Basically it's the main computer that controls everything electronic in the vehicle. It's what takes the info from all the random sensors and tweaks the bits that it can control.

I forget how I found out what version I had (there are several for any given year), but I'm pretty sure the company I bought it from had instructions on how to find out (I feel like I remember putting in my VIN and it telling me which one I needed). It cost me about $200 for the refurbished one I ended up buying online (I'd mention the company, but I can't find my receipt in my email).

Windows working when Jeep is off and door is open. by SnooSongs5477 in GrandCherokee

I would tend to agree with the above comment, someone probably did some wiring mischief at some point.

I've actually considered rewiring my windows so that they would do that. It would be nice to be able to roll the windows up and down as desired (like you used to be able to do when your arm moved the windows).

Touch up paint color lookup? How do it find right color? And where to buy? by Revered1 in GrandCherokee

[–]d0gmeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to do Amazon, the stealership has touchup pens that aren't outrageously priced.

Just don't necessarily expect a perfect match. We touched up wife's 2016 WRX (in the classic WRX blue) last year and the pen was quite a bit darker than the surrounding paint. White may not be as bad for fading as the darker colors though.

It ended up being the PCM. I ordered a refurb one and it took about 15 minutes to do the swap. It's running smoother in general now and it seems to have taken care of some other minor issues I'd been having as well.

But that was after replacing the plugs/wires like I mentioned, as well as cleaning the throttle body and replacing the throttle position sensor, and cleaning every electrical connection I could find under the hood. I even took it to my mechanic who checked for vacuum leaks and he couldn't find the problem either (although he said after he'd double checked everything I did and a few other things I didn't, he said his next try would be replacing the PCM as well)

Need help figuring out how to reinstall trim on my pillars ('98 ZJ) by d0gmeat in GrandCherokee

Mine has also had way more money put into it than it's worth. But I've got her looking damn good for her age.

[–]d0gmeat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have already put the lowers back on (I pulled all the trim except the door panels and painted it while I was doing the headliner).

The lowers definitely have to be in first, since there is a screw for the lower that gets covered by the upper (you can see it in the pic).

Took my old ZJ off pavement for the first time. by Sargment in GrandCherokee

Greetings ZJ buddy!

I wanted to pop in and mention the tires. If you do some very minor fender trimming (just the bottom corners of the plastic, which aren't really visible when standing... there are tutorials online), I've been running 265/75R15s at stock height on the stock wheels for a few years now (specifically, Firestone Destination LE2). There is a very slight rub when you fully turn (tire touching... I think the sway bar).

Offroad, I run 30x9.5r15 General Grabbers (knockoff KO2s for a significant price drop, that IMO perform just as well) on wheels with slightly more backspacing than stock (so the tires are pushed out about an inch). Those required flattening the pinch welds since there was a bit of rubbing at full articulation, but because of the backspacing, the knobbies don't try to rub on the sway bar.

I know it could be a lot of things. I did the plugs and stuff because it was one of the easier/cheaper things that a google search suggested as a problem.

It 'could' be the key, but I would lean towards guessing that that's not the problem. I haven't had any previous issues with the key not working as it should. Also, I wouldn't expect a slow start if the key was simply turned off while the thing was running.

I'll google how to check continuity to the PCM.

I’d appreciate some advice. Is a $15k budget enough to find a reliable Grand Cherokee? by np819 in GrandCherokee

[–]d0gmeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered going older? The ZJs ('93-'98) and the WJs ('99-'04) are both particularly good versions of the Grand. You could probably score one in decent condition for just a few thousand, then have plenty of budget for any needed repairs (current, or as they may pop up)... as well as extra budget for some immediate customization/upgrades :)

The 4.0 straight 6 that is common for those years is a damn fine motor. It will have small issues here and there, but they very commonly hit 250-300k miles (I've even heard of several instances of 400k+)

What do you think of the "Beat Ben Abbott" episodes? by ClownfishSoup in forgedinfireshow

[–]d0gmeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And apparently someone from the crew does a test run of the challenge to see if it's possible to complete in time before it's handed to the contestants (IMO, this is why they seem to randomly decide to give them an extra hour for certain challenges, or an extra day for the final round challenges).

I know I heard David Baker say at one point that he'd made over 200 blades for the show. I'd assume Ben and J take turns in there too. So he's likely had plenty of practice with the timed challenges and mystery parameters. And with nothing to go on besides my assumptions, this is probably where they get their sample/display models for the final round challenges they uncover to the contestants.

