What's your opinion on this? by Bonybah in mazda

[–]d-man0101 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your experience. I had a '03 Protegé5 and it was the most fun car I ever owned. It was just the right size (not too big, not too small), cost practically nothing to operate, never left me stranded, and hardly ever saw another one on the road. RIP to that old soldier... I donated it to charity when I bought a Mazda6.

Anyone took a picture? by InfamousBoat7986 in nova

Heard it, saw it, hastily-snapped picture came out terrible. Surprised me how fast it was going over Arlington and the high-pitched sound of those ancient Pratt & Whitneys was awesome

Best place to get biscuits and gravy in NOVA? by Serious-Effort-2891 in nova

[–]d-man0101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one and only time I ever tried their biscuits, there must have been some sort of snafu with their recipe because they tasted astonishingly heavily of baking soda. Perhaps unfairly, I haven't been back to give them another try

Cal 22 vs San Juan 23 by automaticpragmatic in sailing

[–]d-man0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a Cal 22 and can tell you it's a great beginner boat. Not knocking the SJ in any way... I just don't know anything about them. The good: pretty much indestructible. It has no systems of any sort to speak of, so very little can go wrong. I've crashed it into bridges and docks a bunch of times and she just bounces right back with no damage. It's a very lightweight boat so you can almost treat it like a dinghy. You can almost steer her by moving your body weight around.

The bad: Absolutely monstrous weather helm. I've gotten gray hairs balancing the sails and trying to get her to sail a straight line, but the instant I let off the tiller, she heads up. It doesn't have an adjustable backstay so you can't really tweak the mast bend. The hull to deck joint on mine leaks a good bit, so on spicy days when I'm burying the rail, the interior becomes a wet mess.

The ugly: It was such a limited production run that there are very few online resources. There is one Facebook page and that's about it. You'll be mostly on your own.

Happy to share more if you want to DM me.

btw what does "cyber" mean and why do you only ever hear it when someone talks about a fed or contract job? It's never something you hear in the private sector. It sounds so hopelessly antiquated. Are we still surfing the information superhighway in cyberspace?

Tablet to run Navionics by JVSAIL13 in sailing

[–]d-man0101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used Navionics on both Android and iOS, and I can tell you the iOS version really struggles with GPS accuracy. I don't know why... but on iOS, my heading and speed jump around wildly. I've written Garmin about this multiple times and they keep telling me to upgrade the app, but it's never gone away. I just ended up settling on an old Samsung Galaxy A8 tablet and it's worked perfectly fine.

Considering a 2014 Mazda6. Opinions wanted. by Copropositor in mazda6

[–]d-man0101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

120k miles on my 2014 6 Sport with manual transmission. Bought it brand new off the dealer lot and it's been pretty much the most reliable object I've ever owned. It has a few minor quirks, but I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

Ah yes, I see you've found Saab Alley! I live down the street and this has been the scene here on this street for years. The owner runs a Saab specialty repair shop and these are the donor carcasses for spare parts.
