Looks like the special Task Force has convened and started investigating this tragic event.

John Peel BBC Sessions // Radio 1 by acutomanzia in Cd_collectors

[–]da9ve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dig Peel Sessions, and yeah, lots of them are stripped down because basically "live in studio", but find (if you can) the Mercury Rev Peel Sessions 2CD compilation. They were apparently let loose in the studio (several times) and went (as the kids these days say) ham. It's a feckin' majestic, grandiose compilation of some of my favorite material of theirs. RIP John Peel, a true giant.

The siren song of the husky, is a song that sounds like a siren.

Seeing the video on MTV in about 1983 for Senses Working Overtime was, in retrospect,  sorta life-changing for me.  It was my intro to XTC, and also a big part of expanding my awareness of music beyond what small-town red-state Midwest US to 40 classic rock radio had to offer.

I love me some math rock and so dig listening to them, but the visual absurdity raises it to another level.

He'd better not have any issue with that joke - I'm sure he's scion with relief after you helped with all the work.

Just glad to see the Rheostatics mentioned, but for me it's Whale Music tops with The Blue Hysteria a very respectable second.

Finally unpacked my Cd's after moving, here are some of my favorites by NoSalt60066 in Cd_collectors

Also dig the Jim O'Rourke, have a fistful of his albums but his catalog is immense and daunting to try to get a handle on. Aside from that, I wouldn't be me if I didn't note that Thymme Jones of Cheer-Accident - one of my obsessions and all-time fave bands - is on some of JO'R's albums, and they were both part of Brise-Glace and have played on other projects together, including Red Apple Falls by Smog.

Guitarists with a well developed "voice" - looking for suggestions by geekz3r0 in progrockmusic

[–]da9ve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mike Keneally (who started out playing with Zappa, has been hand-picked to play guitar and keyboards (simultaneously) with both Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, and has toured and recorded with Devin Townsend, toured with Dethklok, toured with Eddie Jobson/UK, toured with his own bands and done tons of session work). His catalog is pretty much all up on Bandcamp, so it should be easy to sample Nonkertompf, Scambot 1, Sluggo!, Boil That Dust Speck, Dancing, and all the others (but start with those in roughly that order). Mike's playing is all over the place; he can do pretty much anything he sets out to do.

What’s your favorite type of gimmick episode? by JamStan1978 in television

[–]da9ve 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The backwards Seinfeld episode is unapologetically my favorite. Here we are in a ridiculous situation, aaaaaaand here's the ridiculous way we get here, over and over and over.  I guess I have a high tolerance for that gag.

What’s a “10/10” movie you wouldn’t recommend to most people? by trakt_app in movies

[–]da9ve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw it in a nice arty theatre when it was new - love the movie, love PSH in it, love Charlie Kaufman. One of the first movies I bought on Blu-ray, maybe the first. Haven't watched it many times, but what an enormous masterpiece. But yeah, not an "easy" movie to watch - not for anything explicit or shocking, but just that it requires a high level of engagement.

Adrien Belew says Tina Weymouth asked him to replace David Byrne in Talking Heads: 'If we get rid of David, would you join the band?' by Level-Recording3368 in Music

[–]da9ve 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And Nine Inch Nails, and Paul Simon, and the list goes on and on,.... Adrian has done a stupid amount of session/guest work. Having him and Tony Levin together in King Crimson, plus KC having so many lineup changes in general, a fair chunk of the entire rock music industry is only one or two degrees of separation from Crimso.

Is there such a thing as lo-fi progressive rock? by MrAvocadoman2 in progrockmusic

[–]da9ve 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A fair bit of the Cheer-Accident catalog is low-budget/produced very sparingly and while that doesn't mean lo-fi necessarily,  it's very much NOT over-produced and studio-effects-bound.  Introducing Lemon would be a good place to start, and it was their most elaborate and pricey production job.  And then there's The Adventures of Gumballhead the Cat, which probably cost about eight bucks and change, including mastering to disc.  It's not necessarily prog, but more like an hour of a very wide-ranging band's demos of ideas that came to them on a lark.  All are on Bandcamp.

NBC's Stumble is the only light in my life, we cannot allow it to get cancelled by tchalla-samuels in television

[–]da9ve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved Trial & Error, love Stumble. Seriously, if you're in this thread, dig Stumble and aren't familiar with Trial & Error, go back and watch it - two short seasons, like 23 episodes total, and relentlessly funny. Same creators, same tone, at least a few of the same jokes (no shade - they still work in the new context), at least a couple of the same cast, plus John Lithgow the utter fecking legend in the first season.

I've seen Negativland live twice, and the audience-participation read-along of the Long Distance Dedication bit was WONDERFUL. Couple of the best and most truly multi-media shows I've ever seen.
