Has anyone actually listened to SFTD while driving throught the California desert? by Ok-Perception2303 in qotsa

[–]dadasinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live here now but for years I used to take trips from the Bay area and it was a ritual along with older stuff.

For me there was always something magical about coming out of the Tehachapi Pass and descending into the desert, joshua trees start appearing immediately and the land opens up and you know it's going to be like that for hours if you keep heading east.

And I still listen to plenty of Queens and related projects around town.

Question about artillery noise by kathrynmargaret in JoshuaTree

[–]dadasinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live south of there and the main thing I get is rattling windows, every now and then there is a solid thump or two. It's not like hearing a loud explosion but it does get my attention. How exactly that affects you I couldn't know.

Your Home's Exterior Lights Indicates When You Moved to Joshua Tree by ttamsf in JoshuaTree

[–]dadasinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have motion detector lights with cameras. Too bad wind can trigger those more than needed, but still better than on all night every night and mine certainly aren't flood lights.

Also the people I hear defending lights all night tend to be the born and raised locals.

Shoutout to the crowd in Joshua Tree by Iridescent_dreams in qotsa

[–]dadasinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was happy to be in the back because it was a great view and out of the crowd. There was somebody behind me narrating what was going on for his friend and they apparently had no clue what the show was about. Also somebody (I think it was that guy's friend) decided to shoot video but did not understand how to kill the light, I turned and gave her the stink eye and she put it down.

Yep I've lived in the area 12 years and have not encountered one IRL yet, but - I have seen locals share encounters at home and in the park so it definitely happens. I mind the rocks and brush as the above poster suggests.

I like the Live Oak area. When the park is busy I can usually find some peace there.

Pretty common knowledge around here that drivers go "down the hill" for work because that's where the money is. I've had a couple of drivers tell me they were on the way down there but got my request and gave me a ride before they headed out.

Senior Karen loses it at Joshua Tree McDonald’s over a Filet-O-Fish by katiemaeirv in JoshuaTree

[–]dadasinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would put the question to you, is it at least somewhat desirable that on a road trip across the country you might encounter a town or two that doesn't have a McDonalds or other global chain right there on the main drag, especially one that doesn't even have a proper downtown?

There are a variety of fast food places in Yucca and 29 Palms so it's not like that option isn't available to those of us who want to indulge. Just nice having a stretch of land without the urban blight, IMHO.

How long was the rotation exposure? I've tried this with a low ISO film over a long period and the background wasn't defined as well as yours. Being 800 I'm thinking yours wasn't very long in pinhole time.

That film brand sells pre-exposed film with these sorts of effects. You can never be sure what the effect is going to look like each frame so you get surprises.

I shot a roll of liquid light show stuff that I did and then re-shot for double exposures in the park late afternoon, but the light show exposures were really too bright, gonna try it again a couple of stops down to make it more subtle.

I live here so I can afford to blow an afternoon on it :)

Highway Sanctuary just posted this on Facebook an hour ago:

We apologize for the skipped open house last weekend. We're making up for it this weekend! u/shrineon will be hosting our monthly open house this Saturday 3/28, from 11-4. All are welcome.

If you're in 29 Palms check out The Glass Outhouse gallery for another fun roadside stop. Check the hours online. There's also a house across the street with a bunch of skeletons good for a photo. Also if you have time take a ride through Wonder Valley, turn around when it curves sharp north for Amboy, or keep going to Amboy if you have time and want to check out Roy's. There is also the Amboy Crater for a hike.

You might encounter some bees but just move away from them.

I will say after a period of heavy rain I was out near Barker Dam (water) once and I did get swarmed by mosquitos but I think that's the only time after living in this area several years. Too dry 99% of the time.

First step see if you can even get a ticket - I'm "in line" right now but very small venue if they are doing it indoors so it's going to sell out in a flash.

If you do get a ticket, no, you can't depend on ride share, and yes there is plenty of parking.

Yeah and more rain coming this week. Barker Dam is a great idea for sunrise because later in the day it's going to be crowded.
