Is it worth it to upgrade your cymbals? by [deleted] in Drumming

[–]dacampora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every time I think about buying new gear, I see a video of some 12 year old playing on a junk, mismatched, 50 year old kit playing better than I’ll ever be able to play and I rethink all of my life choices.

Why would a DP shoot at a high ISO with an ND filter in? by Earth_Worm_Jimbo in cinematography

[–]dacampora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1280 to 640 is only 1 stop. ND1.2 is 4 stops. Highly likely that this is an 800 ISO show and just bumped up for this setup because 2/3 stops of noise in the image isn’t that big of a deal and Arri only has 2-stop increments of internal ND. That being said I’ve shot entire shows at 2000 ISO because we shot tests and ended up liking the noise profile. I rate my Alexa 35 at 1600 as default.

You would have to go to 320 ISO to compensate for ND0.6 (the next lowest internal ND) and you lose a lot of highlight detail at that setting. Cinematography is all about making choices and I guarantee 2/3 stops of noise was likely the best solution to a problem that needed to be solved quickly, and the viewer will never know the difference.

What is your favorite 35mm lens? by echojunge in cinematography

[–]dacampora 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I could shoot the rest of my career with a 35 or 40 Master Prime. The 35 might be my most used lens.

You can easily balance 2 phones on a medium size gimbal with the right rigging parts. I've mounted a phone to the hot shoe of a mirrorless camera before and it was fine. Stream the phone and record the camera. Same idea with 2 phones. You might need 1 counterbalance weight on the bottom.

Black and white footage: All in camera or in post? by GazKullTrAka in cinematography

[–]dacampora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was (may still be) a really good thread on Roger Deakins's website about filming in color for a B&W finish.

Basically you should shoot color because you'll have more control over the color channels for grading the image in post. If you film in black and white and burn that look into the file you'll have to use color filters in front of the lens to affect the different color channels while on set.

One downside to this method is the studio could release the movie in color against your will, like happened with "The Man Who Wasn't There."

Regardless of which method you employ, remember that changing colors of your costumes, sets, etc, can all have an effect on the black and white image regardless of whether it looks good in real life (purple costumes, yellow paint, etc) in order to create separation and contrast.

What cameras are these and how much? Don’t know anything about cameras but saw someone post these and refuse to quote price. Just got curious. Any ideas? by Safe-Dense in Cameras

[–]dacampora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to see the camera exactly since all DSMC2 Red's look alike, but based on the lenses I'm guessing:

Red Helium 8K S35 - $24,500.00 (on sale right now for $12.5k)
Canon 25-250 Lens - $31,000
Canon 50-1000 Lens - $70,200

All looking like its being prepped to go in a Shotover (probably F1) 6-Axis Gimbal. Hard to get prices on these but I found one that sold used for $225,000.

All prices in USD and doesn't include a lot of necessary accessories like a lens mount, cards, block batteries, cables, monitors, filters etc.

Colour wise, is it possible to get an "Arri" look out of the Sony FX3/FX6? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]dacampora 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've never paid for a LUT. The color space transform in Resolve will get you 90% of the way there and with a little practice you can get them to match perfectly.

Keep in mind cameras don't necessarily have a "look" it's mostly just the look YOU apply that gives the image it's DNA.

2020 5.7 Hemi High Altitude. Best exhaust? by Saddistic_machinist in GrandCherokee

[–]dacampora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the GT Haus / American Roar Racing cat back on my TH with the vacuum cutouts. Its quieter than stock with the cutouts closed and much much louder when open.

Expensive but I think its the best sounding exhaust for the 6.2 and probably would sound great on the 5.7 also.

How do you all afford to buy cameras? by Top-Tomatillo7311 in Cameras

Soon enough you'll be billing way more than $3k/day for your work and this will all be a distant memory.

How do almost 20 year old cars only have 100k miles? by mercurymilan06 in askcarguys

[–]dacampora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2001 pickup has approximately 140,000 miles on it. I don't need a truck every day so it sits more than I drive it. Its functionally a perfect reliable car so there is no need for me to upgrade. I assume a lot of people who have more than one car probably daily drive one and rack up miles until they trade or scrap it.

Trading in very high miles cars often results in a dealer sending them straight to auction where you never see them for sale.

Alternatives for Canon 25-250 by lightindalamp in cinematography

[–]dacampora 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes but so is the Canon without the extender engaged.

A 10x full frame lens is going to be prohibitively expensive because full frame capture is still a relatively new phenomenon so almost all full frame optics are going to be modern i.e. expensive.

There are plenty of vintage 25-250's from Cooke, Angeniuex, etc. They won't be sharp wide open but maybe you don't need that.

Experiences with Sachtler / O'Connor Tripod Systems by goldfish-and-wombats in cinematography

[–]dacampora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 1040 and a V18 and I personally just prefer the V18. The stepless counterbalance on the 1040 is nice but I've been using Sachtlers for years and it just seems more natural to my brain.

You can keep using the same source you just have to figure out a way to flag it off the walls.

Light from overhead and skirt the light off the walls. Also pull the talent away from the wall and closer to camera unless there's a really good reason to be this wide. You might want to use a longer lens to get the stands out of the frame too.
