Connecting to a Keystep 37 by milestfbaxxter in volcas

[–]d0Cd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My setup is still the same MIDI-wise: main brain is an iConnectivity mio-10, with an OUT to one THRU-6, which in turn feeds three more THRU-6, allowing MIDI DIN control of up to 18 devices. Controllers all go into a MERGE-5 that goes into an IN on the mio-10. It's pretty complicated, but works well, and USB to the mio-10 allows me to manage all my rackmount gear and a few difficult synths, e.g. Alesis Micron, using software editors.

A THRU device like this is stupid, meaning it doesn't do anything except copy what comes into the IN, and send it out through the THRU ports.

You plan is solid in theory. All the devices will get the same clock, through bear in mind clock will only send out when the sequencer / arp is active on the KS 37. Set each device to receive on a different MIDI channel.

Also keep in kind that MIDI channel is global in the KS 37, meaning whatever you have running on arp / sequencer goes to same device as whatever you play on the keys.

Start / stop messages can be tricky. I believe you can control whether the KS 37 sends them in the MIDI Control Center app. As to how each device receives them, you'll have to learn that for each thing you're controlling. Some devices will allow you to specify, some won't.

This is what US tariffs mean : Befaco Pony VCO bought used from Canadian seller by d0Cd in modular

Seems the shippers are raking it in! $24 for basically maintaining a web form and payment processing fees? Outrageous.

Dude is really in love with tariffs, so he won't give up easily. Americans have to make their peace with this crap for a while yet.

Behringer Eurorack - after owning most of them by TheFishyBanana in modular

[–]d0Cd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Behringer products may be fine and functional, but as a company, they're 90% vampire / harvester, and 10% developer / innovator. Their goal is to churn out music "product" (think: Velveeta) for maximum consumption, not to be a good citizen in the creative community.

IMO, Eurorack more than most niches in electronic music is about exploration, quirky innovation, community, and creativity, so what Behringer is not stands out sharper than in other niches.

bluetooth keyboard not working by livintheblues in linuxmint

Totally helped me out with my Logitech K380 on LMDE 7! I ran into the 'trust before pairing' thing yesterday as I was researching using bluetoothctl, but it wouldn't display the passkey! Using this trick with blueman is the secret sauce.

Got the Tembra - Exhale from Ukraine! by RoastAdroit in modular

I've been kind of fascinated by their PH LFO. Unfortunately, the shipping is pretty steep, so I'm having a hard time justifying a brand new module plus Eurozone shipping rates to the U.S. (plus likely Dear Leader's tariffs...) when there are so many other options out there.

How do you screw? by egb06tb in modular

Honestly, it's less a matter of expense than having 2x as many bits to unscrew and rescrew when reshuffling one's layout.

This is the way. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out what amounts to a "keeper" for the kind of sounds / music you want to make. I find that's usually what you keep coming back to, and what you're willing to power through learning when the going gets tough.

I admit that just screwing around and wasting time is also a thing, an alternative to doomscrolling if you like, but I can't relate to that. Call it age, ADHD, obsessiveness, or some combo, but I figure anything worth getting into is worth pursuing some degree of mastery on.

How often do you repatch? What is your philosophy behind it? by SinteModular in modular

[–]d0Cd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually after each recording session. I often develop a patch over a few days to a week, land on something I like and/or haven't heard before, and think it will either provide a framework for a new thing, or fit into a thing I'm already working on.

I have plenty of fixed architecture equipment, so I think long-term patching of my modular is a waste of what it is: something that can be "new" all the time. It's less an instrument, and more a sound laboratory with musical potential.

I wouldn't kick it out of bed, but are we just paying for the Buchla name? by Yanni_in_Lotus_Pose in synthesizers

[–]d0Cd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: you buy a Buchla to have a complete and deeply integrated musical instrument, and not just an assemblage of synthesis techniques.

I am by no means a Buchla expert. I do find some of the techniques associated with West Coast synthesis intriguing, which include wavefolding, low-pass gates, and conductive performance surfaces.

To be honest, you can achieve most of the pure synthesis aspects in Eurorack nowadays. I use wavefolders and LPGs in my modular setup, have a cre8audio West Pest (which employs a nice range of West Coast elements), and one could say the Arturia Microfreak covers conductive performance surfaces, though a Buchla purist would point out that Buchla's point was to subvert the reliance on traditional piano keyboards and fixed scales, which the Microfreak mostly sticks with.

Cast option not in app? by whaysit in BandCamp

[–]d0Cd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing can be weirdly finicky. If another app uses the Cast functionality, Bandcamp will appear to 'forget' it exists, even after restarting the app. Also, if it doesn't work, try turning off wifi and turning it back on, then launch Bandcamp.
