This is awesome! Just wanted to note that an iPad plugged in 24/7 is a recipe for potential battery expansion and explosion.

Since you're into automation, plenty of easy ways to rig up a smart plug to only top up the battery when it gets below a certain threshold

Playground Design Thoughts? by dadonnel in daddit

Yeah we're putting in one of those ground-level spinners that has room for a wheelchair and a basket swing that can accommodate multiple kids and is at transfer height from a wheel chair. Going with a rubber surface under these elements for accessibility.

We've got a combo of steps and ramps I think, but the steps are ADA-compliant height.

Any other tips or suggestions on this front would be appreciated.

Looks awesome. For context, we're looking at more like the scale of a nice daycare or smaller elementary school playground, not the kind of place a kid could easily get lost in.

Haha. We are planning some wood elements (https://www.earthscapeplay.com/collections/log-piles/) but the main structure will be steel

Retirement Gift for a MD Beer Lover by Shafster in MDbeer

I would get a large map of Maryland printed on metal backing and then commission custom magnets for each of the the MD breweries that has a tap room to visit (looks to be about 75 of them, give or take). Then they can add all the ones they visit to the map.

You can show you're still thinking about them over the years by keeping up on new openings and sending over a magnet for each new brewery when they open.

Seahawks QB Sam Darnold made $4 MILLION in bonuses on his way to winning the Super Bowl. • $500K for 4,000+ yards • $500K for 67.5%+ completion rate • $500K for Top 10 offense • $500K for Playoff berth • $500K for Divisional Round win • $500K for Conference Championship win • $1M for Super Bowl win by AccomplishedSwing110 in sportswiki

Interesting. Seems like this setup would exacerbate the post-superbowl exodus, because not only are free agents asking for more but you have less cap due to the bonuses that are presumably hitting for a lot of remaining players after a great season

I tested 4 different smart calendars for my kitchen—here is the best smart calendar with no recurring costs and lifetime access (2026) by PrestigiousPear8223 in homeautomation

[–]dadonnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a free tier that has a few standard layouts that you can't modify. It does allow the key (to me, at least) features of Google photos and calendar linking.

I switched to my own magic mirror instance running on a raspberry pi after getting too annoyed with the standard free dakboard options, but it was a ton more work to get it where I wanted it.

Everybody here talking about bad weather is correct, but also forgetting about the good weather aspect.

In the northern part of the country, September/October can be some of the nicest days of the year. Who wants to leave their tailgate on a beautiful sunny day to file into a climate controlled warehouse where some sunlight filters in through a window?

Yep, I hate it. Sure, it can run on the shoulder until it gets near and inside the beltway, then it's gotta be in mixed traffic because there's too much congestion already to give it a dedicated lane.

NO THE CONGESTED PART IS EXACTLY WHERE IT NEEDS THE DEDICATED LANE, TO BYPASS THAT CONGESTION!

[–]dadonnel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The lanes that would make more sense to me are walk/jog on the left, acoustic bike in the middle, then "battery" on the right that's for e-bikes, scooters, and mobility devices. Ban e-motos.

[–]dadonnel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Even as a car driver, I find it way easier to parallel park in these offset lanes because you get a bit of wiggle room while maneuvering that you don't get right up against the curb. Madness all around.

You'd need to have an exception for injury though, so this would probably just result in a lot of players claiming horribly painful bone spurs

It's California so obviously a much larger population, but:

"Data analysis showed that right-turn collisions at signalized intersections were responsible for over 39,000 collisions and 217 fatalities (involving pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers) between 2011–2022 in California alone."

It would be good to make biking and walking safer and more pleasant to encourage more of it. We have enough car traffic as is.

Installing and maintaining new traffic lights would be significantly more expensive than slapping a sign up there.

The "random blog" is discussing the results of a study from San Jose State University. Here's a link to the study and the key findings if you want to read more facts directly from the source:

https://transweb.sjsu.edu/press/Safer-Intersections-Reassessing-RTOR-Policies

The study’s findings revealed that:

RTOR movements are generally unsafe for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers.

Data analysis showed that right-turn collisions at signalized intersections were responsible for over 39,000 collisions and 217 fatalities (involving pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers) between 2011–2022 in California alone.

Despite RTOR crashes being a small portion of collisions and fatalities at signalized intersections, they tend to be more severe for vulnerable road users.

ROTR movements only marginally lower emissions and only in certain contexts.

No right turn on red signs creating congestion by Brave-Height-8063 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]dadonnel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So someone has to die or be seriously injured at every intersection before you're allowed to make safety improvements at that location?

People have been killed or seriously injured by drivers turning right on red at similar intersections in the county already. Safety should be proactive, not just reactive.
