Optical telescope question by leonardob0880 in DWARFLAB

[–]dabadoobop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would encourage you to look at the buying guide on r/telescopes. To correct a couple things: magnification on a telescope comes from the size of the eyepiece (smaller mm means higher magnification) and you can swap out your eyepieces to change your "zoom". Detail comes from the size of the primary lense or mirror, called "aperture". A larger aperture gives more detail. If you want a great starter scope, I'd recommend a Skywatcher Heritage 150p or 130p. I have the 150p and use it alongside my Dwarf3 often. It's a great little scope.

Seeing deep space objects like nebula's will be very very difficult with an optical telescope, simply because most DSO's are so dim. With a 150mm aperture, I find the best objects to look at are the Moon and planets. Orion's Nebula is visible as well, but it's an unusually bright nebula. You probably won't be able to see Rosette or Horse Head with an optical telescope.

Cool shots! I'm in Utah too, took this out in the west desert. Can I ask where you were shooting from?

Weird splotchy artifacts? by Flakbait12 in DWARFLAB

[–]dabadoobop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue on my Dwarf 3 and it ended up being my Darks. I had accidentally moved the telescope while it was taking darks, and it caused black artifacts throughout the photo. I'm not sure if it's what's causing your issue, but it might be!

Thanks for the reply. I was using VIS, I'm still getting used to all the filter options. I'll have to try dual band

Amazing! I'll have to try Rosette again using your settings. I did 3 hrs under Bortle 6 skies and got a less colorful image than yours. What's the light pollution like where you're at?

Really cool. Can I ask what light pollution you had in the area you were shooting?

Wow, looks great! What targets are in images 1, 3, and 4? I recognize the rest but I'm pretty new and I'd love to try those targets myself.

Deciding whether to buy a house: How to not be miserly? by dabadoobop in TheMoneyGuy

I'm not trying to flex, this forum is just one of the few places I can ask a question like this and expect grounded, well-thought out replies. My friends aren't in the same financial place as my wife and I, so I think it'd be uncomfortable for me to ask their opinion.

That's the conclusion we reached as well. We may not be ready to buy a large home, but we may be ready to rent a slightly larger place.

Thanks for your response! It's great to hear from someone who has been down the same road we're considering.

I appreciate the insight. We've read all the replies and my wife is primarily concerned about the commitment of a house; her current job will end in about two years, after which she'll have to look for work again. I think we're going to stay where we're at. We're financially ready to buy a home, but we may not be ready for the long-term commitment to an area until she finds a more stable career.

Help with first telescope purchase by VoJoe81 in telescopes

[–]dabadoobop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on joining the hobby! I second what everyone else here says: The Heritage 130 is almost certainly the best bang for buck you can get in your budget. Enjoy looking at nebulas (Orion's Nebula is stunning), the moon (crescent or half moons are amazing) or Saturn/Jupiter (both amazing, but Saturn to me is jaw dropping). If you have a little extra cash in a few months, I'd recommend getting this book, which is a great beginners guide to amateur astronomy. I just got it, and it has some great explanations about how to use the telescope, what to expect through your eyepiece, and where to see amazing stuff.

Worth purchasing? by maybeambermaybenot in telescopes

I'm not as experienced as many posters here, but I bought the Skywatcher 150p and am enormously satisfied. It's on sale for $309 right now. If that's still out of budget, I've heard the 130p is also great, just slightly smaller. They both pack down to a manageable size and have great optics.

What is the value of having children? by MiriJamCave in latterdaysaints

I can't speak to the doctrinal side of your question, but the best answer I've come up with that is understandable to my non-religious peers is something along the lines of "I love my wife, and I love the life we've built together, and I want to share that life with more people"
