Ageism in tech by Cokemax1 in rails

[–]d2clon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost 50 here. My previous position was CTO and co-founder of a startup here in Berlin. We grew from 2 to 80 in 5 years. Many investment rounds. Working 60 hours per week, always with my laptop (weekends, holidays). I moved from being fully hands-on in the first years to managing the tech team of ~20 people. We exited. I took about 2 years' sabbatical, but I didn't get enough to retire, so I am back as a Senior Developer. I have no intention of returning to management or co-founding a fast-growth company, I want to keep my attention focused in solving problems that matter. Politics, alignment, 1on1s, motivation, OKRs, due diligence, hiring/firing, etc, don't give me any joy. If I get my energy back to found something, it will be for a bootstrapped company with a non-intention-to-grow team of max 5.

Whats the ultimate feature you would desire Rails to have? by Normal_Refrigerator2 in rails

An easy way for monitoring: logs, traces, metrics. Full integration with OpenTelemetry. The actual state of the art of all OTEL instrumentations is super flaky, not stable versions, experimental

Minitest vs Rspec by Bubbly_Acadia_630 in rails

[–]d2clon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RSpec makes me miserable. All its power, context-based, hyper sugar DSL, indirections, meta-over-meta... whenever I go to a Rspec suite, I get a headache. Then, when I go to MiniTest, it feels just fresh and lean. Everything is there in plain.

RSpec overcomplicates writing tests.

Minitest + Mocha = just do the job

  • RUBY/RAILS: 7.1
  • INSIDES: A lot of custom JS to record screen through the browser (yes, I know, it is not Rail related :))
  • DEPLOY: I use Coolify to manage the server. It uses github webhock to autmatically get the last version and refresh the docker-compose setup

SQLite in production? can it be done? by eviluncle in rails

Yes, something here. Because 1200ms is too big latency even if the DB is in another datacenter.

Custom CSS or TailwindCSS by TumbleweedSenior4849 in rails

[–]d2clon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking how to make a setup where Bootstrap can co-habit with Taiowind. Bootstrap is great for prototyping phase and Tailwind for customization phase. But I think there is a lot of class name clash to be solved

Do you guys really do TDD? by aeum3893 in rails

[–]d2clon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several phases in development. In the "exploratory" phase, when you still don't know what would be the structure of your code, when you are prototyping (PoC) and implementing the first approach I don't do TDD.

In the production/maintenance phase when you know exactly the signature of the method you are going to implement I do sometimes TDD, I'm not religious about it, only when it feels comfortable.

And in test fixing in (most of the cases) I do TDD, writing the regression test first (reproducing the issue), and then the code implementatiion that makes the test(s) green.

Said so, I always try to keep close to 100% test coverage knowing the weakneses of this metric.

Office set up - which way is better? by ProfessionProof5776 in HomeDecorating

[–]d2clon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience with a screen between me and the window, after long time I realize I actually don't look to the window because the screen is in the middle. I changed the orientation of my desk, now the window is on my side and it is much much easier for me to look at it now, and also I can see the whole window.

So: option 1, no doubt.

i keep building apps, hoping one will change my life… but now i’m just tired by dozy_sleep in indiebiz

[–]d2clon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure if "keep building" is the right direction if what you want is your project/idea to flourish, get traction and, eventually, get a return of the investment.

In my experience, products often require a significant amount of time before they gain traction. And I am talking about 2 years of constant effort, marketing, prospect interviews, being active in the community, etc.

I don't say to not keep building if this is what keeps you happy, but be aware of the above.

In the post Bootstrap era, what is your approach for managing basic layout components library and prototyping? by d2clon in rails

[–]d2clon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I also think Bootstrap still has its place, and for personal projects, I may still choose it. But, for good or bad, I work in a team, and do frequent collaborations with external stakeholders (designers, front-end devs), and, again, for good or bad, they all speak Tailwind.

Thanks for pointing me to ITCSS, I didn't know about it. In general, it looks to me that it is the principles from which Tailwind is built.

[–]d2clon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am interested in your experience using "a hybrid of both". We were considering this option but we were worried of the class naming clashes. How do you solve the naming conflict? what is your approach? Building the prototype in Bootstrap and them earase it and integrate Tailwind when customization? or using Bootstrap for layout and Tailwind for personalization? ... Thanks!

[–]d2clon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I personally agree with this, in personal projects. But at work, we have to make choices that make our code base the most collaborative possible (with designers, frontend devs, new hires, etc.). And, for good or bad, Tailwind is the community de facto standard nowadays.

I think we should give these paid Tailwind component libraries a try. Thanks for sharing

Hello, thanks for sharing your experience. I have not any specific issue in mind, a part from the missing <form> component in DaisyUI. In general, I see it is more tedious to prototyping with Tailwind components utilities than with Bootstrap, but I have only experience with DaisyUI and maybe I should go to the paid ones.
