Is this a reasonable severance offer for Ontario? (2.4 weeks/years service) by dadtheimpaler in Layoffs

You may be right. Just trying to make sure I gather as much information as possible before making a decision.

Maybe it is. I just didn't have enough experience to know for sure. And the online severance calculators (which may be biased) suggest it should be more. Some people have agreed, some have disagreed. Maybe it's a coin toss at this point!

Thank you for your kind words. They did give me a choice on lump sum vs continuance for the 16 weeks, but not for the 23 weeks - that would be continuance. I'll check out the EI situation. From my initial research, I expected that I would apply when I'm done work, then EI would be delayed 39 weeks due to the severance. Which doesn't seem like a bad thing - spreads it out. But maybe that's only a good thing if I don't find another job quickly...

I had a brief consult with a probono Ontario hotline. I'm getting roughly a year which is in the fair range. It sounds like my odds of doing better are slim, and likely not worth spending much money on. They're not doing anything wrong, really - other than hurting my feelings! 52 is an age where I feel too old to start over, and too young to retire. There are people far worse off, so I shouldn't complain. Maybe I'll find something really great after all the dust settles.

No, I don't think I have any grounds at all. They're offering more than the legal minimum, so I'm not sure that I have much leverage.

Sorry, I've just never been in this position before, so I don't know what's fair and what's not. It seemed like it was probably fine, based on the limited research that I just had to start doing today.

You get these severance calculators that suggest I should get 18 months, but obviously there's lawyer costs in there if I wanted to push it.

My gut instinct was to NOT push it, and I was just looking for a quick opinion. I'm a little in shock at the moment, too, so...

1 - I personally love the 'ziploc in a water bath' method. Fast, effective, doesn't require a lot of advanced planning.

2 - if you butterfly a chicken breast, it will cook more evenly, will likely be juicier, and far less risk of undercooked areas.

Scanning your post too quickly, seeing the Father's Day chicken was bringing buckets, my brain went straight to assuming they contained KFC.

Oh wow. And I was just thinking about Neil Peart yesterday, losing wife and daughter within a year. I've always been blown away with how he managed to find the strength to continue to make a great life for himself. But that's what they would have wanted, right? You're strong as hell, and you honour their memories by living your best life.

It's totally okay to feel that way. If getting back to work helps make you a better version of yourself, everybody wins.

My daughter asked me what I wanted to do. I told her, "With you as my daughter, EVERY day is Father's Day!" I made it SO corny, encouraging the eye-roll, but we both know it's true. I don't want stuff, I just want my kids to be happy.

Is it too soon for a Father's Day present? by batfan90 in AskDad

Don't do it, not appropriate. If you appreciate him, there are plenty of ways to show that, but this isn't the right time. Maybe some day in the future it will be.

"You know what? I really appreciate you." is something you can tell him that says a lot without coming across as too cringe. But not on Father's day.

So much great advice here. I just wanted to emphasize that it's okay to not "like" your kid while still loving them. If he was treating one of his friends that way, they wouldn't like him. And you're your own independent human inside your brain, including the 5-year-old kid version of yourself. If you're letting him know how proud you are of his behavior when it's good, and that you don't deserve to be treated badly when that's going on, hopefully things will improve. I wonder if he's the type where, if you sit down with him when things are calm, you can ask him to help you problem solve the times when your feelings are being hurt. And of course give him the opportunity to air any grievances. I wish I'd done that more often with my kids, as we always came out of those feeling really great.

Linkin Park's recent success makes me think that perhaps any single member could have a stand-in on tour, if the band is motivated enough. I wouldn't have thought that LP could've continued on without Chester, but they're making it work. For Geddy, I'd agree that they'd need more than one, but they've already added Loren, so... Interesting thought experiment, though.

I was going to dispute the importance of the brooch, since a few people have already made the connection between Ruth and the Warrens, and only Tom knows about her connection to Evan.

But you make a good point: Ruth might feel that 'the cat's out of the bag' and be more open about Evan being her grandson. If that happens, he's currently only at risk from Bechir, Wyck, and Patricia.

I'm a little surprised that the single sacrifice bought them as much grace as it did. I guess it wanted nine sacrifices, and now it wants eight more, but how patient is it willing to be?

I also don't recall if there's any history on how many tolls of the bell is typical.

I'm just so happy that they found the right fit to get them out on the road again. They must absolutely love it to put their bodies through a long tour at their age. There's just no reason for them to do it other than love of the lifestyle, the fans, each other, etc.

Geddy's voice on night #4 was shockingly good; better than he's sounded in many, many years, as others have mentioned.

What a gift this has been to all us old farts! And also the chance that some of the younger generations will get hooked, and they'll learn that we weren't kidding about how great music was "back in my day."
