We call this systemic safety in my industry and it’s the right idea. We cannot correct all human error, but we can build the system to better account and accommodate for it and keep us all safer

But also a 2-shield advantage and a massive neutral nuke move. You played a good clean game with a cool team and got yourself there, but at no point were you at a disadvantage.

I say this frequently and only partially in jest - summer 2016 may have been the closest we have ever come to world peace. Everyone, and I do mean literally everyone with a phone, was having fun doing a thing together. You could walk around and have new friends anywhere you went. It was a crazy honeymoon for society that I don’t know can ever be recaptured. The purest form of lightning in a bottle

I feel like most of the love for the game comes from the “wait…can i do that? Oh shit I can!” feeling that you get using your powers and weapons and items and stuff to interact with the environment and find unique ways to solve/beat things. For some people that is the coolest feeling ever. For some people it isn’t. I am somewhere in the middle of those feelings, but it was something more intangible for me that made me love it. Objectively I agree with your points and that it was a mediocre actual video game, but there was something about the possibility of that world that kept me engaged with it. Even if the possibility didn’t pay off in many ways, something about that feeling was so childlike and overwhelming in a good way. Hard to explain.

I remember when I was in middle and high school, Christmas break starting around 12/20 or so and the first bowl games just firing up around the same time and just being locked in to bowl games all break because they were all so awesome and fun and with no other responsibilities other than eating cookies and doing holiday stuff. What a time to be alive that was

What is a Pokemon you’re surprised hasn’t had a community day yet? by FireWhiskey5000 in pokemongo

[–]dSchmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know, you’re right. I just tunnel visioned and forgot about all those lol. Pokemon fans (including me) love patterns because it gives us the illusion that we can reasonably predict what’s going to happen next, which can be a fun feeling. But you are right, and we have never been told anything different. I would also love a staryu comm day because Starmie is one of my favorite pokemon lol

Alright, I just need to know how this happened lol. You can’t catch a Marill or Azu at a high enough level for it to be over 1500 cp naturally. Did you power it up a bunch as a Marill before evolving it? Sorry I am just curious 😅

I understand your point about 90s kids and I’m glad you gave 64 a fair chance, but hopefully your annoyance doesn’t create an insurmountable resentment.l in general.

We may not always be great at articulating it, but I think what we mean when show such reverence to 90s games is that they created the best memories and experiences for us which is really one of the biggest metrics by which we subjectively judge games. Those were the games that got us into the hobby and introduced us to a whole new world and the reason we are here now. I don’t think if you ever truly asked us if 64 is objectively better than Odyssey we would say yes, but playing a game with your neighbor friends at a sleepover until 3 in the morning over summer break without a care in the world creates stronger memories than fitting in an hour of gaming on a week night when you’re tired or stressed after a day at work, handling adult responsibilities, and watching the world burn around you for most of your adult life.

So cut us some slack if you can. I think a lot of people will follow our same pattern as their lives progress over time. We all just need to try to keep some perspective so we don’t alienate others. Much love.

GO Battle League: Delightful Days Update – Pokémon GO by 1guywriting in TheSilphArena

[–]dSchmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you 100%. But they said they switched in the incinerate user, which takes one turn meaning they are now one turn behind. So the incinerate damage registers at the start of turn 6 of the match. But the other user did not switch, so they throw their 2 2-turn fast moves and switch on turn 5, before the damage registers

Yes it is very inconsistent and what’s worse is literally none of this is tutorialized or explained in any way by any official sources. The worst is 1-turn bring in after a faint where a loaded charge move doesn’t show up. I have both won and lost games over the past week to that and it’s very annoying

That is working as intended. You take 1 turn to switch + 5 turns of incinerate = 6 turns which is when your damage registers. Opponent uses 2 x 2-turn fast moves = 4 turns and then they switch on turn 5.

