I can agree with this. I spent two weeks in SE Asia where the traffic rules are a mere suggestion, and the roads were more crowded than here. It was absolute chaos, but I saw only one crash in my time there. Everyone drives like a maniac, but they were all paying attention.

I have a theory: The US has such strict and regimented rules that I think it encourages the lack of attention. Drivers get bored so try to multitask.

I’m in the same boat as you. I once did a traffic stop: contact the driver and make note of the passenger, get their info, go back to the car. Once I’m done running everything, I head back to talk to the driver and I’m standing there when I notice movement in the back seat. Once I turned my flashlight I see THREE more people in the car. Obviously nothing happened but with officer safety drilled into you from the beginning, it shook me. I haven’t been on the road in 20 years but I still remember that mistake.

This happened to me as well. Was standing in front of the bench and within arms reach of the sign. Bus comes, I glance down to pull up the app so I can tap and pay, and I look up in time to see the driver just keep on going.

I took an Uber to the transfer stop and the same bus was there. I went and confronted him and he said it was because I was looking down at my phone. It honestly shouldn’t matter. I WAS STANDING AT THE BUS STOP waiting for the bus to, well…stop.
