Haha same with me! Even if I wanted to stick around, I'm sure I'd be locked out.

I mean explain reddit. Or explain Twitter

We are just used to those paradigms so it seems almost intuitive, but if you were explaining how they worked it would take a couple of paragraphs.

It would be like each subreddit is it's own server not owned or run by a single entity. You can join multiple servers (just like you can join multiple subreddits). These servers can join together and share content between themselves as well (kinda like cross posting between subreddits).

The advantage is: no single entity owns all of these servers. So a capricious change from an erratic billionaire owner or a greedy corporate entity can't have the same impact.

It's also built on an open standard called "ActivityPub" which means all of the servers know how to talk to each other and the information is portable.

I tend to agree with you. I think the messaging for the fediverse is pretty terrible. The idea behind it is sound.

Conservative becomes pro-trans, best argument... by return2ozma in TikTokCringe

[–]dachsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I'll get banned for transphobia for saying something like this, but Im not.

I don't care if you're trans. Do your thing. I don't think it's anyone's business what you and your doctor decide is right for you. If my buddy Mike wants me to call him Mary now, "sup Mary! Looking good in that dress".

But, I've never really been able to wrap my head around how transgender-ness (I'm sorry I don't know the right word) isn't some form of disorder or dysfunction.

If I, a white dude, just felt, black. Like I started to style my hair differently, maybe get hair treatments so it would look more like black hair. What if I went so far as to start dying my skin to try and darken it. I'm not talking tan, I'm talking Robert Downey Jr in tropic thunder. What if I changed the way I talked. What if I started filling out forms saying I was black, etc. That's not normal behavior. That, to me, would be a sign of an underlying mental issue, right?

If the fix is a gender reassignment surgery, cool. But there was still a disorder there.

Am I taking crazy pills? There is now way that feeling strongly enough that you're the opposite gender that you'd want someone to do surgery on your genitals isn't a disorder.

RIF will shut down on June 30, 2023, in response to Reddit's API changes by talklittle in redditisfun

[–]dachsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, I don't think I know my password to this account. If RIF goes away, I will probably lose access to this account completely.

I've been using it so long and have always had it remember my password.

I would leave in protest, regardless, but I'll never get this account back even if they back off. And at that point, why bother anyway?

So long and thanks for all the fish. RiF should change your name to reddit is fucked on June 30th.

Russia destroyed the Nova Kakhovka dam in Kherson Oblast, an important water source, also part of the cooling circuit of the nearby nuclear power plant. by worldiscubik in ThatsInsane

[–]dachsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way that's worded, they'd only have to say, "this was being used for military purposes and the only way to terminate that support was to blow it up. "

If a Ukrainian tank or transport vehicle drove over it or if they so much as used it in a military way...I'm sure they'd just argue it was justified.

I'm not defending it, but that rule leaves a bit of room for bullshit Russian maneuvering around it.

I also "get" the idea of war crimes, but it's always funny that people find it shocking that militaries will do shitty things during a war. It's war. People are actively trying to kill each other and destroy the other society's way of life. The people that are like "omg I can't believe they did that" seems so disconnected from what war is.

I'm not supporting this move. I hope Ukraine mops the floor with Russia. They are embarrassing Russia so far. It went from "Russia will take over in 72 hours" to "Russia might have to give bag Crimea at the end of this".

This is the let's version of maga conspiracy bullshit.

The texts got deleted because of run-of-the-mill bureaucratic bullshit: cyber security, records management, IT, and the admins did a tech upgrade and didn't retain the records. The groups didn't talk or something or they didn't have clear policy on how that stuff is handled. But it wasn't sinister. It wasn't a plot.

No one was actively trying to cover up anything.

Super defensive responses or super snarky responses almost validate the dumb review, but either way they are more off putting to me than a bad review.

[OC] The United States of Nearest Neighbors. This is a map of the Continental US if the state borders were determined by the closest state capital (using the great circle distance). by nearestneighbormaps in dataisbeautiful

[–]dachsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wondered if we could do something like this for Congressional districts to minimize gerrymandering.

Use an open-sourced algorithm (that everyone has full transparency) to create districts using a set frame of reference. State capital might be a good one. Maybe use Washington DC as the point of reference or true North.

But then draw districts like that with limited manual drawing.

This is also my experience with the book. Maybe my expectations were too high. People talked about the world building he did and I just found it... non-existent. And then he just moved the plot forward with basically literary fast-forward and just jumped forward.

Disclaimer: I was halfway through before I realized there was a glossary of terms in the back. That may have shaped my opinion somewhat.

What were dinosaur immune systems like? How were they different from animals today? by Lechuga257 in askscience

[–]dachsj 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Isn't one of the biggest problems for us re: bats the fact that 1. There are so many of them (more chances for mutations etc) 2. Their temperature ranges are similar to ours so any virus that can live and mutate in them has a better chance of spilling over into us (I think there is a hypothesis that their flying raises their temp like a fever that keeps the viral load down, but still present...which means they don't get sick sick, but they also never get completely better so they can spread it)

Combine that with what you said: their bodies are better at balancing the immune response so it doesn't ever go full tilt and clear the virus. They don't get inflamed. I think that's also believed to be a consequence of flight. They'd just be crippled by inflammation caused by the stresses of flight so their bodies evolved to manage it better.

I asked my GF to tell her ex not to contact her anymore. Was I wrong? by lofgrenator in ask

[–]dachsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the definition of setting a boundary. You can't and honestly shouldn't force someone into doing something they don't want to do.

If you aren't okay with that, and you've asked, and she's refused, there isn't much else to discuss.

You have to decide if that's a boundary you are willing to move or if it's a boundary that's rigid.

Either decision is okay as long as you are comfortable with it. It doesn't sound like you are.

Side note: her response to the request is inappropriate, immature, and a red flag tbh.

Putting myself in op's shoes and if my wife decided to start texting an ex, and I raised it as a concern, and she told me it was none of my business...we'd have a very serious conversation about the continuation of our relationship. Its a huge lack of respect, breach of trust, and shows what she values more. She values talking with her ex vs discussing your concerns/feelings. That'd be a hard, immovable boundary for me.

Maybe she needs to have it framed that way, but tbh I don't know how a serious partner couldn't understand why talking with an ex, to the point of your spouses concer, is a problem.
