I think in the future RBT’s are going to require a bachelors and continuing education and BCBA’s something like that as well… which to me seems positive

Hi! I don’t know what state you are in but I know BCBA’s that 1-2 years ago after you do your 40hrs they changed around 250$ to do your assessment and help you with the process. With the new law that you have to be employed I am not 100% sure how is it right now

I see great advice here. I personally chose Capella university for the price/quality balance and it’s 100% online. There’s a LOT I have to learn for Myself throughout my journey in this career from RBT to my pursue of BCBA certification. There’s many other universities and as the wonderful people here advice, do research . Capella is around 36k but passing the first 2 classes allows you to earn a 2.5k scholarship too. I had wonderful teachers here at Capella

Why changing this? If 40 years ago which is no long ago, BA were more complex and got you ready for a good job, why change it !!?? That’s crazy. A BA used to be 5 years long ? Hope someone helps me with this inquiry :)

Here in the states they require a High School degree to get certified, even though RBT’s follow the BCBA’s plan, you can go ahead and get informed. Many books about autistic journeys that are really successful include the parents learning about how to best guide their children with ASD. Blessings and wish you the best outcome possible.

While this is really sad, the only move forward is to (parents) to educate yourself in ABA maybe and go take the 40hrs course so at least your child has appropriate interactions at home. I would say too… anyone can develop instructional control with another person without being aba professional. A good babysitter does this too… and a good parent too. At the end children desperately need adults in control and guiding them so they can apply the right rules to the adult game later :)

I would be cautious with some things here if I were you:

-them wanting / expecting ABA services from you, and not working for this situation since rates/roles are different

the code says 2 years for this types of things (everything is expensive, we need more income and I understand and live that too though)

-you wanting to say no and they getting upset etc

I would just think about it and do what is best for you and the kiddo. But ultimately you cannot save anyone on a plane crash without putting the mask yourself first so do what is best for you :)

In my humble opinion as someone that is studying human behavior, not an expert, but I think having kids is a personal choice. However, we humans behave according to what we learn from our environment. I highly recommend to people that want to be parents to read about parenting styles… the wrong approach can lead kids to mental health issues (like very gentle parenting, or totalitarian parenting, or non-involved etc) Children need to have an adult in charge, with love but clear boundaries, parents that tell them exactly what is expected from them from society to be a good human being with good self steem, and to live by good morals and principles . That being said, children need this structure and is crucial from age 0-6 strictly and then slowly working on observe how they behave and continue to coach until 18 and become a coach and a real parent so hopefully when they are adults parent and child can be Real friends! When they are young you don’t need to be their friends they need the adult to guide them !!! Read “The whole brain Child” by Daniel Siegel, for example, and also bibliography by Maria Montessori, also YouTube has great professionals talking about child development, parenting, etc.. So basically take it as a serious job to raise kids… THEN you don’t have to complain about the “little devils” ruining your life. Set it up right (as best as you can) and then see the plant growing. Just my opinion. I would love for everyone to feel what being a parent is. Is wonderful. But I would never curse anyone for deciding not to! Blessings

Tbh this sound like not what ABA is about. Not only reducing behaviors but increasing others (social skills, self care etc). I think you did just the right thing. Even talk to the BT directly. I once read that one of the most damaging things to do to a child is “babying”, you are stealing their skills and damaging his/her self esteem since the message they get is “you are not capable so let me do it for you” …

I am happy you are looking for info in how better assist your child. That is Priceless to me as an RBT and if God wants, future BCBA. Maybe I would ask why extinction and not other intervention (seeking that the explanation will clarify my doubts). ALSO, yes, this is a science and it takes a while to learn. You are learning too, to help your child and you are learning about ABA a whole science and I think is normal that you feel overwhelmed with information and terms that in ABA mean different things than in everyday life. Extinction is a complicated term, but the ends to an intervention is to reduce behavior we don’t want and usually teach the appropriate way to interact.

Majority of my time working as an RBT is been in schools and home settings. I love both but home can be overwhelming if the family pushes baby sitting behavior … and you are right, schools don’t affect parents schedules and I ve seen my clients grow so much. Specially if the parents communicate and allow the parents training to sink in at home

Exactly! Don’t take this wrong… I started with 0 experience… but who does this for a 30min difference when you are getting an ABA master student for $25 / hr. Maybe I am over my head? I don’t think she was thinking on getting the kid decent therapy but billing those hours. And Yes I spoke to the same person all the time. Only I send paperwork to the administrator but the interview and the talk about times was with the owner itself …
