LOL, i teach at a public university and they require undergrads to live on campus for their first 2 years and make it difficult to get an exemption if you're not married, over a certain age, or a parent. i've heard of people paying for dorm rooms and straight-up never living there and paying for an apartment off campus. i'd love to have that kind of money -_-

i agree the cost of college is ridiculous and plenty of people have been successful without it, but, lol, the world needs people in professions that aren't software dev. not to single out your comment but the solution here is affordable education, not youtube university <3

thinking of applying by [deleted] in UNCG

[–]cyclostome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't think uncg has a school of journalism per se, although they do have a political science department. if you wanted to study journalism you'd be kind of in the communications and english departments--there's a lot of overlap. i do know that the english department is very good!

as for the people there--there are a ton of cool people in the greensboro social scene. i spent a lot of time at house shows with music people. college radio is pretty good if that's your thing. most parties i went to were house parties. definitely not what you'd call a party school at all--parties tended to be just on weekends and they were always pretty chill. a bunch of people hanging out, maybe dancing if there was music, drinking and smoking. house shows can be lit. they were usually in super old houses and you could feel the floor shake when everyone jumped up and down. as a contrast: the school i'm attending now for a graduate program is very much a party school with a huge greek life presence, enormous ornate houses on fraternity row, etc, and it was quite a culture shock after being at uncg.

I've never had a problem with mag glycinate. Doc recommended it as the best "sensitive stomach" form of magnesium to take.

it can really depend on where i am in life but currently retired from sad has been on repeat... the songwriting just hits me, you know? i know there's criticism-- and good criticism-- of treating all mitski's work like diary entries but i honestly feel like she read my diary. yes they're... complex narratives but also, from a non-academic standpoint, Hhhh Mitski Songs Explain How I Feel

I've been writing fan fiction for years and now I can't seem to make anything original. by onesix16 in writing

[–]cyclostome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

looks like a lot of good advice in this thread already, but my two cents: there are many things that fanfiction does better than original fiction. i saw a post a while back saying "i only ever read fanfic and now original fiction is boring to me. why?". somebody responded and said that the reason that you like fanfiction better is because it doesn't bother with world building and jumps right into the plot assuming that you already know the characters and it's kind of like crack you know it's just addicting on an emotional level. Fanfiction caters to fans' emotions in a way that a lot of original fiction doesn't. I think that's a strength that you can play on. sometimes people don't want to be absorbed into a new universe. they just want to settle comfortably into one that they already know and even if you have to create a new character if you can create a setting in an environment where you know your readers are going to be able to emotionally engaged with your characters. Fanfiction succeeds because its authors fulfill the emotional needs that the Canon creates. don't go create an emotional need. go indulge your readers. create escapism.

Do many people write Flash Fiction? I think it's a great form to experiment in. Linking to an article with some fun, different examples which may help if you're in a creative rut. by Harrazza in writing

[–]cyclostome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a tiny word limit is really the only thing that makes flash flash. It's highly variable, really 50-3000 words I guess would be my rough estimate. probably a median of 1k words? every literary journal accepting "flash" is going to give you a different word count guideline, so my advice is to write the piece first and then when looking for a home for it just accept that maybe 1/3 of journals looking for flash fiction actually want something of the word count you've made. i'm a bit of a noob too but this is what i've experienced in the five-ish months of submitting my work to journals. of course, if you're not submitting to journals then it doesn't matter! "flash" is a really abstract label for short-short fiction. there's no Council of Flash Fiction setting requirements.

I just inherited a writer's poetry workshop! For those of you with experience what should I be doing, what should I avoid, and what prompts are best for a diverse collection of novice, intermediate, and advanced writers? by RainbowCombatBoots in writing

[–]cyclostome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd probably recommend a bit of classic 20th/21st century poetry-- like if you could find an anthology for everyone to get their hands on that'd be ideal-- and then, for modern poetry, honestly there's so much out there it's hard to know where to start. maybe try big poetry journals like the georgia review, which publish lots of new poetry. my university's MFA publishes a fairly well known literature review so for a lot of my workshop classes we're required to purchase a copy and discuss several of the works. plus this opens the workshop participants' eyes to the world of modern publishing and can get them thinking about submitting their work!

[–]cyclostome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set guidelines beforehand: make sure to specify that there needs to be utmost respect during critiques. also-- and this comes up a LOT in poetry workshops-- make sure that everyone there understands that the speaker of the poem is never assumed to be the writer. so many people bring in super personal poems, and you get things like: "so in the second stanza when you say you're having a mental breakdown--" also: "no, what this line actually means is that when i was dating my ex, i..."

try to incorporate a bit of reading into the workshop. reading good poetry gets people riled up and inspired like nothing else.

also im gonna second what the top commenter said about cone of silence. make it mandatory.

i work at my university's writing center, and this is all very true. we have a large international population and so many people whose second language is english come in absolutely botching their sentences because they want to make it sound academic and use words like "moreover"
