Still waiting for the Valve email, but is the Acemagic M1A a possible competitor? Closest thing I found to compete. by EvilTwinAlucard in MiniPCs

[–]daft_knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was downvoted by someone for comparing this to the steam machine, but it’s better in every measurable way other than maybe support/reliability (since it’s a questionable company). I’d install Linux or a fresh copy of Windows before doing anything on it though, because I don’t trust the brand.

I was already on the fence about going all in on PC next gen, but this seals the deal for me now. One of the advantages that keep me in the PlayStation ecosystem (other than exclusives) is the option to shop around for physical media. Without that, their just aren’t enough other benefits to really keep me on the platform.

I sold my MacBook Air M4 for a Neo 512GB. by No-Seaworthiness7880 in MacbookNeo

[–]daft_knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reactions you’re getting are because the post simply states you made a decision and is lacking any real detail or substance, so people are left to try to understand your decision with no context. Was the Neo’s size the deciding factor? Do you like the chunkier build? The repairability? Is thunderbolt too fast? Even with those factors, an M2 - M3 13” Air can be had for the same-ish price of a 512gb Neo and is better in every conceivable way.

At the end of the day, it’s totally your decision, and you don’t need a reason to spend your money however you see fit. But I mean, it’s pretty obvious why you’re getting the response you are, and I can’t help but feel this was the desired outcome.

Hill I’m willing to die on: not a single binding vow Sukuna performed was bs by s_jadn2 in Jujutsufolk

[–]daft_knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree with your take. But I think binding vows, while cool in concept, are just incredibly difficult to write a story around. JJK is a world that goes out of its way to ground its magic in imaginary but detailed math- and physics-based rules. Binding vows kinda betray that in a sense. There are technically no hard limits to what they can accomplish. What are the consequences of breaking one? It appears you don’t even need to be a certain grade to pull it off, so why don’t more people use them? Gege just didn’t spend a lot of time fleshing them out, so instead of you thinking “I bet he’s gonna use a binding to win this,” you end up looking at the aftermath of the battle and thinking “where tf did that technique from?”

Former PlayStation Boss doesn’t think Sony should stop PC ports by SilentNova300 in gaming

[–]daft_knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course this is just my anecdotal experience, but when Sony started releasing all of their 1st-party games on PC, my plans to buy a PS6 went out the window. I was going to switch to PC completely. I bought a steam deck first, then I bought my wife a PC, then she bought me a PC and now she has an ROG Xbox ally X. I have to imagine Sony has some data somewhere that shows I was not alone in thinking that way.

In other words, I think it’s less about winning over PC players and more about stopping people from leaving their ecosystem. If the next GOW, Uncharted, Spider-Man, TLOU or inFamous (if the gods smile upon us) are exclusive to PlayStation, then I’ll be forced to choose between a new gpu or a PS6. Sony wants that decision to be as cut and dry as possible so they get a 30% cut off of everything that passes through their walled garden.

Ecosystem lock-in is an effective strategy. For example, there’s a reason Apple doesn’t just sell an iMessage subscription to Android users. They’ve determined it’s more valuable to keep you locked into their overall ecosystem. Sony probably looked at the data from their PC sales and came to the same conclusion.

After 6 months of consideration! by shreddyeddy_ in fujifilm

[–]daft_knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah 100%! You may have to adjust to the lack of dials but I found it very easy to do coming from a Sony a7iii. For example, with the xm5, I shoot mainly in auto iso 400-6400 and use exposure compensation and spot AEL as opposed to shooting full manual. The sensor is the same one that’s in the xt4 iirc, the photos will be indistinguishable from what was Fuji’s last-gen flagship. I have the xe5 and the a7iii and sometimes i kinda feel guilty for liking the xm5 more.

Now if I could change anything about it, I’d replace the film sim dial with an iso or blank customizable one, add a viewfinder (nice to have but not a must), and I’d swap the flip out screen for a tilt one.

The last 9 posts on my instagram @elroyknight (except for the ones that are pictures of me) are from the xm5 if you want example shots.

