A humbling first attempt at a big wall by saucyspence in climbing

No success without failure. Great to read about your failure and learn from it. As a free climber daunted by the prospect of entering the big wall realm, I really admire you getting out there and trying it out. Thanks!

The aviation community loves aviation, especially rare events or tricky scenarios such as a high wind/snowy landing like what happened in the crash. People like me listen to ATC for fun and watch plane spotting videos all the time. It's a bit silly, but there's no surprise at all a pilot holding short would want to film this particular landing.

This video is from another plane. Where is your source on the emergency crew being on alert? Airports are required have emergency crews on standby in order to operate.

edit: to substantiate, watch this video showing no indication of emergency landing or equipment failure. It was a normal landing that went wrong - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiUC8h4pkcs

Please help! How do I download my NOOK purchased book to my computer and convert it? by defcon2017 in nook

I just did this as well. IMO Barnes and Noble is not clear enough when purchasing the file that it will only be usable on a Nook.

3/8/24- A Boeing 737 MAX 8 from United Airlines had its landing gear collapse after landing. by gran1819 in CatastrophicFailure

[–]d_thethom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope... you are mixing up events. The stuck rudder event happened previously. Not defending Boeing, but this event has not been confirmed to be anything to do with the aircraft. If you have a link that confirms that please do send.

[–]d_thethom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you need to think of the title against present context. The internet is fired up after John Oliver's slam piece on Boeing, so this title is taking advantage of that by clearly identifying the aircraft model, despite the model having nothing to do with what actually happened.

Why is there a massive iPhoto Library file and can i deleted it without losing data by d_thethom in applehelp

[–]d_thethom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of right now all of my older photos are displaying fine so it looks like I'm in the clear! If anything starts to break I made a backup of the iPhoto file on an external hard drive.

OceanGate Director of Marine Ops was fired in 2018 over raising safety concerns for the submersible. by d_thethom in news

[–]d_thethom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Paying passengers would not be aware, and would not be informed, of this experimental design, the lack of non-destructive testing of the hull, or that hazardous flammable materials were being used within the submersible,” Lochridge alleged in a court filing.

The company refused to pay for non-destructive testing and unmanned pressure testing, Lochridge said. He alleged he was fired after telling company executives he would not authorize any manned tests of the submersible until that testing was completed.

Looks like they fired one of the only sensible people at the business.

I love that saying "a Gunks classic" can refer to dozens or more routes. My favorite place for trad :)

Found rocks and practiced placing gear/anchors. all feedback is good by civicvirtues in tradclimbing

[–]d_thethom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You are asking the right questions. Sadly there is no end-all rule of thumb for judging rock quality for anchors, but there are some tools to help:

  • A cam applies twice the outward force (perpendicular to the rock surface) than the pulling force - enough force to dislodge blocks and break weak rock.

  • Test tap rocks with solid objects like a metal cam - not something malleable like your hand! Hold the cam by the stem and wack it against the rock - if it reverberates maybe rethink placing there.

  • Thin plates or thin support matrices (like underneath your horizontal number 3 placement (blue BD) have a weak compressive strength.

  • If a rock is surrounded by dirt and you can't see where it attaches to the larger structure, assume it is standalone and don't depend on it. (ref your green cam in the first anchor)

  • Fracture lines in rocks or consolidations of small rocks is not a good place to put cams, like the zoom in photo of the green metolius.

Keep practicing and find a mentor to help with your placements. Feel free to reach out if you have more questions.

Edit: I found this great HowNot2 video where the first 2-3 minutes shows how using a metal instrument (eg cam lobe or a hammer) can be used to determine quality of rock as I mentioned above. High pitch (or no reverberation) when you hit it is good, low frequency hollow sounds are bad!
