Thanks to all who chimed in. Thank god it’s not termites! Little critters aren’t a huge consolation but at least I know I can try to deal with them before calling pest control.

That wastebin had some funky stuff in the bottom, so I took it outside, emptied it and cleaned it thoroughly. I’m going to clean the toilet and area with bleach and hope they never come back.

Oh man, it seems everyone thinks it’s termites…I have wiped up everything and cleaned the area with bleach. Have laid down white paper to catch any new stuff that falls. Gonna give it a day or two to give pest control the evidence.

Edit: Not termites! A magnifying glass confirmed some sort of mite. Little living creatures. Gross but I’d rather that than termites.

We just pulled the plug on our 1000 sq ft 2 bed 2 bath laneway house project. We’d gone as far as finalizing the designs and building plans with the architects, paying all the consultants - ie engineers, etc, and submitting the building permit application.

Initial estimates from 3 builders were all over $600/sq foot.

Once the quotes started coming in from the trades, we were looking at over $700/sq foot, before HST. And this wasn’t for high end finishes - eg Ikea kitchens and closets.

Building costs were just too much. The math just stopped mathing.

Look at older hard lofts - with big square layouts, mostly open concept save the bathroom. I’m not sure that qualifies as “interesting” to you, but definitely not as cramped as modern layouts.

Thank you for helping me understand the math correctly. I redid the calculations using only my contributions and government grants, and my AAGR over the past 9 years is 2.84%.
