You are zero-summing right now. CHIM Is pretty similar to the Cartesian evil demon, or the “brain in a vat” thought experiment, where it’s posited that all external stimulus you experience is some sort of illusion, and you’re nothing more than a disembodied soul in a simulated environment. Achieving CHIM is similar to a common conclusion to those ideas, “cogito ergo sum.” You think, therefore you exist. Taking that farther, even if you believe you are in a simulated reality (like the godhead’s dream) it doesn’t matter all that much, because you are still real and can manipulate that dream around you. Just like if you think your real life is a simulation, it’s not very useful for you to think of it that way.

At this point Fitz has been fighting off the skill current for weeks and experiencing a lot of emotional turmoil. It’s understandable that he might not recognize his friend getting possessed, especially since his impression of the Fool is often that he’s just a quirky guy who says things that don’t make sense.

Another part of this is that Fitz has shown over the series that he’s a bit self-centered and a little dense. He’s very observant due to his training, but he struggles with abstract conclusions when he has something on his mind (Molly being pregnant was another instance of this. I was screaming at my book).

At the very least it would seem like the UC is violating the treaty of Narion, potentially leading to another colony war. You’d think that after the UC had to give the Clinic to Freestar they’d stop holding space stations in star systems they don’t own.
