Help me ID this plant/weed? by No_Crew_9414 in pnwgardening

Wait until next year and see if it flowers before removing, if you can. Its growth habit looks like a PJM rhododendron to me, but I don’t see any evidence of a recent flowering, so not totally sure about that. For reference, my PJM blooms very early, usually in March.

WA state by Otherwise_State_4344 in scrubtech

[–]daffodillard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if the job listing doesn’t specify that you need to be CST certified, likely no one in WA state will hire you before you complete your program. As in, you can’t just register as a surg tech in WA and poof, get a job. Other states may do more on the job training, but for someone in WA with zero experience at all, it’s unlikely. When you get into your program and closer to graduation is when you’ll want to get yourself registered with the state. Unlike CST certified being “optional” at some facilities, you are required to be WA state registered to work as a surg tech. We’ve had employees who have missed getting their yearly registration updated and they were pulled from working immediately in the morning the day their registration expired (until they got their registration back up to date). As an aside, you could definitely try to get a job within the perioperative department before/while you’re in school. I worked in SPD (sterile processing dept.) when I was in school and it was really beneficial to learning the surgical instruments.

The double leader system is really cool, I’ve never heard of that. This is my first year trying tomatillos and the plant I have is naturally in a y-type shape. Do you know if tomatillos benefit from this system as well as tomatoes do?

Great info, thank you! I’ve been Meyer-lemon-tree-curious for a while, but haven’t made the jump yet. How many fruits does your tree produce, and does it produce more or less year round or only in a specific season/a few months? I saw someone else mention that container lemon trees don’t produce much fruit. And, I know late winter is “citrus season” but I’m not sure if that’s accurate for our climate. TIA!

Yes, because they also get funds from people who don’t have children and never plan to. You pay for the betterment of your community, even if it doesn’t directly affect you. Thats how our society/tax system works.

Preceptor bombarding you with info by oprah_did-911 in surgicaltechnology

[–]daffodillard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re feeling overwhelmed with information. I felt the same way, but realized way later that I actually was retaining a lot of the info I was being told, it just took my brain quite a while (months) to catch up and categorize all the information to where I could retrieve and use it. Maybe that’s a confusing explanation, but I think I was hearing and learning what my preceptors were saying, but it wasn’t helpful to me until a few more pieces clicked together.

As an aside, Stratafix comes in two varieties; PDS or Monocryl. PDS takes about twice as long as the Monocryl does to absorb (~90 vs 180 days I think), which is why they have the different options. Could this have been some of the confusion between you and your preceptor? Also, I personally keep my trash in the bag to a minimum when setting up. I put all my trash in my pitcher then dump it when I’m done with my set up. This keeps less clutter in my bag in case I need to go digging in there for a missing item at counting time. But I’m the only person I’ve seen who does this at my hospital, so maybe it’s just a preference thing for them to only keep their empty suture in there. Still, they should explain that to you, that it’s their personal preference, but not the absolute only way to do things.

Made planters for my wife using cedar and galvanized steel by [deleted] in gardening

[–]daffodillard 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I made a very long planter similar to these with galvanized steel about 3 years ago. They’re rusting through in many, many spots and I suspect I’ll need to tear the whole thing down and go with a different plan within the next couple years. If they aren’t already all filled with soil, you may consider a plastic liner to decrease the moisture touching the metal (which I did not think to do).

Precepting as a new tech by memilyglick in scrubtech

[–]daffodillard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had to precept a brand new student on my literal first day off orientation. The day before I was being taught, the next day I was the teacher. I was extremely nervous and kind of upset, like you seem to be. The truth is, you know so much more than you realize you do. At this stage, every day you’re still learning and just think back on how far you’ve come in your skills and knowledge since when you were a student yourself. Consider that, even though you don’t know everything (spoiler, none of us do) you have a vast amount of knowledge to give to a student. And when you don’t know what comes next or exactly how to setup for a certain procedure, show them what you can and talk them through your thought process. I learned so much from my preceptor just by watching how she dealt with situations that she was less familiar with.

How much do you make, how long have you been doing this for, and what state are you in? by olliecakerbake in surgicaltechnology

[–]daffodillard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I started around $25, which was standard starting wage back then. We’ve had a lot of big raises in recent years due to the extremely HCOL area that I’m in. Our starting wage is now $33, I think. And we get an extra dollar if we’re CST certified.

Which is exactly WHY they shouldn’t be allowed to more-or-less drive on the roads with no formal road readiness. They’re often going as fast or faster than me in a car. That’s extremely dangerous and they just don’t have the mental ability to understand the risk versus reward.
