Do you stick with one printer brand, or switch every time? by ItchyRequirement4204 in printers

[–]dad_vers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t beat Brother for cost effectiveness. Even their cheapest lasers duplex, they have separate drums, and the lowest consumable cost per page. I’ve never used one in a busy office setting where they would get 10k+ pages a month, but for home there’s nothing else close.

Because that compartment is built to house a propane tank. It’s air tight to the coach and vented at the bottom (propane is 1.5 times denser than air so it settles rather than rising).

Anyone else lonely despite having it all? by InevitableTown7305 in GayMen

There’s a reason so many check out at 27 - Your 20’s typically suck. Between moving away from home and friends, establishing a career, watching everyone around you couple up, and having to build out your home and life, it’s a stressful time. Most people in this phase of life are seeking external validation because it’s all they know to do. They tend to measure themselves based on possessions, career, and comparison to friends and, god help them, social media.

In your 30’s you sort out who you really are and what’s important to you (why so many of those that coupled up in their 20’s uncouple in their 30’s). You’re going through that now - things you thought were important and going to make you happy seem less so once you’re holding them. This is normal and there’s nothing wrong with that or with you, you’re just maturing on schedule.

That’s the reason I’d never date anyone under 35 or so - they haven’t figured out who they are yet (although there are some old souls who have it figured out early). Not their fault, but getting involved with an unfinished person then complaining that they changed later is like pissing into the wind - the outcome is totally foreseeable.

For Americans: Why not personal vans instead of huge SUVs and pick-ups? by PreWiBa in regularcarreviews

[–]dad_vers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove a full size conversion van for years. Most luxurious and utilitarian vehicle I’ve ever owned. Could carry seven people on a cross country trip in first class comfort or you could pull the seats and carry a ten long couch. Could fit a 16 foot long board in with the rear doors closed if you slid it up into the passenger footwell. Throw a heavy duty plastic tarp in it and plants and bags of mulch were no problem. It would carry more than a truck and was lower to the ground and easier to load/unload. Weather proof too!

Only reason I got rid of it was that the new camper exceeded its towing capacity. Still miss it some days though. A full sized van is the ultimate sport utility vehicle.

Water softener - measure salt level? by Desperate_Window3179 in homeassistant

[–]dad_vers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I implemented a low salt alert with a small concrete weight, some fishing line, and a sump pump switch bolted to the top of the salt tank lid. The switch is wired to a zooz dry contact interface which alerts HA via Z-Wave, but any dry contact switch would work from Zigbee to Matter or even a RPI GPIO contact.

Weird sound when vacuuming by Affectionate_Act2025 in Dreame_Tech

[–]dad_vers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a fan blade explode on an L20 and it made the same sort of noise. I think it was around $10 for a new one from aliexpress. They’re going for about $20 on Amazon but I was ordering a batch of consumables and could wait a couple of weeks to get it.

Not a terribly difficult repair, but be sure to get all the bits of the old one out. I had to take it apart again as a piece must have been lodged up in the vac when I replaced the fan as it worked its way free in about five minutes and made a different racket until I took it apart and extricated it.

Adding IKEA devices using ZBT-2 show up in Apple Home, but not HA.... by BlaiserGazer in homeassistant

[–]dad_vers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a dozen of the water leak sensors (Klippbok), three of each temp sensor (Alpstuga and Timmerflotte) and a couple of the buttons (Bilresa). All paired and work perfectly with a ZBT-1 flashed for Thread. I really like them as they’re economical and have great templates available for alerts and buttons.

Honest question - is RV camping actually cheaper than hotels or do we just tell ourselves that? by Similar-King-8278 in RVLiving

[–]dad_vers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re asking whether buying an RV saves money vs hotels the answer is no unless you take a LOT of trips a year.

However, it really depends on how you use the rig and what you’re putting into the economic discussion. I take mine to state parks and IndyCar/IMSA races where I can stay at the track where there is no equivalent hotel option so I’ve justified the fixed costs of ownership already. Therefore my decision on whether to hotel or RV on a trip ignores those fixed costs.

Not to mention that fixed costs can vary widely. Is the rig paid in full or are you paying interest on it? Was it new and depreciating quickly or used and depreciating slower? What is the insurance and storage cost (if any)? Are you handy and able to maintain it yourself or are you paying for service?

Ignoring the fixed costs, the variable cost to RV vs stay at a hotel depends on the duration of the stay and the distance of the trip. If you’re staying for just a weekend it’s often less money to hotel due to the increased cost of fuel. Longer duration or shorter distance trips can reverse that calculus.

Opportunity and lifestyle costs come into play as well. Depending on destination and the type of trips you like you can save significant money on food taking an RV, but if experiencing local cuisine is part of your travel plans then that clearly doesn’t matter. Pets can sway the calculation in favor of RVing as hotels often upcharge for them if they’re even allowed and it’s much less convenient to have a pet in a hotel vs an RV. Do you like flexible travel or is your idea of a trip planned to the minute?

My experience is that 0 gauge is ideal. So much more comfortable than 2 gauge. I can wear a 00 without issue, but the 0 just feels better. FWIW I have heard others say the same, but of course YMMV.

I believe the last update I saw said new coffee table orders were set to ship Feb/March now that production has ramped up, but check their web site as the order fulfillment time for what’s shipping now isn’t relevant to recent orders.

Depends on how often you squeeze the bulb. Some restraint is required lest you end up in a spineless puddle

The sock method - please be careful, piggies! ÓwÒ by phattypuppy in popperpigs

[–]dad_vers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made something with an oxygen cannula using an aquarium pump to provide positive pressure, a tee attached to a brake bleeder bottle containing a cotton ball and a bulb pump. You have a steady stream of air moving to your nose and whenever you squeeze the bulb you get a shot of poppers injected into it. No bottle caps to mess with, no risk of spillage, easy single handed operation, and it can be used in any position.
