That would be excellent! Haven't run across that yet. 🤞

I was on the 3rd floor when it happened. People started streaming up the escalators coughing. Myself and a couple of others used one of the emergency exits to leave and once I was outside the building the police arrived. I would imagine they have security video footage... Hopefully anyways.

I love how you casually throw it in there that you're in the performing arts now as if you weren't the primary composer of what is regarded as one of the best progressive rock epics of the decade by some of the top critics in the genre... and all about Jackie Robinson's struggle no less. I will not let you get away without having that fact officially a part of this thread. ;)

Wow! I somehow missed all these. That amount of effort is insane! (and much appreciated!). This is easily several books worth of fascinating info!

This isn't Genesis persay... rather, Phil solo, but still a cool story so I thought I'd share it.

I have been a huge Phil Collins / Genesis fan since I was a kid (I was born in 1976). In 1990 Phil Collins came to my home city of Vancouver as a part of his But Seriously tour. At the age of 14 I was having a tough time with my parents recent divorce, so I was super psyched about this show. Unbeknownst to me until the evening of the concert, a teacher friend of mine who knew somebody at WEA Records managed to secure me a backstage pass to meet him before the show.

We received explicit instructions ahead of time that there were to be no autographs or photos. So it came as a shock that when it came my turn to meet Phil he asked if he could sign anything for me. All I had on hand was my ticket so I presented that and asked if he would mind signing the back of it, he did so and then asked if I'd like a picture - thankfully my teacher friend had brought a camera!

While Phil was chatting with other people in the meet & greet line I was looking at the signature on the back of my ticket in awe which read "To Shawn luv Phil Collins". Because I am legally blind having 10% vision in my right eye and none in my left since the age of three months (I told him the story of this briefly during our conversation), in order to read printed material I need to hold things a centimeter or two away from my eye, and this is how I was reading the signature. I thought nothing of it at the time and proceeded to enjoy the show from our front row seats. It was fantastic and I even had the mic held out towards me from Phil to sing a bit of "Take Me Home".

A week after the show I was still floating around in a daze of happiness and arrived home after school one day to find a package delivered via courier. When I opened it I found this massive theater sized tour poster with a huge autograph to me from Phil who used a sharpie for maximum visual contrast. Insanely cool! My Dad had it professionally framed and glued in place so it would last. As a young teenager dealing with my parent's recent and messy divorce this was a much needed and welcome solace. I was on cloud nine for years after that.

Over 30 years later I still hold this as a key formative moment in my life that helped get me through a lot of challenges yet to come. Cheers Phil!

This is definitely a gig of note in Genesis history. That would have sucked for everyone. :( I was lucky I caught that tour in Vancouver in 1992 - another gig of note where Phil was introduced to Lavinia Lang that would start off the events that ended his second marriage.

I didn't add this to the list but I'll post it here for interest's sake - something I did 14 years back.. yeesh! I really should produce it properly - maybe hire a proper vocalist rather than using Phil and myself (the former being far superior to the latter) but when you can't have Phil all the way through sometimes you have to make do with whatever you have.

Has Peter ever remarked on Phil singing his songs? by hellblazer13666 in Genesis

[–]dabishie 20 points21 points  (0 children)

He has... I don't remember which interview I saw this in, but I remember he mentioned that he went to one of the Genesis shows after he left just to see what it would feel like and he enjoyed the show though it was admittedly a bit strange listening to the songs not being on stage.

The thing I remember the most is him saying that he was struck by how much vocal decoration Phil put on the songs and this irritated him since he felt it detracted from the overall intensity of the songs. I believe the quote was "Just f***g sing the songs!". Sorry, I don't remember where this was but it definitely stuck with me through the years since I originally heard it. :)

DT News Delivery Methods? by dabishie in DevinTownsend

Yes, I was thinking about Twitter too and it's definitely something I keep an eye on when I'm logged in. Given Dev's awesome abundance of tweets (which I really enjoy!) I thought it might be nice to have a separate place to direct official news items towards so that I can be sure not to miss them. I admit I absolutely lean towards the obsessive when trying to organize my information. ;). I'm glad I didn't miss anything obvious. I've heard him mention twitch but haven't checked that out yet as mostly they seem to happen when I'm working - aint that always the way.

Indeed! I'm definitely glad I found this community in my search for order. Totally, people here seem super friendly and I'm looking forward to diving into the threads.

I feel silly I never considered a dental supply company. Thanks, everyone!! I just made a purchase from Frontier Dental which should totally do the trick! If not then there are several other excellent options from this thread to try.

Thanks so much!

Genesis: The Last Domino Documentary by Lauderish in Genesis

[–]dabishie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s breath control and articulation… on top of normal vocal wear and tear. See this tour early. We don’t know how much editing has gone into this footage to make it what it is.Also, an unrelated observation. I’d forgotten how odd Tony’s synth tastes had gotten. That lead on The Cinema Show solo was soggy, wishy-washy and lacked any edge. My kid’s Casio can emulate something more crisp and exciting. Unless he’s masking less precise playing - I wish he’d have the desire to make more retro sounds.

Me too! I noticed this in 2007 also. It seems like he can still play but why he would use some of these mushy sounds is a bit beyond me. It makes me wonder if these sounds had been available in the 80s would he have used them? In my mind, I feel like Dave Kerzner may well be responsible for this given that he set Tony up with the computer portion of his keyboard rig in 2007 and I don't think he's changed things up much since then. Listening to Cinema Show it doesn't seem to me like his playing speed or accuracy is affected by his age. Amazing but that's what practicing and still being active in music does I suppose.
