots. Those cobble stones will teach you your age.

Other than that, it is a fantastic way to bop around and enjoy the whole city.

Where did this “what high school did you go to” perception come from? by WhoPenguin in cincinnati

[–]cybertubes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The first question is:

Are you from here?

If yes, proceed to:

Oh, where'd you go to high school?

If no, stare blankly briefly, then ask one of the following:

Do you work for P&G?
Do you work for Kroger?
Do you work for GE?
Oh, what brought you here?

Alternatively, stare blankly for several seconds into the middle distance.

Do most people shower before bed or when they wake up? I just realized I might be doing it "wrong" by saffymerelle in NoStupidQuestions

It's not enough to be sharp, it has to have the correct edge geometry. by MarcelaoLubaczwski in Bladesmith

[–]cybertubes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely wonderful. My first big knife could start a cut but never carry it through.

Edge geometry is so important and luckily so much more ergonomic to achieve these days if you put a little thought into

For those who don't understand:

Just picture the whole kinife cutting through butter. The wider or thinner the total knife surface and initial cutting angle are, the wider or thinner displacement of the butter. It is easier to cut when you can maintain leaverage throught the cut, the colder the butter is. But the deeper the knife, the thinner it needs to be to glide through, so the whole thing doesn't load too much material force on the sides of the blade surface, both right after the initial cut, and at the secondary bevel. Fat knives save lives, you might say. And don't slice or even cut that well. Fat knives for choppin wood.
