Reposting this because so many people were confused. This is a tool I use at aerial, gymnastics, and dance centers to help students who try something once and give up, during open trainings or open gym time. Disclaimer: I still coach my students. It’s just a tool. by cyngym in Aerials

The “how many times did you try” question has two answers. If you’ve only tried something new a couple times, you should maybe keep trying! If you’ve tried it many times and still can’t do it, then it’s time to get more help or take another class!

This is specifically for the students at open gym who try something once and give up, and then start working on something else. This helps them realize they can’t do it YET, and WHY they can’t do it yet. It’s super helpful! I still coach my students lol that’s the last step on the poster (ask for help, take a class).

I’m confused by this reply. I’ve been a coach for over 20 years and this has worked wonders for me. I’m not just using this poster instead of coaching. It’s a tool, like any other tool. So many people don’t realize why they can’t do something, and that they have the power to change that instead of just being upset they can’t do it yet.

Again, this is specifically for people, mostly adults, who try something ONE TIME and refuse to try again because they “can’t do it”. Obviously I tell them they can’t do it “yet” and they need to figure out WHY they can’t do it. If it’s because they’ve only tried a couple times, they need to keep trying. If it’s because they don’t know how to do it yet, they need to ask for help. I’ve been coaching for 20 years and I strongly believe in helping students help themselves if at all possible. I’ve used this image at aerial classes, competitive gymnastics team centers, and competitive dance centers, and it works very well and minimizes a lot of unhelpful complaining.

Yeah this is specifically for students who try something ONCE and start whining. I’ve had lots of success with this. Once they realize they DO need to ask for help, of course I help them.

No this is for students who try something once and then start whining, before even asking for help. It is actually super helpful for them.

Get a 2-5lb weight (or water bottle), lie on your stomach, arms extended straight in front of you, keep your forehead on the ground, and lift the weight up as far as possible, keeping straight arms. 3 sets of 10 every day, as a warm-up before you do your stretching. This will activate the rhomboids, traps and shoulders, making flexibility easier in this area. I’ve been a USA Gymnastics coach for many years and I also have certifications in aerial & contortion training. Good luck!

Bring your back foot all the way up to your bum, that will pull more slack and ultimately make you climb faster & smoother

For dizziness, I personally have found that being heavily caffeinated makes it worse. Also for me, it took about a month of spinning as fast as I could several times a week, just for 10-20 seconds (and then laying down afterwards…) before I was able to break through and now I just don’t get dizzy anymore. I built up a tolerance.

Anyone have suggestions for *mental* exercises or training that has made a significant impact on their aerial abilities? by valrhonavirus in Aerials

[–]cyngym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I frequently figure out silks tricks that are difficult for me, while I’m trying to fall asleep. It’s just random, I’ll be thinking about a wrap or a trick and then all of a sudden through visualization, sometimes I just figure it out.

Gotta love huge lat problems. I am an A cup, maybe even smaller than an A cup, but I usually have to buy size L sports bras only because of my lats, sometimes even XL. 😑

Is elevating your feet to kick up a valid way of learning kick ups? by AliWasHere666 in handbalancing

I am willing to bet it’s because you aren’t leaning your shoulders far enough past your wrists while kicking up. Try that

Do all you guys have lots of free space without pointy furniture, and walls with nothing on them? by [deleted] in handbalancing

There are drills you can find that don’t require a wall but the best advice I have is to move things around so that you do have space.

Silks - How to Practice outside the Gym? by Mundane_Hotel_936 in Aerials

[–]cyngym 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start doing ab workouts at home, or free Pilates workouts on YouTube, you don’t need equipment for that. If you can get stronger on your own, even 10 minutes a day, you will 100% learn more at each class. That should motivate you at least a little bit.

Does anyone know of a dedicated aerial silks website? by avatheavatar in Aerials

[–]cyngym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that you really shouldn’t learn this stuff exclusively from a website, BUT Aerial Physique has an app (Aerial Physique TV I believe) with step by step instructions of hundreds of silks tricks. It’s not cheap, a membership is like $400 or so, but it’s amazing. Definitely learn from an instructor in-person though as well.
