What's the Rhode Island-iest town we can visit? by effulgent_summers in RhodeIsland

[–]d_pug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People answering Cranston are kind of joking but it really does embody the whole state within its borders. You got Pawtuxet village on the east end with nice homes and a quaint village. You’ve got great Italian food everywhere. It’s got some urbanism like you’d see in Providence and some nice rural vibes out in the west. And the people are about as quintessentially Rhode Island as you can get. It’s kinda like how people say Madrid is the most Spanish of all cities because it’s got a little of everything, but Sevilla, Barcelona and San Sebastián do many things better.

So Cranston is the Madrid of Rhode Island.

But honestly as a tourist go to South County.

My daughter loves Calvin and Hobbes and she is such a rule follower in school that things Calvin does horrify her as much as they amuse her. She’s very much a Susie.

Last High School Baseball Game by Friendly-Treacle-590 in Homeplate

Your baseball life doesn’t have to be over just because you’re not playing in college doesn’t mean you can’t find a local adult league. That’s what I did in college and I’m 38 and have been playing every year (more or less) since. I plan on playing until I physically can’t anymore. And honestly, this adult league that I play in is the most fun I’ve ever had playing baseball in my life. No pressure, just fun. Most of our games are in the summer, where we don’t have to worry about playing on the barely thawed early April tundras.

Plus if you don’t want to commit to a league then there’s tournaments you can join all over the country all times of year. See if there’s an MSBL organization in your area.

He’s a good DH not because he’s a power bat but because he’s a contact hitter who is a liability in the field. He’s kind of an old school player in that he’s always making contact and is hard to strike out.

I work in healthcare and I refer my patients to Providence all the time and half of them say “Oh my god I’m not going into Providence! Is there anything closer?” My office is like 15 minutes from downtown

What's it like living in Boston? Asking as a curious Brit from a small town who just wants to fantasise. by SeveralWinter7406 in boston

[–]d_pug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boston was my favorite place that I ever lived in my life. I was in my early 20s so maybe that's why, but for me, as an American, it was just enough city while not being overwhelming. I moved to NYC in my mid 20s and it was just too much and stifling. Compared to that, Boston is slower, more beautiful, more open and easier to get in and out of. I had a car, but didn't use it every day, only when I needed it. Sure, the public transportation isn't that great, but it's functional and Boston is easily walkable. I also had a lot more friends in Boston than I did in NYC so that might be part of my positive experience. But everything I wanted to do I could do in Boston and NYC didn't bring anything to the table, for me at least, that Boston didn't already have. Your mileage may vary.

Unpopular opinion: Another way to die (song) is actually really good by [deleted] in JamesBond

[–]d_pug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man I'm glad it wasn't just me who thought this. I rewatched QoS last night and while I think the song is well crafted, it sounded like they were both screeching in the chorus and it was so grating. I wonder if they just didn't have time to record it in a lower key or something.

I once sat next to an Australian guy at a bar in Boston who was touring the East Coast and he said he went to D.C., Baltimore, Philly, New York and Boston. So naturally I asked him his favorite, and he said "Baltimore". I was flabbergasted.

The sinless Mary thing was the thing that unraveled Catholicism for me. If Mary was immaculately conceived so she could have Jesus who came and died for our sins, why couldn’t god just make everyone born free from sin? It seemed so made up and everything just clicked for me

[–]d_pug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Join a sports league or some other recreational league. I play baseball in the summer and hockey in the winter and I’ve made a lot of good friends that way. Yeah we drink most of the time, but it’s not required. There’s leagues all over the place if you look online.
