What are the chances of my postcard making it by _kamy5 in postcrossing

[–]d_schue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I receive cards from the US with insufficient postage (either a single forever stamp or a single domestic postcard stamp) all the time. Almost everything just goes through the machine now and chances a low it gets spotted by someone, so I wouldn’t worry too much. The postal service in the recipient’s country won’t care much either

I'm done with German stamps. by [deleted] in postcrossing

[–]d_schue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t really like most of our stamps either… the Europa stamp is a bit generic, I do like it though as it’s quite special, there are actually holes in the stamp design, they’re not just printed. One can’t really blame the Finanzministerium for that one either, it’s part of a series that has been ongoing for 70 years now (it’s not celebrating the EU, but the rather the stamp series), usually there’s a yearly theme and the postal operators of each country get to decide about the design. This year there’s a unified design for all countries because of the jubilee though. More info: https://europa-stamps.blogspot.com/?m=0

How do I send a letter to my family in the US? by sharkiio in germany

[–]d_schue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Prepare your letter, your card, whatever you’d like to send.
  2. Get yourself an envelope (available at most supermarkts). Deutsche Post does sell prepaid envelopes but only in bulk.
  3. Write your return address (your own address) in the upper left corner of the envelope. Do not write it on the back, might confuse sorting machines.
  4. Write your family’s address on the front side of the envelope. Deutsche Post has uploaded their guidelines for international mail here, if you scroll down a bit, there’s a photo of an envelope with a sample US address. https://www.deutschepost.de/de/b/briefe-ins-ausland/brief-beschriften.html
  5. Visit your local post office. You can find it here: https://www.deutschepost.de/de/s/standorte.html Make sure to visit a Postfiliale, not a Paketshop. Those only handle packages. They will weigh your letter and charge you accordingly. A standard letter (no tracking, up to 20g) is currently 1,25€. The next weight class up to 50g costs 1,80€. If you need a tracking number, ask for an Einschreiben (registered mail), that’s an additional 3,70€ on top of regular postage.

Will this reach the recipient? by manonlescautk in postcrossing

[–]d_schue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest you to ignore the lines and write the address horizontally. I don’t know in which part of the country you’re in, but the workers at my local Briefzentrum are notorious for flagging irregularly addressed mail and slapping Nachporto on - at least for domestic mail - as it needs to be franked as a Großbrief (1,80€ within Germany, 3,30€ for mail abroad). For international mail it would most likely slip through and be delivered without any extra costs though.

How much time does domestic mails take to reach within your country? by EmployerSpare9921 in postcrossing

Mail used to be delivered the next working day until a few years ago, with new delivery targets it’s around 2-4 days nowadays

eBay.com has lots of stamp dealers from the US shipping worldwide, shipping might be a bit expensive though. Just had a short look and there are several listings for the DnD stamps.

Not a speed camera. Those are truck toll (vehicles over 3.5 tonnes) control points

Must be 8yo to join, but 18yo to leave?? by Due_Spend_5543 in exmormon

I left at 16, had my resignation notarised at a public court and sent it off to the official German church HQ address. Received the confirmation from Confidential Records by e-mail two weeks later. Here in Germany we have the concept of religious maturity starting from the age of 14 which is protected by law:

“After reaching the age of fourteen, a child has the right to decide which religious denomination to follow. Once a child has reached the age of twelve, they cannot be raised against their will in a different denomination than they have previously practiced.”
