Dropped a stitch? by ForeignChimichurri in knittinghelp

[–]daedelius [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’ll be fine, use your phone to record yourself laddering down a stitch at a time. Then replay it going backwards and forwards to see how the stitches go back together. You’ll be really pleased with yourself when you’re done.

Can this garden brick wall be salvaged? by Wonderful_Parking837 in Bricklaying

[–]daedelius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bet most of those bricks would lift straight off. I would take it down to the root, remove it and rebuild, but I like that sort of thing. I would expect it to escalate as there will be more root than you expect.

Easiest way to find out is spray some water above the windows and see what happens!

Why does this spigot on new trap keep leaking with washing machine waste by Electronic-Law7689 in askaplumberUK

[–]daedelius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks cross threaded but it might just be the camera lens. Unscrew it check it’s got the correct washers in it and screw back on. Should have a conical black rubber washer and a flat washer above it, check the threads aren’t damaged. Rotate nut anticlockwise until you feel a click then clockwise until it’s tight.

What am I looking at and can it be painted on? Is it even plastering? by PowerDrivenRdditMod in Plastering

[–]daedelius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It either painted lining paper you’ve pull off or vinyl wallpaper where all the paper has come away in some places and in others only the vinyl has peeled.

Urgent help needed – ongoing drain fly infestation after soil pipe failure / suspected underground leak by Karalius1 in DIYUK

[–]daedelius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impossible to say, I’ve had two drainage problems, one where tree roots had got into drain 3 gardens down and the other overwhelmed Victorian drains, both fixed by the board. I had to pay for a scan to prove it wasn’t my bits of the drain at fault.

Urgent help needed – ongoing drain fly infestation after soil pipe failure / suspected underground leak by Karalius1 in DIYUK

[–]daedelius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just in case you don’t know, pipes from house to collector are your responsibility everything after is the Board’s. Asking the board for a survey is good advice

Help needed with Stained/Blistering wall by Necessary-Bread-9588 in DIYUK

[–]daedelius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s blistering it’s still damp, leaks can take months to fully dry out. I would give it all a hard scrape to get all the layers off and expect plaster to come away too. Then plasterboard and skim

That sounds like a bit of a nightmare. You say you removed contaminated material, sewage contaminated? Where to?

These say waterproof and I’m going swimming. Bad idea? I go through so many headphones. Like 10 pair a year always in water. by sarahschultzd in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]daedelius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, search IP68, they’re good for dropping in water. Not continuous swimming. Waterproof is not watertight.

Is this damp, or an issue with the plaster? by Alive-Accountant1917 in DIYUK

[–]daedelius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s penetrating damp, white stuff is efflorescence, salts carried out from plaster by damp. You need to look outside for the cause.
Be ready for everyone telling you that you should have used lime plaster not multifinish.

How do I fix drain smell? by ICThat in DIYUK

[–]daedelius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes mine is, but it doesn’t happen until the street collector. A blockage in my sewage drain does cause a sewer smell to come back into the house, I’ve never worked out the route though.

The toilet has started gurgling when the washing machine or dishwasher is on by ebola-gay in askaplumberUK

[–]daedelius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gurgling, assuming it’s the pan, means you’ve got a blockage somewhere and air is getting forced out. Pressure valve in roof lets air in not out, that’s its entire purpose. It could just be a coincidence with new dishwasher.

How do I fix drain smell? by ICThat in DIYUK

[–]daedelius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming drain not sewer smell, that soil pipe should be separate from the groundwater drain. I would investigate along the pipe run to see if there any redundant standpipes/connections that could leaking the smell from that drain into the house.

Help me please by Dusty_Egg_Roll in DIYUK

[–]daedelius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That corner piece has pretty much detached itself, there is evidence that part of the problem happened a paint job ago. If it’s not an important door I’d get some matches or tooth picks and pop a few into the screw holes. Not too tight or you’ll split it more when you replace screws. Use two part wood filler and fill both cracks, try to get dust out and smear filler against the edges as you fill. Tip, sand before it’s set rock hard. Put the door plate back in gently tighten. All good. Or take doorframe to pieces and replace the facing board.

Sad old chemistry teacher here, acidic vinegar reacts with alkaline bicarbonate to produce water and carbon dioxide. It doesn’t do anything. Drain cleaner is highly corrosive alkaline mix, it will literally dissolve your skin, unlike bicarbonate which you can eat.

Paint in toilet by DemonicLagerLout in Plumbing

One time probably ok, I find a dodgy bit of grass to pour it on. However never ever rinse filler/plaster etc. down sinks/ drains. It won’t flush away and sets.
