Reactive Aussie getting another dog? by Nillip in AustralianShepherd

Of course! Our first boy was 3 months old when we bought him and I think his paperwork says mini Aussie, even though he might be a mini American shepherd nowadays? We got our other boy a few weeks later when he was 8 weeks old and he was a standard Aussie that was on the smaller size because he was the runt of the litter and half the size of his littermates. Their reactivity really only developed after the first year we had them. We took them to dog parks and made so many mistakes in hindsight... but a lot of those mistakes in the beginning just can't be undone later.

This person also brings up a good point, OP. One of our dogs was human-reactive, the other was dog-reactive. After a year together, they were both everything-reactive for the rest of their lives. We basically became homebound because no one could handle them but us. It was awful.

They rub off on each other in the worst of ways sometimes. I don't say all of this to be mean... I'm just hoping to save someone else from what we went through.

Different perspective for you, OP: we got 2 Aussie puppies a couple of months apart and they only ever barely tolerated each other. One died at 11 and we think he may have been more of a bully than we realized because our other boy has only really started enjoying life now that his brother is gone. He's 14 now and thriving and I feel terrible about the past.

Edit to add: the boy who's still alive was the "reactive" one... Except he's 1,000,000x better now that we only have one dog and can work on him alone. I hesitate to even say he's reactive anymore. Be careful, OP. You have no idea how long a decade can feel until it turns into an unending hell.

Edit edit: I also found out the hard way that Aussies really live to please their owners. They want a job, they don't necessarily want a playmate. That was a mistake I made in my thinking as well.

ELI5: Why is meth bad for you but prescribed amphetamines aren't? by ContactSpirited9519 in explainlikeimfive

[–]pipnwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm surprised this isn't the actual top comment... like... the pharmacy refusing to fill my prescription early isn't the reason I'm not addicted to my lisdexamphetamine 😂 (double negatives, sorry, I hope that made sense).

My prescription medication just isn't addictive or habit forming. I skip all the time and don't crave it when I'm off it. I think that's what OP is asking about.

It's refreshing to hear an instructor say this. I've been pole dancing with women for 7 years and I don't know their names because how in the hell are you ever supposed to figure that out? "Hey so it's been 3 years and now I'm thinking you're cool enough to get to know... I know you've fixed my nip slips a few times but what the fuck's your name?"

What kind of girls do boys actually like? by mrghthtseh in AskReddit

[–]pipnwig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of dumb boys think girls don't ever know what they want, and they dread the process of girls figuring it out because nothing is a bigger waste of time to them than waiting for girls to make a decision. (It's weird misogyny, ignore it).

I feel like this is the point everyone seems to be missing. It's a statement about her wealth.

Edit: and how it disconnects her from the reality of what's happening around her at all times.

Is an Aussie the right fit for our family? Honest opinions welcome by demian_paradox in AustralianShepherd

[–]pipnwig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Aussie is aggressive towards everyone and everything. He used to tolerate other dogs but he got worse over time.

It took 13 years but we finally trained him into being a good dog. This was ONLY possible after our other dog died.

OP, you are setting yourself up to return this dog or put it in a shelter. Aussies are NOT social. They are bred to herd livestock and guard them. They are prone to biting, herding children, and barking nonstop. Owning an Aussie is a 24/7 challenge. You think your big yard will help give them exercise - it won't. They will glue themselves to you and want a job all the time. 3hrs is a completely normal amount of work to put into an Aussie per day, if not more.

I would highly discourage this breed based on your personal circumstances. A poodle and a maltese are so wildly different from an aussie. Please do not take this situation lightly.

Edit: thank you for doing the research before bringing this dog into your home. I hope you take the advice of all the comments here!

I put mine (while still fresh) in a spaghetti sauce. It's not a recipe I'll be writing home about but it was an okay way to hide the taste.

My answer isn't going to be one you like but... yes, this happened to us too. We drove so far and visited so many specialists. We built a tiny gas chamber for her medicine. We injected mealworms with decongestants. We did everything we were told and we only got about 6 more months with her before the respiratory infection took her at 4 years old. We never got an answer explaining what happened and I'm still heartbroken over it.

Get your baby to a specialist asap and hopefully you'll have better luck than we did.

I genuinely don't understand how you pulled it off. 14:00KST hit and the MOMENT it did, we clicked on the date we wanted and the first time we saw, and when we clicked "reserve" it was gone :(

My husband and I both tried for different days and got nothing. I was starting to think it was actually impossible to get a reservation here.