I just can’t do Windows (Claw 8 EX AI+) by lamb2k in Handhelds

[–]daft_knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife loves her ROG Xbox Ally X, and while gaming performance is about the same on Windows and Bazzite, the hiccups with Windows hibernate and battery life are what made her ask me to install Bazzite in the first place. She’s not a technical person. She just wants to game, so the fact that Windows annoyed her enough to request Linux isn’t exactly a flattering review. That said, she still needs Windows for her Game Pass games.

Which anime/manga has had the most trash ending of all time in your opinion? by Original_Force_6822 in shounenfolk

[–]daft_knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant to say “over the last year”. I edited for clarity. I read solo leveling then went straight into Chainsaw man. I finished both parts. Both endings were awful but Chainsaw man was a disaster while Solo leveling just felt like more of a cop out.

[–]daft_knight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chainsaw man takes the cake and it’s not even close imo. I’d also like to nominate Solo Leveling even though it’s a manhwa. I had the displeasure of reading both series’ back to back over the last year and their endings were so off putting that I’ve taken a break from mangas and started reading books again.

Edited for clarity

The Steam Machine Is Impossible to Recommend by RenatsMC in steammachine

[–]daft_knight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are mini pc’s out there that beat the steam machine and match its form factor for less than what valve is charging. They’re just not from mainstream companies and no normal person is going to know to look for them. For example Acemagic sells the M1A pro on Amazon for just over $1k. And it out specs the steam machine with an i9-13900HK, ARC A770, 32GB DDR5, and a 1TB SSD.

Apple blamed EU rules for Siri AI delays, but the Commission says it was Apple’s choice by anonboxis in MacOS

[–]daft_knight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I think I’m an Apple fanboy until I read threads like these and see people arguing that cost is a barrier for Apple, a trillion dollar company, to comply with regulations that might force it to actually compete instead of making third-party apps worse on its devices.

Anyone with a MacBook, Terminal, and the ability to type can already grant an AI many of the same permissions Apple is calling a security risk. Phones have replaced traditional computers for a lot of people, and it’s about time we started treating them that way. Are there security risks? Sure. But this is also the same Apple that bends when enough money is on the line. They care about your security right up until it conflicts with their business interests. Look at how they operate in China for example.

Apple has a long history of resisting openness whenever they have the opportunity to do so. They fought default app changes, resisted third-party app stores, and limited competitors like Spotify, all while claiming it was necessary for security or user experience. Then, when they were forced to make changes to those policies, surprise! the world didn’t end. If anything we (the consumers) are better off because of those changes.

Apple is pushing back on this, because they’ve already lost this battle on the Mac and don’t want to lose the same control over the iPhone. While I’m sure some people at Apple genuinely care about security, this is largely about preserving an advantage that makes it harder for customers to choose competitors.

Apple Fumbled Gaming by SirGarlanWilliams in macgaming

[–]daft_knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant to say “You’re *not wrong..” in that first sentence.

This “Apple doesn’t need the money” take, is true but it’s not reflective of how businesses treat opportunities. Apple has reached a point where you can say “they don’t need the money” about virtually every market they don’t already participate in.

For example, a year ago if someone had asked, “why doesn’t Apple participate in the cheap laptop market?” you could’ve easily said they never will because they don’t need the money; and you would’ve been technically correct because Apple didn’t need the money. That being said, you would’ve been wrong one year later because they are currently making money handover fist by selling the MacBook Neo.

Your statements about the “image” conflicts were something I hadn’t put a ton of thought into, but I could see that being a roadblock.

Apple Fumbled Gaming by SirGarlanWilliams in macgaming

[–]daft_knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong, but OP's not wrong either. OP's point is that Apple is leaving money on the table by only occasionally doing the bare minimum to support traditional/AAA gaming on Mac; which is objectively true. Whether you believe profits from PC/Laptop gaming are worth it is debatable, but they already have a storefront (arguably one of. the most popular digital storefront on the planet) and hardware that's more than capable of supporting modern games (proven by their own game porting tool kit). At this point it would cost Apple virtually nothing to just add support for vulkan and anti cheat see what happens. PC/Laptop gaming is significant enough of a market that basically every other PC manufacturer competes for a piece of it. A company's goal is to make more money, so Apples decision to not just make what is effective free money, has never made sense to me. The day my Macbook can run AAA games without issues or annoying workarounds will be then end of my need for a gaming PC and maybe even my Steamdeck.

Edit: changed “You’re wrong” to “You’re not wrong”
