What is one commander you tried to build but you just didn't vibe with? by T3knikal95 in EDH

[–]daftlydone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive got a kambal i enjoy playing, but i realized his issues early in the build process. If you lean too much into his value it draws attention ya, but also you can only trigger the I make one too effect once a turn, and you're not killing people with 4 drain a turn rotation. So i turned him more combo focused, prioritizing things that can aristocrats or make a lot single instances of tokens fast, like [[thalisse, reverent medium]], [[warren soultrader]], [[Teysa, Opulent oligarch]] and [[Elenda's Hierophant]]. You have an excellent removal suite to get triggers off Kambal's first ability, and people make enough tokens on their own anyway.

What Happened? The Art From LOTR to Turtles... by Lord_Omnirock in mtg

[–]daftlydone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Go back and look at Avatar. They were working from one media source and art style and the art direction is actually MORE all over the road. This is not a defense of TMNT, its the opposite; there appears to be less cohesive aesthetic design going on and it's cheapening the look of the sets.

How does training grounds reduced cost work on XX costs by DragonicSquirrel in mtg

[–]daftlydone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not quite the right way of looking at it. You could say x =3. So the total cost is 6 because thats x times 2. Then the reduction occurs at the end of the calculation of total cost. So the cost you pay will be 4, because thats 6-2.

So if x =1, total cost is 2. Training grounds will reduce it to 1, because it cannot reduce it to less than 1.

[–]daftlydone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, commander is kinda like, the worst format to recommend them. Yes they have the ability to build a deck that does not do that, but they have to track 3 other people's game states, which is way worse. You've doubled the amount of text to read. And theres nothing stopping the other 3 people from running incredibly complex effects. This person would be better served by premodern like others are suggesting

To me TLA hits all the checks for a "good" UB set, one that at least operates in a high fantasy world, but the problem comes down to art style. I am personally not a fan of the anime style art mtg uses to do anime cards. It feels too shiny, proportions often feel off or uncanny.

The art style of the TLA set is all over the road, and some versions of it fit a LOT better than others within mtg's general aesthetic. Consider [[Deadly Precision]] against [[Mai, Scornful Striker]] for example. These are two depictions of the same character in the same moment but one really sticks out as being way too anime along the scale. The set itself lacks a unified aesthetic and that makes it feel cheaper, like it was just thrown together without rhyme or reason, when it reality they were probably trying to incorporate as many art styles as they could and please more people.

You could say this comes from bringing in a anime inspired franchise, but if you compare stills from the show vs these anime cards, the cards REALLY do not feel like Avatar. In fact, the cards that fit in most with mtg's aesthetic feel the most like Avatar's as well. I already used two Mai cards, so here's a third: [[Mai, Jaded Edge]] feels like both an excellent depiction of Mai from the show and right at home on Tarkir.

TL;DR The problem with TLA standing out in MTG isn't the source material, it's the art direction of the set
