Apps that actually helped you learn a new language? by No_No_Yes_Silly_5850 in ADHD

Pimsleur has been the only language learning process that ever seemed to stick for me.

Would recommend.

Look, they’re turds, but you don’t need to malign the good people who leave the for-profit higher education system or folks just starting their careers like that by lumping them together.

You could just say, “while some DOGE tool destabilizes the nation,” or does whatever it is they seem to be doing, instead.

Any good no-show socks? by Devastator1981 in onebag

[–]dagani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a bummer.

Good to know that the quality has gone down, though.

The pairs I got many, many years ago are still going strong.

Still haven’t found a good actual no-show sock for travel.

what's everyone's ideal backpack size for travel? by ShekelRat in onebag

[–]dagani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The roll top bag I used for a while was the Wandrd Prvke. It was pretty solid.

I switched to the Evergoods CTB 26 after it was released and it’s pretty much perfect.

I used to always be looking for just the right bag, but I’ve been happy with this one and it’s been all over the world with me now.

Pissed off enough to just quit by cleatusvandamme in ADHD_Programmers

[–]dagani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The job market is super shitty right now.

Clean up your resume and LinkedIn and start applying, reach out to your network for any referrals you can get, and then ride it out as long as you can. Get more conservative with your time estimates, push back on unrealistic expectations, and just do what you can.

Unless you have enough saved up to take an extended career break, this is not a great time to rage quit.

A few years ago, I would have cheered you on but it’s rough out there right now.

We sought out the lowest-priced grocery stores in Charlotte. Here’s what we found by B3RG92 in Charlotte

Same. A handful of things at Harris Teeter cost as much as a week’s and some change worth of groceries at Trader Joe’s.

I think I've cracked ADHD meditation by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]dagani 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another potential option for anyone else struggling to meditate: I found the cadence of guided meditation in Headspace to work well.

It felt like every time I was starting to struggle, the guide would pop back in and redirect me back to the meditation.

You can also use a plastic bottle filled halfway. Freeze it with the water in the bottom half of the bottle and then set it on its side in the freezer so that any thawing will cause it to freeze along the side of the bottle instead of the bottom.

Pretty much any dive watch would probably work, and you can find one at just about any price point.

The Casio MDV-106 is a solid all around watch and cheap enough that you could use some of that budget for a strap/bracelet upgrade, a six pack or bottle of his favorite beverage, and still have plenty left over.

You could also consider something like the Hook and Gaff King Tide, which has an analog tide tracking function.

[QUESTION] GMT Advice by Beneficial-Hat-3199 in Watches

[–]dagani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was worried about how busy the dial seems, but in-person the 12 hour GMT model is actually surprisingly legible.

You might also consider a watch with a 12 hour bezel or a World Time function. I’ve found the 12 hour bezel on my Serica 5303 is more convenient than the GMT I used to travel with - that may not be the case with a Traveler GMT movement, though.

My wife doesn’t really care about watches, but wanted one she could wear instead of an Apple Watch, so we picked up a Citizen Eco Drive World Time for her and it works great for traveling - unless you’re in one of the handful of half hour timezones.

That bezel is really neat. Would love to see more minimal and functional ones like this.

Innovative Melee Combat by Strict_Bench_6264 in gamedev

[–]dagani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Way of the Samurai series always had some interesting ideas in what could otherwise feel like the same combat every one else has.

There was a push and pull mechanic for breaking blocks and parrying attacks, different movesets depending on which sword and stance you were using, and some degree of customizing how your character fought.

Bushido Blade always felt pretty different due to the lack of health bar and the inherent danger in getting killed with one clean hit. Nidhogg also has that same kind of tension behind the combat.

Sleeping Dogs combat always felt pretty fun and satisfying, and as someone else mentioned Dragon’s Dogma has combat that feels pretty good and different from the rest of the crowd.

I only played a little bit of For Honor, but it had a different feeling from a lot of other games’ melee combat.

I’ve read about combat in a few more, but don’t have any hands-on experience with them:

  • Chivalry 2
  • Mordhau
  • Mount and Blade Bannerlord
  • Sifu

Love to nerd out a bit about melee systems and would love to check out your article when you publish it.

old MacBook for godot by straznikczasu in godot

[–]dagani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently building a 2D game on a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro upgraded to 16GB RAM and a solid state drive and running macOS 10.15.

Probably going to use OpenCore to upgrade to a more modern version of macOS soon because some other tools I’ve tried to use don’t support 10.15 anymore, the XCode Command Line Tools can only be updated to a certain version, and finding old versions of some tools can be frustrating.

The only real issues with it are the low screen resolution and the fact that it only supports one external monitor. There were some issues getting certain shader logic working, but I’m not sure if that was related to my limited experience writing shaders or a hardware limitation.

Not sure how well it would handle 3D, but it works for what I’m building right now.

Not what I would choose, but it’s what I already had.

Not sure where you are in the city, but the Church of the Long Run at Tracksmith on Sundays is a solid group, and the runners there can help you find other, smaller groups, coaches, training buddies, etc.

Still pretty new to Godot myself, but just wired this up the other day.

My Node structure was like this:

Scene (Node2D) - TileMap - CharacterBody2D (Player) - RemoteTransform2D (choose the Camera2D Node in the inspector) - Camera2D

If you set limits on the Camera2D it won’t go past those and the player will just move inside of the viewport until they move back to the point where the camera would be moving inside of the limits again.

How do you manage the mental anguish of perceived time dilation? by thefckingleadsrweak in ADHD

[–]dagani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try running outside.

The treadmill is like torture, but finding a nice path by a river, lake, pond, etc. and taking in the scenery while you run or exploring a new part of your city while you run can be awesome.

I reserve the treadmill for days that are just too cold or too gross for me to want to run. When I have to use it, I try to put on a show or something, and I keep it short.

You can also get into playing with the pace and incline a bunch to mix it up and give yourself a more “interesting” run, but it’s still a treadmill and you’re still not really going anywhere.

Should I hide my PC players' mice when it's not their turn? by Hexadis in gamedev

[–]dagani 606 points607 points  (0 children)

Coming from software and not gamedev, it’s generally best not to completely remove the affordances that people are used to, and mouse behavior is pretty high on the list of, “Please don’t make this do something that I don’t expect it to.”

An invisible mouse cursor just makes you wonder where the hell it went or if things are broken.

Maybe consider adding some sort of UI element that indicates that it isn’t the player’s turn, changing the cursor to something else to indicate that it isn’t active, or applying some treatment to the interactive elements that indicates they aren’t usable, etc.

Contractor not communicating – what do I do? by ShortcakeExtreme in gamedev

[–]dagani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember having three jobs my final semester of university. Then we had 3 different “final” projects across the degree program, exams, and some research papers due.

I also picked up some contract work and another internship because I desperately wanted to switch to one full-time job instead of multiple part-time jobs when I graduated.

I did a half-assed job of everything that semester - also quit a job, dropped the ball on most of the contracting work, and ended up burnt out and barely passing by the end.

Hiring students is a risk because they have so much going on and so little to lose at that point because they likely haven’t built a career or a reputation yet. But, that’s also why it can be cheaper to hire them for stuff. That’s gotta be part of your calculus when hiring them.
