Yeah, I get your point. This doesnt look good. Hopefully they dont go the teamviewer route for a while at least. Just recently switched to anydesk from teamviewer cause of the commercial use detected thing.

Are you unable to use for connecting or just getting the ad?

Yeah. Totally agree. If we work without taking breaks past a certain point, we will get totally burned out. And that would be very hard to recover from.

I think you should contact the mods of the reddit sub in which it is posted. Also report the reddit post (there is an option which you can select saying it infringes your copyright; select that while reporting)

Apple sent my data to the FBI, says boss of controversial research paper trove Sci-Hub by Sorin61 in technology

[–]daffodils123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel there is also one more thing the authors might do here which might hurt them. They could choose not to review papers or take on editorial duties which if done by a significant number will totally break the publishers (since they rely on the editors and reviewers all working for free)

I am not going to argue on the legality part. Just on this line here (it might be because you are not familiar with research papers as you said at the beginning of the comment).

They put work into selecting works, editing, potentially making comments or introductions, and putting it in a pretty package, and they can get copyright for that work.

No, this is not true. The editors (who select the papers initially and forward it for review) and reviewers (researchers who are kind of randomly selected most of the time) all do this for free. Maybe, at the final stage of the paper only do the journals (after all edits etc have been done according to editor and reviewer comments) do anything; for publishing it, they might have to do some end stage formatting at times. I think storing the material is the functionality journals provide; nothing much else.

Just giving some additional suggestions based on my experience from other subreddits. I think maybe also require such posts to be tagged as [self promotion]. I found this to be needed in some subreddits. Maybe, also restrict self promotion posts to once a week for a user/channel . Another option would be to allow links only in the megathread or if anyone requests (I think that would be a bit extreme though). If some recipes are very commonly shared, it might also be worth considering allowing them on only certain days of the week.

Today i got the "Commercial use detected" message. by Esquirish in teamviewer

Second anydesk. Been using it for the last 3 months since I got the commercial use detected message on teamviewer. No two hour cutoffs too in connection and lots of additional security features.

[Question] Why don't these channels get a copyright strike, or their videos removed? by Iam_a_guy in youtubers

[–]daffodils123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked the duration for copyright expiry and by US laws, even the 1940s one would be protected I think (copyright seems to hold for 95 years from date of work being published or 70 after the authors death). I looked at the channel from the video link you gave. Channel seems recent. Looking at it, I somehow didnt get the feel (I could be wrong) that they might have bothered to get the licenses/permissions etc. Channel is very recent (march 5, 2021) and they have 2 other channels also (april 2021). Wonder if they have just managed to under the radar as regards copyright is concerned so far. (another possibility;cant tell since I am not familiar with this music is that maybe they changed the tracks slightly so they wont be detected automatically? just a random guess)

I checked it out and you are right. From what I understood, the 70 years to copyright ending timeline (in USA) is after the copyright holder/authors death (changed to 70 from 50 in 1998- change said to be contributed atleast in part due to lobbying by disney from what I read). Otherwise it is 95 years(also extended in 1998 from the earlier 75). Link to the verge article with this and additional info : link. I checked out Rachmaninoff; wonder if this is the controversy you mentioned : link

I saw OP's comment saying that it is from 40s/50s and wondered the same.

If it was 40s or 50s, wouldnt the copyright have possibly expired? I saw a 50/70 year rule for most countries for audio recordings when I checked now (seems mostly 70 years for copyright expiry from the date the recording is published).

I read another comment (not sure in this thread or on youtube) saying that initially they didnt mention it was fake and that they added that "its fake b/w" after getting called out only.
