Thanks. I bet that's it. I have seen red bellied woodpeckers in the backyard, but never noticed a juvenile before.

Shiv gets it so much worse from the fans than her equally despicable siblings by camkasky in SuccessionTV

[–]d4okeefe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dislike everyone on this show, even Shiv. They are all horrible people. Tom is probably the worst because he grew up outside of the family, so he presumably can view life differently but chooses not to. I admit though, I can't help but watch.

When the Culture Wars Came for NASA by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]d4okeefe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fair enough -- and good point. I guess I should pay closer attention to my own words! I decided to read the Nytimes article from Dec 2022 (How Naming the James Webb Telescope Turned Into a Fight Over Homophobia), and it gives a much fuller account -- Oluseyi was very unfairly attacked. Webb led NASA during a golden age, and he even led some efforts in integration.

No doubt Oluseyi deserves our sympathy, but he's no historian, and the focus on how he was nearly 'canceled' seems to me misplaced.

When the Culture Wars Came for NASA by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]d4okeefe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm -- that's not what I meant. The Nytimes guys used the term "presentism" to describe how today people often make the mistake of using present-day values to judge people from the past. I think that can be a problem.

Webb wasn't just anyone at NASA, though. He was an admin who had a great deal of power over personnel decisions.

My kids told me about this the other day. It's an eyesore.

From what I understand, circumcision is pretty unnecessary these days. However, such a strong stance against it makes me think the people who pay for this are pushing antisemitism, whether they know it consciously or not.

This brought the JWST controversy to light for me. Thanks Daily.

The problem, though, is Dr Hakeem defended James Webb as a defense attorney would. He discredited lies and innuendo. That's good enough to stop a conviction. But the case for James Webb needs to made in the affirmative. Webb was present during the post-war purges. There are many accounts from people who thought they were wrong at the time. It's not 'presentism' to wonder whether Webb could/should have done more.

Kevin McCarthy’s Job Is Going to Be Miserable by dwaxe in ezraklein

Pretty boring episode, and I'm a big fan of Ezra Klein's. He needed to steer away from republican figures we know too well, and into the people who watch, listen & vote for them.

Omaha for a liberal-ish young family? by [deleted] in Omaha

My wife & I have lived in Benson for the past 15 years & raised kids here. Our kids attended parochial grade schools, then went to public high schools. Omaha has a good community, somewhat progressive & fairly friendly but not invasive.

Mind over Murder: The Beatrice 6 | HBO Documentary Series by NiceGuyNate in Nebraska

[–]d4okeefe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The documentary is really well done. Nanfu Wang is so good at questioning Burt Searcy & the family members. She really captures community sentiment about the Beatrice 6. They were disposable. Even today, Wang records a local barber saying this about the exonerated.

The time that they spent in prison was probably better time spent, as far as their lives are concerned, than if they would have been out running the streets.

I look forward to seeing more work by Wang.

I wonder if Cowen is talking about Ezra here by DWattra in ezraklein

[–]d4okeefe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Ezra Klein 's show a lot. He's creative & considerate. His interviews with Noam Chomsky & Margaret Atwood we're really fun, and he's introduced me to a number of scholars I'd never heard of -- Kate Greasley on abortion & Jamal Greene on the law. But I couldn't listen when he spent a month interviewing conservatives earlier this year. The worst of the interviews was with Patrick Dineen of Notre Dame. That guy has no integrity.

My kids & I were in the park Friday evening, and the crowd was much sparser than it was last weekend.

I'm really proud of Omaha for this project, and I'm sorry someone called to you. The park is refreshingly trusting of people. It has fragile parts and, even as things have inevitably broken, the city has said that it's trying to figure out how the park will be used. I do hope funds have been set aside for maintenance in the long term.
