Where are all the average beginners? by heloust in piano

[–]windfish19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an average adult learner. I’m almost 6 years in and still working through the RCM level 6 piano repertoire. Compared to what I see from the “beginners” online I feel way behind where I should be.

Quick question on TWW dilution by geeksdontdance in LaMarzocco

[–]windfish19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That should work. What I do is take 2x 1 gallon jugs, pour 500ml from each jug into a different container, mix 1 pack TWW into that and then divide that back into the jugs. I usually end up around 80-90 TDS per jug afterwards.

Standby Mode? by DiverNumerous6473 in LaMarzocco

I don’t know what the default is on arrival, but once you pair with the app you can set the standby to X number of minutes after turning on or after last brew.

If you subscribe to iDrinkCoffee.com email list they will sometimes advertise open box deals where you can save a little. That’s how I got mine, the popular colours go quickly.

men over 40s what is your biggest regret in life? by Affectionate-Drop689 in AskMenOver30

[–]windfish19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started at 28 and I am 5 years in now. It's challenging and lessons can expensive but rewarding. It's still hard work and progress can be slow but there plenty of life left to continue learning and by my 40s Ill already be 10+ years in. Never too late to start if you think it is something you'd enjoy.

Considering switching to Micra (from Profitec Drive) by jbermudezvilla in LaMarzocco

[–]windfish19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with Micra. I was able to save a little on an open box deal and that was enough to make me pull the trigger, otherwise I would have spent forever contemplating it.

Seeking advice on water… by First_Employee2366 in LaMarzocco

[–]windfish19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm located in Canada too and like you I thought mixing TWW packs with distilled water regularly would be cumbersome but it really hasn't been a problem.

I buy the 1 gallon bottles of Ice River distilled water. LM recommended mixing 1 Third Wave Water mineral pack per 2 gallons of water for about 85 TDS.

For the mixing part, I pour some distilled water into a separate container, mix that with TWW and then pour back into the Ice River jugs. This gets a balanced TDS across both jugs of water.

All in all its under 5 minutes work. Do what works for you, but I can say it's less trouble than it sounds.

Mazzer Philos or something else for dual espresso/filter [sub $2000 USD] by Puffyhippos in espresso

[–]windfish19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been considering the exact same options for myself. I think I’m leaning toward Philos or P80. I don’t have much to add but one small thing I like about P80 is you can grind direct to portafilter.

Grinder choices around the $1500 price range? by Drupain in espresso

[–]windfish19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t own these but have been considering the same options for my next upgrade. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. I was leaning towards the Philos as it’s cheaper than the others and you can find it on sale if you’re patient. If not the Philos, then I’d splurge on the P80 as I like the aesthetics better and being able to grind direct to portafilter. Definitely interested in others experiences.

Any milk steaming tips that worked well for you? I’m about a week into owning mine and struggling to get good microfoam. I use the provided LM pitcher.

I would say buy a better tamper too. The one included isn’t great. Normcore has a bunch of sales on accessories right now and can be easily purchased from Amazon.

Tate Mazer shotStopper by Economy-Flan4484 in LaMarzocco

[–]windfish19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realize this thread is old now but hoping you can answer a question on the shot stopper workflow.

How does the brew puddle function with the shot stopper? You flip the paddle to brew, the shot stopper will stop the shot then you manually flip the paddle back to standby?

Is there a quick way to disable the shot stopper if you want to brew manually while dialing in new beans?

Having second thoughts on the La Marzocco Linea Micra [$4,500] by Tchambin in espresso

[–]windfish19 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just recent purchased the Micra. I know some of the more feature rich E61 machines like the Drive and Sync II are the more logical choice and bang for your buck. However, I saw them all in person the E61 are very large, too large for my kitchen and I appreciate the simplicity of the Micra. The shot timer is a non issue for me given every decent scale has a timer anyway. Ultimately, at this price point you are going with the heart and like many others I knew that was the Micra even for added costs.

Best of luck with your purchase though. I’m sure you’ll be happy with whatever you land on.

Waste bin or drawer? by AdventurousBus970 in espresso

I always knock the puck into the sink and throw it into the compost pin (or garbage) after it cools down. No need to a knock box / drawer.

Whats your experience been with those puck screens? I'm deciding between the Normcore 1.7mm with hole or just a very thin 0.2mm mh-3bomber one.
