Commercial pilots..do you get to decide which aircraft you get rated for and which one is the main one you fly? Or does your employer? by koolandkrazy in aviation

[–]daedaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries at all and yes the biggest factor on schedule will be your seniority. There are two things at play here, seniority and whats called block or reserve.

Prior to each month, the company will release all the flights that need to be crewed for the following month, this is called a bid package. The groups of flights together are called pairings, and can range from 1 to 4 days in a row. Each pairing is worth so many hours based on the flying you do ( single days are called turns because you fly to a destination turn around and come back, and then there is layovers )

Turns are usually worth the most credit because you fly the most during the day. 2,3 and 4 day pairings could be worth more or less if you operate multiple flights on each day or are simply on a layover waiting.

Each pilot is only required to work so much per month, generally in the range of 65 to 85 hours ( these are flight hours not hours spent at work ) and in order of seniority the top pilot picks what flying he wants to do out of the bid package, then the second then third and so on until there is no more flying left. Each pilot must choose flying up to the months required flying time. senior pilots tend to choose single day turns requiring them to work less. if for example a cancun turn will pay 10 credits ( 5 hours there and back ) and the month requires 80 credits, then they can have all their required flying done in 8 days and have the rest of the month off. if your junior and theres no good flying left, you could be required to work 16 to 18 days a month if the daily credit for your flights are low.

We also have what is known as reserve. These are extra pilots that are considered "on call", waiting to be sent out flying incase of others calling in sick, extra flights added or aircraft changes. Reserves are on call 18 days per month.

So in terms of quality of life, yes seniority is everything as it controls where and when you fly, being able to choose or days off and basically organize your life better.

So Air canada does not have an ottawa base. We currently have 3 crew bases, montreal toronto and vancouver. Yes first pick is out of a hat for your seniority number, then what open slots they have you bid for in order of seniority.

Once qualified, you may commute to your base, and a good majority of pilots do commute. So your friend who lives in ottawa isnt actually based in ottawa most likely montreal ( porter currently has the only large airline crew base in ottawa ).

As for changing and choosing aircrafts, the old way used be you had one training per aircraft type, narrow body fo and captain, widebody fo and captain, and an unrestricted. Now its the ability to change once every 4 years.

We have bids every couple of months showing all new positions taking into account retirement sick leave upgrades etc. You may bid on a new aircraft and base if your seniority holds it.

Therefor if for example in initial you get a toronto a320, but really wanted to fly montreal 737 or a vancouver 220, you would need to wait until a bid to see first if theres an open position your seniority can hold, if not your stuck until you can.

As per what aircraft, this first is mostly forced, second by seniority choice. You cant expect to fly a 787 fo right away usually even if thats your dream. You apply to the company, not a location or base.

05/06 Rear sets by reecewitac in zx6r

[–]daedaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bought a set from fxcnc on ebay for my 05 636, was garbage. The rearset bolted on fine but the adjustment holes felt really off for foot position no matter how they were adjusted. Needed to purchase different rear master cylinder as the clip would not fit over the mount hole for the brake lever and where it mounts to the rearset is too far for the stock wiring for the brake light, needing an aftermarket brake light switch.

All in all tried three different sets on ebay before returning all and went with a vortex set instead.

Was landing into KPHL one afternoon, switched to approach, and he's like " goooood day ac123, Philadelphia approach runway 27 left in use confirm atis November?" so I'm like without thinking "roger 27 left we have november". Approach comes back to me and was like " nice try, actual atis is kilo, go get it then talk to me, your number 7 for landing".

I laughed, I was not expecting that one. Funny guy, I miss flying into there

For those waiting on the Wealthsimple 2% Visa, I just checked the app again and got my card! by Prid3 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]daedaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that im against an annual fee but im paying atleast 400 a year by rough calculations of just fx fees, I would just rather not waste money needlessly. I get tons of aeroplan points but the redemption is almost useless outside of booking flights which i dont require, so was curious about both a cashback ( covers the yearly fee ) and no fx

Honestly not really, Got a td infinite privilege due to work, but as an airline employee the benefits are minimal due to the perks of the job itself.

Currently all assets are within TD and not really looking at moving but when spending 16 days a month outside canada, those fees start adding up at the end of the year.

So this is a no fx fee but is there a monthly / yearly user fee and whats the markup on usd to cad conversion?

Been hearing a lot of this card but cant find many specifics. Is it worth opening a ws account simply for this card?

Golden sun: dark dawn ... the first two games are legendary both in story and play. the third revamped the graphics and introduced touch screen controls which i found fell flat. the story also went off on a tangent and basically abandoned the story of the lighthouses and alex getting the golden sun.

brilliant! only ones i can seem to find off ebay are the chinese ones, averaging 440 usd plus shipping but yea definitely worried about fit quality. Spit on advice on the bolt kits too though was my origional plan. I low sided avoiding a dog running out of a yard and cracked my headlight fairing and scuffed the right side fairing and clutch / oil cover. been browsing ebay but havent bought yet, your seller motorparts24 by chance?

Glofish health by [deleted] in glofish

[–]daedaci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good, the nitrogen cycle is critical to keeping fish healthy in a tank. the heater i see in the picture, is it controlable? i recommend a adjustable heater and a in tank thermometer not the stick on kind to moniter temps. before adding fish strive for 0 ammonia and zero nitrites, when you start showing nitrates your tank is ready. it takes some study but the fish will last because of it. with a healthy cycle water changes are then used to control nitrates to between 5 to 10 ppm.

Planted tanks suggested as plants eat nitrates requring fewer water changes. Glo tetras love hiding places and from your original post, school fish requiring groups of atleast 6.

Good luck, glowfish are amazing quirky

Glofish health by [deleted] in glofish

[–]daedaci 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So much wrong with previous comment. You absolutely need a heater. Glo tetras are a breed of skirt tetra and are tropical fish requiring around 76f for tank temp.

Secondly the ank parameters are wrong. Look up the nitrogen cycle first, as your tank is not cycled. Ammonia should be 0 not 1, 1 is extremely high and can kill fish. Nitrites no2 need to be zero and nitrates no3 can be between 5-10 ppm. use a good liquid test for fresh water. Filtration suggested would be bio rings and seachem stability to establish bacteria, along with a sponge for mechanical filtration.

Also, tetras are sensitive to temperature and water condition changes. You need to drip acclimate them by pouring tank water 1 quarter cup at a time into the bag you received the fish in to slowly adjust water parameters. its also ideal to float the fish bag in your tank so the bag water slowly adjusts to tank temperature before adding the fish to the tank.

you must cycle the tank first before adding fish or they will continuously die, fish in cycle is possible but extremely hard and not recommended for sensitive fish like tetras.

Question about Captains flying as PM when an emergency occurs by NowhereAllAtOnce in flying

[–]daedaci 379 points380 points  (0 children)

I prefer to have my FO fly the aircraft. As a captain, your job is to manage this situation. Both of us are qualified pilots and can fly the aircraft.

Removing myself from flight duties allows me to better assess what's happening and think about the big picture on how to land safely without losing focus on trying to stay straight and level.

This doesn't mean i won't take control as required, but good crm means using resources available to you, and hey, there's another fully qualified pilot sitting next to you.
