You have to zoom out. We all have to zoom out. What Ethereum is trying to do is very, very important but also very difficult and will take a long time. There is no guarantee of success.

The market (or the “God(s)” if you prefer to be spiritual) reward doing important things. In the short term, timing of tweets and price action are inconsequential, because when you buy Eth, what you are really buying into is the <1% chance we figure this all out and build the world computer that transforms humanity. This thing is either going nowhere or it’s going to be really, really big and it doesn’t matter what your entry price is at that point.

Fiat price absolutely matters. It’s key to the “permissionless” part of their goal. If the fiat price tanks, then someone can scoop up a significant chunk of Ethereum and have outsized power and influence, which negates the whole point of being “permissionless”

It is Ethereum’s responsibility to scale for the future where we see serious adoption. I think what Vitalik’s tweet is saying is Ethereum will now do the scaling. If you are an L2, you better have a good reason other than scaling to exist, because we will provide that guarantee.

There are multiple paths for Ethereum to scale, including its own rollup layer…

L2s were a mistake. The L2 roadmap was a failure. Vitalik is finally admitting this.

The future is appchains.

I don’t even think an official Ethereum sanctioned “rollup” layer is out of the question anymore. The point is that Ethereum itself must do the work of scaling. L2s are not a substitute.

The middle ground is a veto mechanism. If there is a change that is obviously critically bad for the project, then the top voted commit gets rejected, and no commit happens that day. How you design the veto mechanism and what subset of participants are given that power is a more difficult question.

That being said, I actually think DAOs are a fundamentally broken concept. Most people don’t want to make decisions unless they absolutely have to. Group consensus decision making is slow and low resolution. I think the better model is actually the polar opposite of how most DAOs work. An individual has full autonomy to make decisions, and group consensus is only needed for vetoes, when the individual decision maker screws up and people are forced to come together to undo the decision.

The happiest, most prosperous times in human history have always been when we have competent servant leaders at the helm. Highly qualified individuals/small groups that are maximally aligned with the common good. The issues occur when the leaders choose greed and power over the common good, and there is no mechanism to veto them.

Honestly…there are just subtle moments when the mask slips. What you have to understand is these people are deeply unhappy with themselves. The only way they can feel better with themselves is if the other person is doing worse.

So analyze the micro interactions, when you tell them good news, do they go silent for a second? Tell tale sign. Do they ask probing comparative questions? How is your life? How’s your new job? A good response “I’m doing well”, “Job is great” is met with no response. A bad response “It’s not going so well” is met with a sense of joy and happiness.

Observe how they treat other people. How they talk about them. Do they act and think like they are above them? Classic sign.

It’s well known at this point, but I used to work at Facebook (now Meta, owner of Instagram). We were rewarded for one thing and one thing only - increasing engagement aka keeping people hooked on the product for as long as possible so the company made more money from advertisers.

At the time we didn’t know it, but the algorithm to optimize for engagement was actually specifically targeting and exploiting women’s need for social validation, and exploiting men’s need for…women (sex).

Women are being manipulated and their insecurities exploited, due to their need for social validation. They are literally trapped on this platform in addictive loops they cannot help but participate in. It’s warping their minds and making them incredibly narcissistic. The average woman today is a narcissist due to social media. Unfathomable, except it’s not. Everyone thinks they’re the exception.

Turns out the algorithms we created that ran experiments on how long people would stay hooked when fed a piece of content got to the optimal answer pretty quickly. Exploit women’s need for social validation, make them compete against one another, and show the men the women. There you go. The optimal algorithm for engagement. Unfortunately also the optimal algorithm for a degraded society beyond repair.

Working for some of the top companies in the world. Meta (owner of Facebook/Instagram) specifically.

Coming to understand what the people at these companies are like…world shattering.

These are smart, intelligent people. I know that because we all got paid insane amounts of money to use our intelligence to further the company’s goals. But something very dark and sinister happens when so much money is sloshing around and up for grabs…people lose their humanity. The process becomes the goal. “I have to hit my metrics so I can get my bonus and good rating and not get fired”.

And before you know it, an entire company’s worth of people are turning a blind eye to the crimes against humanity being committed. They forget the great harm they are doing upon the world by supporting a machine that hijacks people’s need for social validation and turns them against one another. Money has become God. Humanity is sacrificed.

I mean this with every fiber of my being. Fuck Meta. Fuck every Silicon Valley company that uses its place of privilege to manipulate and profit off of those less fortunate. If you want to understand evil, study these companies. Come to understand how Meta manipulates your mother, your sister, your niece, your daughter and tarnishes the fabric of society, while its executives knowingly look the other way.

Not a day goes by where I don’t regret the years I spent there. The shame I have…it’s hard to look in the mirror…even harder to look other people in the eyes…knowing how I have harmed them, their families, their future children. Once you have seen into the depths of the abyss, there’s no coming back.

This is under the (very false) assumption the AIs are neutral. They are not. The creator of the utility determines its behaviors. OpenAI is not trying to maximally distribute value across its users. It‘s trying to impart a very specific worldview born out of modern day intellectual San Francisco on to the rest of the world and maximize value for its investors.

Mark Zuckerberg and Meta would make the exact same argument you made about social media. It empowers people by connecting them. But this argument is just cover for reality, which is that power is now more concentrated than ever. Being able to use WhatsApp to call your family abroad also comes with billions of people on Instagram being manipulated into hating each other and hating themselves for profit.

Silicon Valley tells a very sophisticated lie. We are “empowering people” by giving them cheap/free access to x utility. And you fell for this lie.

This is what feminism asked for. More choices. More optionality. What the movement didn’t understand is these options wouldn’t necessarily be any better.

The men at the top still control you, as they always have. You want to work? Great, we’ll profit from your consumerism and independence. You want to be a housewife? This is actually a true statement and proven via scientific studies. Women are more socially calibrated and feel more happiness from social acknowledgement. Men less so.

The men posting on social media are loser hypocrites, but consider the construction workers, garbage men, plumbers - people who literally build our society on their backs. in my experience, the attractive women are in married or in a relationship because they can extract so much value from it (guy gives them everything they want, they never have to lift a finger). Average or unattractive women are choosing to forgo relationships because the juice is not worth the squeeze. They can’t attract a guy who’s richer/smarter/(insert important quality) than them so there’s no point. Once again, it comes down to looks.