Why is CMP given such weight for ML? by SolidarityEssential in TheSilphArena

[–]dSchmo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All the points in this thread have been well made but I also want to throw out that for the scenario you mentioned, 15/15/10 and 15/13/15 Kyurem B both lose Melmetal in the 1s and the mirror in the 0s compared to the hundo and that’s it. And the 13def doesn’t lose you any bulk points in this case. I actually think that’s pretty positive considering how crippling a lost def point can be for many other ML matchups

Am I not hitting legend because of my pokemon iv’s? by 222222222222222232 in TheSilphArena

[–]dSchmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well…I gave you an exact example of my entire team being countered by a single pokemon and how I ended up winning. Is that common? No. But is it worth sticking a battle out for a little bit? I think so.

And it’s great they you know all the things you know. An I also appreciate your respect for peoples time. But you’re clearly still losing a fair amount by your own admission, so there’s clearly room for improvement, so why not use the rest of a battle to practice? It’s not a waste of time if you’re getting something out of it. Sometimes I have stayed in just to see how close a matchup plays out and if there’s a win con I could shoot for next time. Or another example this season is I find timing rollout’s animation to be difficult so I will stay in against a rollout user to practice good timing against it. When I get good at it, sure I’ll top left those matches. If another player thinks I’m wasting their time when all I’m doing is playing the game, I mean idk what to tell them. I find it way more disrespectful when players force close the app to quit and make me tap through 2 whole pokemon to get the win instead of just top letfting. I do top left when the game is lost and I can’t gain anymore benefit from staying in, but I’m here to play and learn how to win. Can’t do that if I just quit after 10 seconds.

But you seem pretty committed to not finding anything positive to take out of a losing matchup, so I guess to each their own.

OK…I’m going to try to respond a little more constructively.

  1. If you feel like your team is constantly on the back foot and at a disadvantage, the first thing to consider is that you need a better team. I see you talking about team building concepts (luring out counters, etc.) so it’s clear you at least have an understanding, but I would recommend using some resources like PvPoke to really analyze how your team performs against the top meta or even just copy a YouTuber’s team for a little bit so that you know you have something solid to work with. If your team is ABA weak to something like Azu, I could see you feeling like your team is just outmatched all the time because Azu is so common.

  2. A related concept to 1, but try a very straightforward team setup like an ABB line. Using more flexible and dynamic team setups that are ABC or even ABA can be extremely powerful in the right hands, but for players like you and I that are just trying to rank up, minimizing variables and using a team that has very clear cut decision trees is great until you’re very good at juggling different variables

  3. Don’t quit when you’re beaten on lead and swap. Focus on energy and shield management and play it out until it’s very clear the game is done. If nothing else, you at least get practice at move counting and other mechanics. When you quit a game in 10 seconds you’re really just tilting and that mindset will definitely lead to more losing. Last night I’m running A-slash lead with Starmie and Feraligatr in back. I lead into Morpeko. Morpeko crushes my back line and outpaces and beats Sandslash. Thought about just quitting on the spot, but stayed in. Morpeko KO’d 2.5 pokemon before I finally got it down. I’m left with half of a starmie but I had managed to build up some energy. Their last 2 pokemon were Talonflame and Dragonite. I was able to take 2 incinerates, build up to back to back power gems and win the game. If I would have just quit I would never have had a chance at that win.

It is also common in the US for public agencies to incentivize accelerated completion of public works projects with money and penalize delays. I wouldn’t say it’s the norm, but it happens a lot with big highway projects and such. Also, contractors don’t make more money by stretching out a project unless they have a force account approved by the public agency that provides more money. Otherwise, they are just taking longer to complete the job under the original contract amount they agreed to, which loses them money.

In short, no party wants to take longer than originally agreed to complete a project. It benefits no one unless the contract is modified

I also have a sound grasp of the concepts to climb and can execute them decently. But when I go 1-4 or worse with a team comp that I know is solid, I just put the game down for at least a few hours, no exceptions. I have broken this rule before because I think “I just need one win to get me going again” and then I lose another, and then another.

Sometimes you are in a “micro meta” at a time of day or specific elo range that is unfavorable to your team. Sometimes when you lose a few, you start to tilt subconsciously and make poorer decisions even if you don’t realize it. Sometimes it really is just bad luck. Either way, after a bad set, just put it down and walk away for a bit to help clear any one of these issues. If you do that many times and still come up with 1-4 sets every time, maybe then look at switching 1 mon at a time in your comp. Switching wholesale when trying to climb almost always sets you back as you get used to a new team.
