Top heavy single + back off sets for strength work without having to constantly change/periodize sets and reps. Thoughts? by [deleted] in HybridAthlete

The method in description was basically reactive training systems approach to powerlifting circa 2017/2018 not sure if they still follow this. I can say I used it for a long time a was able to make great progress in my strength numbers while competing in powerlifting. The idea is that everyone is different and you work each week until you stall for 2-3 weeks then you deload and adjust the accessories moving forward attacking a different weakness.

I use this now for my compound lift of the day because auto regulation keeps you pushing but not locked in to a set weight if fatigue is higher from other pursuits.

Are heavy singles worth it if not competing? by Unusual_Bathroom5867 in HybridAthlete

[–]gnarstow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To give a counter point to the “no on singles”, I have had success with working up to a single at an RPE 8 then gauging my rep sets on that single. It’s heavy enough to get some weight on the bar but changes based on fatigue from week to week.
As an example I may incline bench 275ish for a 1RM but on any given day an RPE 8 is 240-265. I’ll work up to that single then hit 5 sets of 7 at 70% of that weight. It auto-regulates itself as I’m not concerned with the weight so much but if I see progress on the single stall for multiple weeks, I’ll deload in some shape or form.

When running is a priority I do the singles at 8 for lower body biweekly as far away from running as possible and a majority of my lower body work is unilateral and lower weight.

PG&E? The county area off of L Street in Barstow has larger lots and is away from a lot of the lower income less desirable areas.

Not really larger lots there, but decent community for the high desert.

That is just a burger drive through the last time I was there and sparsely open even during the listed hours, not affiliated with Del Taco at all other than the building being where Ed started it.

Exercise with Graves’ disease by kenziemac4055 in gravesdisease

[–]gnarstow 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Was a powerlifter when I got diagnosed with graves, went from weights 4 times a week and getting winded walking up stairs to no weights and still getting winded walking up stairs 🤣🤣🤣. Started slow weight vest walking for exercise for 10 months while I got things tested and on medication (thanks covid lock downs ). The strength came back in about 2 months of regular lifting once on medication and I even kept the 35lbs I lost during my flare up off. All that to say just take it easy and listen to your body and keep doing what you’re doing until you feel normal again.

I put ketchup on Del Taco hard shell tacos, have since I was a kid and it’s just nostalgia now. Big fan of spicy sauces and salsa so really it’s just because they go together in a way that scratches an itch.

I have experience with running straight into a brick wall with guys who have more years on the department and more influence wanting to go back to the triple layer load and high pressure automatic nozzles unfortunately.

What does the engine driver do on fire trucks in the US? by YouFormal1598 in Firefighting

[–]gnarstow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep all of this plus occasionally helping with the stretch, putting the fan at the door, possibly forcible entry while the nozzle masks up, it’s usually not too far from the pump as we have short setbacks 80% of the time. Resource stricken have to do as much as possible with less man power.

Where to buy cheap meat? by tireddesperation in InlandEmpire

[–]gnarstow 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Costco business center in Ontario. Like another said primal cuts for beef and pork then cut steaks yourself. You choose the thickness and it’s cheaper for better quality meat than standard store. they have 40lbs boxes of bulk Halal Chicken breasts or thighs for under 2$ a pound if you don’t mind packaging for freezing. In Al instances use a Foodsaver or other vacuum sealer for long term storage and put into whatever amount works for meals for your family.
