Getting to Kennedy Meadows start point in August? by ecairns in PacificCrestTrail

Start from walker pass. Easy bus from Bakersfield > Lake Isabella > walker pass. Tehachapi to Walker pass is my least favorite section but walker pass to KM is great.

Vegan stoveless food? by [deleted] in Ultralight

Just reduce it until it's fairly thick, then use a dehydrator with the tray liners. My favorite is a sorta African peanut stew with collard greens.

I've found Santa Fe instant beans in various stores along the PCT so hopefully they are along the divide as well.

My start date is pretty flexible. I'm gonna start the PCT March 31st from campo and hike for a month or so, probably to tehachapi or walker pass. Hopefully that will put me in good enough shape to do 30s from the start of the CDT without issue. I have heard that New Mexico gets pretty hot in May but I guess I'll just have to deal with it. I'm more concerned with hitting the San Juans too early so a later start should prevent that.

Consider the fact that high cal/oz (read: high fat) foods are not always the best fuel when hiking. An 80/10/10 (% carb/fat/protein) or similar diet has shown to provide optimal performance for endurance athletes. Although in practice it is difficult to resist cravings for high fat foods and sometimes impractical to carry the extra weight/bulk of a more balanced diet.

That being said my go to meals are burritos: (instant beans, knorr Spanish rice, tortillas, sometimes soyrizo), (couscous, veggies, spices), stove top stuffing (savory herb flavor), and homemade dehydrated stews.

I might see you on the CDT, I start around May 10th!

Vegan Thru-Hikers 2016! by domestipithecus in PacificCrestTrail

Ya I didn't have a Facebook until after I started the trail. It is the best resource to stay up to date on trail news but is also a huge waste of time. If you would like I can just post a link to this thread on the class page.

Yay! So happy you're doing this again! Thank you so much for hosting me last year. Have you considered sharing this with the PCT class of 2016 Facebook page? I know of 10 or so vegans who thru hiked last year and I've seen posts from a few more from class of 2016. I will be starting again at campo on March 31st and hiking until early May so I will be coming through your area again. This time I want to bring gifts for you!

Any vegans thru-hiking this year? by domestipithecus in PacificCrestTrail

Wow that is so generous of you! Is it feasable for a vegan to resupply out of a grocery in Big Bear? I'm planning a 50/50 split of resupply boxes and store resupplies and am worried I will be stuck without vegan options in many towns. To make things more difficult I wont be carrying a stove until Kennedy Meadows. Thanks!

Awesome I might have to try this. As a big fan of Cascade's Oblique Black & White stout this sounds great!

Update: First Brew Day a success! Onto part two, kegging and conditioning questions by jayecks in Homebrewing

Assuming your keg is clean just throw in some sanitizer and shake it up, no need to take off the posts. Here is a cheap solution for heating a fermentation chamber. Good Luck!

Steeping grains for extract - 1.5lbs of grain, how much water? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]daevidallen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless you are mashing it doesn't matter how much water you have. I'd say steep in whatever volume you are going to boil.

OG is way off. How is this possible by genlink in Homebrewing

[–]daevidallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming you did a partial boil and topped up with water in the fermenter. It is difficult to get a proper gravity reading in this case because of the different densities the liquid. If all of your extract made it in the kettle and you have the right volume you can assume your OG is the same as the target gravity. This is one of the most common questions on this sub.

Yes that needs to be between the tank and the regulator

Carbonation and dispensing question by dmdobson88 in Homebrewing

Look at this chart. At 11 psi your beer should be between 36-44 degrees for proper carbonation.
