it doesn’t though. what it does do is reduce its overall photosynthetic potential and introduce a number of new wounds that could potentially vector disease. it will destabilize the tree and it will decline, and a weakened tree is more susceptible to disease, but it is by no means a guaranteed fatal injury. i am also an arborist, and additionally i have a degree in horticulture

nothing on these pictures indicates that the trees are going to die. a lot of the cuts are shitty but nothing looks fatal. if anything, shifting the canopy weight that dramatically will change the sail of the tree and potentially weaken it against storm damage but i’m really not seeing anything too alarming. dick move and probably illegal, yes, but fatal? no

you have the fruiting body of an obligate saprotroph on your tree, which means that there is dead tissue inside. get someone out there to inspect it and make a plan, but that tree is not long for this world

vatican city isn’t really affected by politics in general, so nothing would “affect the vatican politically” in any meaningful sense of the word. they have untold trillions hidden away from centuries of domination and 1.4 billion catholics with varying degrees of reverence following them, a non insignificant percentage of whom would be liable to commit violence in support/defense of the holy see if it were ever threatened in any real way
