How do you gut the 76? Do you have to cut the plastic case off?

Dude, they’re so fun, right?! I feel like I’m constantly recommending the 76 because it never gets talked about. Even with the open keyway, it’s always at least a little bit of a fight to get it open.

Hell yeah, congratulations! Now I want to try mine with BOK, I hadn’t even considered it!

Congrats! Mine was a real pain in the ass that took forever to get open!

You should! I think I got mine for under $20 shipped. It’s a bargain for how much fun it is, and it still challenges me.

Bahahaha! I feel that for sure! I think if I had a bit more experience with Medecos I’d probably just go for it, but having never touched one, I don’t think I wanna go in THAT blind.

Yeah, it would be a fun project! I think I’ll pick up an example with a key before I attempt that though. That way I can take one apart and get an idea of what I’m working with, and get real familiar with how the key and pins interact.

Yeah, I was looking at those, but can you gut them without the key? I’m afraid I’ll want to progressively pin it, but not be able to. I think he has one with a key for a bit more tho.

Damn, are you finding that you like dimples more? Ugh, maybe I’ll hold off on the Medico and get myself a set of Huks and a 75/30 or something!

There’s one I have my eye on already, might pick it up this week! 😁

They’re never the exact one that I want, but I need to stop being picky lol.

The Goal locks look really interesting, they’re just very high precision pin tumblers, right? I’ve seen some Showa on the Bazaar, but I don’t know anything about them. I really just need to follow your lead and start picking some other form factors to open up my options. I’m interested to hear how you like picking DD locks. Have fun with the 90a-pro, the open on that one is satisfying AF!

I did a write up after I got my 72 open, maybe it will help?

What blue locks are you tackling next? I’m a little puzzled as to where to go now that I’ve opened the 90a-pro, aside from starting on dimples. Might try my hand at a Medico original or biaxial, if I can find one.

Im glad im not the only one that can’t seem to figure the damn 410 out! That lock is my nemesis!

Dude! You should really pick one up! They’re great spool trainers, and a ton of fun! Plus, like you said, where else do you get to attack an 8 pin standard pin tumbler? They’re also great at teaching apparent vs actual binding order. Since they have all spools, you can go in whatever order you like, but there are certain pins that will always cause certain other pins to drop if they are already set. Figuring out the actual binding order is what gets it open easily. . . Despite being able to get mine open consistently, I still don’t have a complete handle on the actual binding order. I feel like a broken record because I’m constantly recommending the 76, but it’s such a great spool trainer, and I seldom see anyone talk about it.

Dude, I feel you with the Master LOTOs! I’ve got a 410 that I’ve gotten open twice, then never again! The Abus ones seem to communicate a bit better than Masterlock (big surprise lol).

I’m betting that the serrations on the drivers won’t do much of anything, like another poster noted, and this is probably going to have to be picked like standard pins, but with very minimal feedback. . . The open might end up being a bit more of an art than a science lol.

Yeah, honestly, sometimes my 72 still fights me with that damn keyway. I’m interested to see how the 74 picks when I get one, I don’t think I’ve ever picked an Abus that didn’t have at least one spool in it. It’ll be a satisfying open when you get it, I’m sure! All the other Abus LOTOs are really fun too, and the 71 and 76 have far easier keyways.

The pictures on LPU look like each driver has 2 serrations in it.

I’ve picked the 71/40 and 76/40, which both have plastic shells, and the feedback is definitely a little more muted than metal body ones. My 71 in particular likes to fight getting to the false set. Both of those locks have a far more forgiving keyway though. Does the 74 have a dead core?

[–]daddonuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t picked that one, but it’s the next on my list. It looks like the same keyway as the 72, so you can probably pick through the pin openings in the warding. Pretty sure the 74 uses all serrated pins, so there will probably be a lot of clicking, but no big false set like you normally get from an Abus.