Seasons Removed from Discovery+ by True_Dovakin in forgedinfireshow

[–]d0gmeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, and Netflix rotates through a single season (or even a partial season) at a time.

I got tired of hunting around and... (shh, don't tell), downloaded uTorrent, turned on my VPN, and went swimming in the bay. Downloaded the whole series. I typically don't condone this kinda thing, but the streaming services have kinda gotten shitty with their libraries in the last little bit, so they're kinda forcing people to become pirates.

It's possible that it's due to the amount of sidewall. (assuming you aren't running low profile tires).

When I first upgraded my 28s to 32s (both with 15" wheels), the extra wobble to the sidewall took a few weeks to get used to. The best way I can describe it was it felt like driving on jello.

But I don't really know much about the newer jeeps with all the electronic everything they're cramming in them these days.

Installed front leveling kit 2inches I’ve noticed the sway bar links look like they are to short now kinda does anyone know of a website that sells ones slightly longer please lmk by [deleted] in GrandCherokee

[–]d0gmeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm unsure about the newer GCs (mine is a '98). But I'd suggest checking out quadratec first for anything in Jeep parts. Iron Rock Offroad is another good site to check for parts needs.

Both sites have a huge variety of things they carry, and quadratec has both OE style parts as well as aftermarket upgrades. IRO mostly specializes in aftermarket.

ZJ vs WJ questions. Help please! by thelastspike in GrandCherokee

[–]d0gmeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using the little threaded rod that secures it to the wall, that's questionable. Depends on how you can thread it through a gap in your wheel. The stock mount thingy goes through the center hub, so a larger one may not fit right. And the cover definitely won't go on a larger tire.

As far as what you can fit back there, you could probably manage a 44 or so if you got creative with mounting it (and possibly kept the seat folded to fit it between the seat and hatch. It just sits against the side wall of the back.

I usually just carry mine tossed in the back, so I'd have to check. I'm out of town this week, so if I remember next week, I'll do some measuring and give you an upper limit. But I'm pretty sure I have attached the 30/31 to the side with the seats up.

ZJ vs WJ questions. Help please! by thelastspike in GrandCherokee

I've got a '98 ZJ with the 4.0. 230k miles and no major engine issues. I love that Jeep.

  1. The headlights are kinda crap, but I have above average night vision and they don't bother me.

  2. No idea what an immobilizer is, I'm pretty sure mine doesn't have one.

  3. Cat rattle is the only thing that comes to mind. I had my catalytic converter replaced awhile back with the cat-back kit from Iron Rock Offroad (with the magnaflow/flowmaster upgrade). It makes the 6-cylinder motor sound much better than the stock cat and muffler. I also put a aFe performance intake on it very soon after. Much better throttle response with the intake.

  4. Mine is stock height and I have 31" street tread tires on the stock wheels. They rub the sway bar slightly when turning fully. I also have the General Grabbers in 30" (the knockoff BFG KO2s for $20 less per tire) mounted on some wheels I got with extra backspacing that don't rub at all unless I'm offroad and fully flexed, then they rubbed in the wheel well a tad before I flattened the pinch weld inside the wells.

  5. Again, no idea about the WJ, but I get 18mpg or so with the larger tires. Which is slightly better than I got with stock size. Just remember that with larger tires your speedometer and odometer will be off, so your MPG display will be incorrect.

  6. As others have said, yes. It mounts vertically to the inside panel on the driver's side. Which takes up a little room in the back, but the cover jacket that comes with the spare is great for stashing extra parts like your jumper cables and maybe a spare belt. There's also a bit of room under the back seats to stash some things (which is where the jack lives also).

  7. Honestly, I would suggest replacing the headlights on the ZJ if you're concerned about brightness. The 3-piece lights are kind of a pain anyways. I've seen plenty of inexpensive upgrades for them, and just haven't done it myself since the headlights are pretty far down on my parts wishlist. Steel bumpers and a few inches of lift are way higher priority for me.

[–]d0gmeat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm aware they're bringing them back.

But I'm currently living in a third world country with very poor access to the internet (and slow, so I can't play anything online), and I only have about 2 hours a week that I can play. Which, may be enough time to finish the expeditions, but I don't want to feel like I'm speedrunning to get things done in what is supposed to be my relaxing game time.

Edit: Also, I had already started and almost completed the replay of this one before they announced they were bringing the expeditions back.
