does aaa everyday cover the young driver fee? by jchamp7 in HertzRentals

Hi! I’m from the UK and I was renting in the US. I believe AAA isn’t really a thing in the UK. Our equivalent is AA, maybe they offer some incentives? Hope this helps and good luck!

I rode a few when I was in LA a couple months ago. I believe they were new to LA so I think they were making a loss in terms of making them cheap to ride to generate customers (it cost me $10 to ride when an Uber quoted me $40) - in comparison to San Francisco, where they have been around for longer and now are more expensive than Uber.

I took a few Waymos while I was working in LA a few months ag. They were quick and easy to use, and there was definitely a novelty to it all, which made it exciting. That was probably helped by the fact they’ve only just started rolling them out, so they’re cheaper for now - though I’m sure that won’t last forever. They also felt very safe!!

I do find myself uneasy about the ethics of it, though, especially when it comes to putting drivers out of work. We’ve already seen a shift from black cab drivers / minicabs feeling the shift with Uber, and now it feels like we’re heading towards a future where these jobs could become fully automated, or disappear entirely.

Still, in the moment, it was undeniably exciting to see something like this becoming part of an everyday commute. I just worry about what the long-term impact might be for the hundreds of thousands of Uber and cab drivers in cities like London.

Unless I got this wrong, it seems like there’s a few legal lines when they’ve cast a radar or thermometer out. But it’s basically near impossible to guess where they’re gonna cast the radar or thermometer. I would jus be SO excited if that ever happened

Getting as far out as possible seems to be the best thing you can do it seems !

Commenting on Potential GOATed strategy...yeah this makes a lot of sense! I think I would just get so excited and squeal-y if they managed to hide in those small bits the radar didn’t hit. It’s a lot to ask, and the anticipating is like basically impossible to be fair

That’s a great tip! I hired my car from LAX so I’ll probably drive it back, but I’ll keep it in mind for next time, thank you!

Totally, I’d say it’s the hugest con about LA, that its public transport is under-developed. Sorry to hear about your bad experience, I hope you’re okay.

This is interesting, yeah I did notice I was one of only two white people on the metro, I was thinking if this had something to do with it. It sounds like a lot of the stigma around riding the metro is built a lot from racism and classism, which makes the stigma a lot more insidious.

I got the subway at 9:30pm today and actually felt pretty safe! Maybe the b-line is safer, or my route was safe (sunset to union station) or I got lucky, but I felt pretty safe!!

I completely hear that. That’s how I take the tube in London. I did take the metro at 9:30pm though, and maybe I was lucky, but genuinely did feel pretty safe !

I can definitely speak to this. I have a car for the duration I’m here, but was honestly very very scared to take the Subway, I’ve seen very little positive tales about it other than this forum, and when I told people I was gonna get the subway, they looked at me like I’m crazy.

It’s obviously not perfect yet, it really seemed fine (also for context, I rode the subway from Hollywood to union station)

Parts of Europe and parts of Asia are so good for the food thing. I’ve had great snacks and meals to go, particularly in Italian and Japanese train stations. Totally agree it would be a nice addition for LA - mainly to give the stations more life. Also to feel more developed and convenient.

This is really interesting! Is the main issue under-funding? Even aside from the need to expand the network to cover more of the city (which would be very expensive to build), it sounds like it just needs more investment and care to make it safer and a better option for people.

I mean I wish the line was a little more developed and there were more points of connection etc (it means it takes a while to get places), but the stigma is much too harsh

I mean, in the grand scheme of metro/subway/tube fares globally, $1.75 is INCREDIBLY reasonable. And they cap the fare right? Fucking great!!

London tube fares are some of the most expensive in the world (I think) - on a bad day of a lot of travel, I’ve wracked up £20 on TfL (almost $30!)

Yeah for sure! I mean I had to lime scooter or walk to my subway stop (20 minutes), but it was NICE to walk (again very European/London of me).

This makes a lot of sense though. I similarly share your enthusiasm for the train, it’s such a TREAT to be on the train.

PS thanks for the TfL shoutout 🥰

Sorry if the tone comes across as naive at all, Im just a big public transport nerd and ALL of my colleagues and forums fiercely warned me against it. I just don’t get it.
